Publisher's Summary

A deeply honest investigation of what it means to be a woman and a commodity from Emily Ratajkowski, the archetypal, multi-hyphenate celebrity of our time.

Emily Ratajkowski is an acclaimed model and actress, an engaged political progressive, a formidable entrepreneur, a global social media phenomenon and, now, a writer. Rocketing to world fame at age 21, Ratajkowski sparked both praise and furor with the provocative display of her body as an unapologetic statement of feminist empowerment. The subsequent evolution in her thinking about our culture's commodification of women is the subject of this audiobook.

My Body is a profoundly personal exploration of feminism, sexuality and power, of men's treatment of women and women's rationalizations for accepting that treatment. These essays chronicle moments from Ratajkowski's life while investigating the culture's fetishization of girls and female beauty, its obsession with and contempt for women's sexuality, the perverse dynamics of the fashion and film industries and the grey area between consent and abuse.

Nuanced, unflinching and incisive, My Body marks the debut of a fierce writer brimming with courage and intelligence.

Interesting Angle for a Celebrity Memoire

I watched Emily over a few days of heavy promotion on the late night TV show circuit and Fashion channels, and also read an excerpt on The Guardian before I ordered this on here. I find the themes quite relevant for me as a woman and also saw this an interesting way of writing a memoire for a celebrity. The publishers and Emily smartly combined relevant gender issues/politics, the exposé and celebrity memoire to capture the zeitgeist. Indeed, it is already a best seller.

There are some juicy details regarding famous models and billionaires. However, I like that it 'appears' to be so honest, which makes Emily's story resonant with so many women including myself. It made me feel not alone and that life is complex and not like what the media or marketing or your parents like you to believe how binary life is.

I must note that Emily's reading or performance is sometimes not easy to listen to because she mumbles and can be monotone. Perhaps it is better to read it as a book.

It is not bad. An extremely pleasant read!

It is a tough book to write a review for. If nothing else, it is compelling. There is no particular insight about anything, but it was definitely personal and painted a semi-coherent picture about the life of an uber-hottie. It gives a glimpse into a small section of a world I do not and cannot know.

There are a lot of interesting gaps and incongruences. The more "poetic" statements in the book are pretty laughable, and many points and conclusions are pretty vapid. But! If I were to publish my diaries, it would be similar.

Over all, this would have taken a lot of courage to write and publish, and Emily should be applauded for the having done it. The narration was fantastic, great cadence, tone, and annunciation.

It is a good read, not 5 stars though. I think it probably had to be that way. The way it constantly jumps around and half tells stories works really well for the subject matter.

hits home

I loved Emily's narration. I'm not a model but I felt this book hit close to home. It talks about experiences many women go through in regards to their body/appearance as a measure of worth and the messages that get engraved in us early on in life by family, popular media and culture.

It also builds up well to how these beliefs are unhelpful and toxic both for women and men and how they set the precedent for sexual abuse against women.

It was a book that brought up emotions and highlights the importance of feminism in a pragmatic way that cannot be ignored or discredited. Thank you Emily for writing this and opening up about your struggles and internal conflicts.

Real, Raw

It’s easy to dismiss Ratajkowski as a “sex symbol”
but this work places her in the centre of understand sexuality and femininity, the make gaze, complexities of body commodification and much more. Well done to her!

You are me, thank you sister ✨✨

Finished this book in one day. I saw my self and my life experiences reflected so precisely in many words here. You embody the feminism I always longed for, the permission slip to be sexy and bold and take back my power. To not apologise. To celebrate my beauty even if women hated me for it and men felt predatory. That it is my divine birthright to enjoy myself in this way. My inner 13 year old and current 28 year old needed this. Thank you for this medicine.

Story of meaning read without any

Interesting female perspective of a position most can never imagine being in but many will mirror experiences of.

Brilliant

Fantastic read and very powerful book to read as a woman and should be read by all. Emily is insightful about what her body and she have endured in her experiences and speaks eloquently. Emotional and matter of fact and read so well by the author herself.

Extraordinary.

This book is an extremely visceral, incredibly moving & highly significant achievement that I believe that every single human being deserves to read as it is a powerfully written exploration into what it means to occupy a physical envelope of a body that I genuinely believe will become a classic in the future as it deeply vulnerable.

Bloody brilliant

Such a great read! I couldn't put it down and when I had to, I was rushing to pick it back up again. This book challenges societies perception of women and their value in such a powerful way. The way it was told really draws out the undercurrent of everyday micro aggressions and will unfreeze even the hardest of hearts. It left me in tears and reinforced just how much damage the patriarchy has done to us all, not just women, men too. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!

intense

I bought the book to get a head start on understanding what my young daughter may face growing up and discovering she's a women. It blew me away with the brutal unwavering honesty of the experiences and challenges women face. Demonstrating the mental fortitude they require to overcome the animalistic nature of weak men.

Great read

I found the premise of this book intriguing and noticed how great the reviews were. Emily's writing did not disappoint. Her heartbreaking, honest retrospective view on the modelling industry is stark and at times brutal. She does not shy away from the criticisms of her career either and addressing the dichotomy that is her lifestyle.

Pleasantly surprised

Emily’s writing is deliciously poetic. Her essays are carefully worded and evocative, drawing the reader in with little effort. It was a pleasure to listen to Emily’s voice which was, albeit slightly monotone, a true representation of the woman’s character and perception of herself, and it had a calming effect on me. On the singular occasion that she allows emotion to enter her voice, you can tell she is holding back tears, and this moment for me transformed Emily from a two dimensional stereotype into someone with real, heart wrenching life experiences and trauma, who deserves to be heard. And while I cannot relate personally to most of what she describes her life to be, I am - like her - a woman and mother. I believe most women could take something away from this work. Thank you Emily.

I absolutely loved this. Considering Emily is the same age as me I felt so many similarities to her.
Especially a lot of situations myself or women have been in.
I loved the way she wrote and the descriptive words she used.

Shocking no one

I have some mixed feelings regarding this book, while I understand how hard it must be for Emily however, the industry that is all about people's body and sexuality. Trying to make an industry built on objectication of women's bodies - it seems rather naive to think that modelling anything other than sexist.

Performance and read well by Emily, if this modelling thing does work she definitely go into voice work lol

Insightful

I’ve never heard someone so accurately voice these kinds of issues. She’s not afraid to say things that I’m sure most people would like to pretend they weren’t thinking.
I found it really intriguing and insightful. It did make me feel a bit pessimistic about the world for a few days, but I’m glad I read it.

Real and Vulnerable

This is Emily’s story. I can’t imagine how hard it would have been to be this honest and open. She is real about her inner thoughts and attitudes. I think most woman will be able to relate to parts of her story.
