It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. Publisher's Summary
One of Britain's most beloved authors, Mary Stewart leads her listeners on a journey of murder and deceit through the dusty roads of mid-century Greece in this tale that fans of Agatha Christie and Barbara Pym are sure to love.
'Nothing ever happens to me...'
So begins Camilla Haven's letter home during her quiet holiday in Athens. But when a stranger begs her to drive a car to Delphi, swearing that it is a matter of life and death, Camilla impulsively takes the opportunity she's been offered. Before long she is caught up in a whirlwind of intrigue, deceit and murder as she spins along the dusty Greek roads in a race against time to solve a 14-year-old mystery.
'The longer I waited the less possible it seemed to walk out of the café and leave everything to settle itself without me, and the more insidiously did the other possibility begin to present itself. Dry-mouthed, I pushed it aside, but there it was, a challenge, a gift, a dare from the gods....'
Critic Reviews

Mary Stewart deserves better narrators...
Having read and immersed myself in the atmosphere of Mary Stewart novels so many times as to have virtually memorized most of the text, it has been a disappointment to listen to the Audible presentations of some of the best stories ever written. Why an author of her stature and obvious popularity has been inflicted with such inferior narrators is incomprehensible. Fraudulent accents, uneducated (and unprofessional) mispronunciations of words, apparently unresearched and awkward interprepretations of characters...It has been a disconcerting, uncomfortable, and often grueling experience to listen to these audiobooks. I cannot even finish this one.
I love Lisette Lecat’s interpretation and narration of Alexander McCall Smith’s No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. Jane Entwistle’s Flavia de Luce (Alan Bradley) is fabulous. If Jane Austen were not a favorite author (she is) I could listen just for the joy in the performance to Juliet Stevenson.
Audible, your selection of narrators for Mary Stewart tales is an insult to the quality of the writing.

Best narrator ever
Mary Stewart is one of my favorite authors, and My Brother Michael is one of her best. Jasmine Blackborow is a perfect narrator, with great enunciation, steady volume, and narrative flow, with enough differences in characters’ voices to identify them without going overboard as some narrators do. She made the story come alive.

Another wonderful Mary Stewart audiobook
I absolutely adore Mary Stewart's sensibility, and have loved every Stewart audiobook that I have listened to. I have not read any of her novels; I first encountered her at Audible. Her heroines are easy to identify with: brave but a bit insecure, well-meaning but a bit naïve, thrust into unfamiliar (and often perilous) circumstances which, after a struggle, the character successfully surmounts.
Stewart's descriptions of landscapes and nature are always entrancing. In this novel, set in the early 1960s, the protagonist visits Lebanon and Syria, beautifully invoked. Romance helps to energize the story, adding to the atmosphere, but the plot depends on the actions- and agency- of the protagonist. There are elements of suspense, and of mystery, nicely handled. There are reflections on the ancient history of the area, as well as the conditions of the 1960s. Stewart's lush prose is enriched by suitable bits of poetry. The spoken narration is very well done. Overall, The Gabriel Hounds provides a lovely listening experience.

A tale masterfully spun
This is my absolute favourite book from the author. I‘have been reading it again and again over many years - the covers tell the tale - and never get tired of it. And although I know the plot, it is every time like the first. I am there wit Camilla and Simon, the silent bystander to the plot unfolding before me.

Wish narration had been better
I first read this book over 40 years ago and was so excited to see it offered on Audible. I wish a better narrator had been chosen. She does not do justice to the flow or beauty of the story and is simply a mediocre reader.
The book was a 5* story but the narration brought it down to a 3*. A shame because the plot and location offers the reader so much.

Excellent, I really did save the best till last...
Christmas came early in August for Mary Stewart aficionados this year, with the release of four unabridged novels at once. Apart from the very real disappointment of The Ivy Tree, it's been a great month, and this really is 'saving the best till last'
Another reviewer has said the narration disappointed as it sounded as if Camilla and Simon were pensioners. I can (sort of) understand where they are coming from, but don't think I agree. This book is 60 years old this year, and the action takes place in a Greece where the memories of the Second World War are still very fresh, and very raw. Watch any film of that time and you realise that voices have changed a lot in the intervening 60 years.
Simon, a man who wears grey flannels (bet he calls them 'bags'), and teaches Classics to 'his house' in a minor public school, is not your modern 21st Century man. On the other hand, he is one of Stewart's not overtly romantic but essentially kind, practical and tough heroes that are really rather nice - the type of man you would always want at your side when in trouble. For me, his voice sounds about right, as does Camilla's, another of-her-time young woman who smokes whenever she has the chance and has a major crisis of confidence in her life at the outset of the book.
I'd not heard Jasmine Blackborow before and think she handles the cast of characters really well, with a special mention of Stephanos, and the narration of both the early scene where he describes Michael's death to Simon, and the later rather Homeric finale in the quarry.
This is an excellent book, bringing Delphi - or the Delphi of 60 years ago anyway - to life with mystery, some sadness and some real beauty, particularly in the bright citadel. And it's well read. What more could we ask?
And there's four more to come in November to complete the set...
Thanks Audible (oh, and if you can see your way to re-recording The Ivy Tree I'd be eternally grateful...) Pretty please?

Dramatic thriller set in Crete
I first read Mary Stewart’s books when I was a teenager in the 1970’s and I still have the paperbacks, even if they are very fragile!
I was so pleased to discover the audiobooks and am slowly buying them all.
What I would say regarding the clipped vocals is that it really was how many people spoke in those days. This book was written in 1960’s and is a reflection of the times.
I really enjoyed the audio version and felt it really took you into the book and made it come to life.
I did have to look up some of the mythological names and stories as it’s a long time since I studied them in junior school!
Mary Stewart’s book gave me a love of Greece that has stayed with me, and we went there for our honeymoon. We didn’t return to Greece until 2014 and have been going every year since.

Degree in Classics required
I could not finish this story. Usually I am a great admirer of Mary Stewart and her works but to understand this one I would need a degree in Classics and a library of Greek myths and legends. It's such a shame as I had been saving this Audible as a treat but although I do have a small knowledge of the tales of Ancient Greece I just couldn't relax and enjoy this particular offering.

Spoilt by mispronunciations
I don't blame the narrator - she read well. It was the job of whoever commissioned her to check the correct pronunciation of Greek words and to make sure that she used them. Practically every Greek word apart from the obvious - Delphi and Athens - were mispronounced with the stress falling in the wrong place. I found it very distracting, especially when spoken by Simon who is supposed to be a Classical scholar and speaker of modern Greek but apparently couldn't even pronounce Arachova correctly. Shame.

I know the book well, so no surprises there. But the narrator manages to make the two main characters sound like OAPs rather than the late twenties/early 30s they’re supposed to be. It’s really off-putting.

Awful Resolution.
I couldn't listen to the last two or three chapters.
I find the last 20% horrid. Fast forward to the last 2 minutes.

A lovely read as I remember
My only critic is that a bit too much poetry esq dramatically read. I read these books many many years ago and when I went to Delphi also many years ago I remembered the area just as is written. Wonderful

Mary Stewart.
A very good story. Jasmine Blackborow reads well. The story kept me listening but the modern accents don't seem to match with Mary Stewart's books.
