Life for Victoria Lacey should be perfect. And it is - perfectly boring. Agree to marry a lord who has yet to inspire a single, solitary tingle? Why, of course. Smile as though this is not the thousandth time he's mentioned hounds and hunting? It's all in a day's work for the oh-so-proper sister of the Duke of Blackmore. Surely no one would suspect her secret longing for heart-racing, head-spinning passion. Except, perhaps, a dark stranger...on a terrace...at a ball where she should definitely not be kissing a man she has only just met.

With a ruined face like his, it's hard to like much about the world - especially smart-mouthed harpies (with lips better suited to kissing than speaking) who brave his castle with indecent proposals. Publisher's Summary
Miss Katherine Danvers has always been a wallflower. But now with her family on the brink of financial ruin, she finds herself a desperate wallflower. To save her family, she'll do anything. Luckily, she has the perfect plan....

No one has heard from the duke in years. Surely he'll never find out before her sisters' weddings and she can go back to her own quiet life.
Soon, though, everything is out of control. At first, it's just a few new ball gowns on the duke's accounts. Then it's interviews with reporters eager for gossip. Before she knows it, Katherine has transformed herself into Kitty Danvers, charming and clever belle of the ton - with everyone eager to meet her thankfully absent fiance.

Horrible Narration
The story would have been ok if it had not been for the narrator. The narrator had a very breathy voice, she paused too often and in inappropriate places, and pronounced words like she was trying a fancy British accent, but she just sounded ridiculous. I had to stop listening because it was way too annoying. If you can ignore the narrator, I’d recommend the story.

OMG!
I was trying to give the narrator's performance a chance. I listened to the sample. That must of been her best , bc I couldn't get past chapter 1. She and the author Stacy Reid are first. I might listen to another of the authors books but never of Mary Sarah's! I don't normally give bad ratings but I should of taken a hint from other reviews.
No! I it's not worth a credit. 😨😭

Hm
I really liked this premise, and I enjoyed the first third or so. The characters were set up well, and I really enjoyed their introduction to each other. It was such an interesting dynamic to navigate, and I liked the tension the author brought. However, it really fell apart for me in the last third. The Duke in question is disabled and presumed impotent, and I grew increasingly uncomfortable with how that was handled, especially wrt the HEA. There's a lot of "if he just tries hard enough, he'll get past it", which, to be fair, is how it works within the narrative. But given that this is the kind of rhetoric used to dismiss the real limitation of people who have chronic disabilities, it took away from the story for me.
It made it feel like the only route for them to be happy was if the Duke continued to push himself and magically overcame his paralysis to walk again, which was echoed in how his impotence was handled. This could've been a great opportunity to show that a HEA doesn't have to require genetic children or penetrative intercourse, because that's absolutely achievable, but instead it left me feeling very displaced.

Cute plot, weird narration
I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing this book. while the story and plot were cute although slow in some places, the narration ruined this recording. Mary Sarah placed inflections in odd places on words and in sentences. She pauses in the middle of a sentences which makes for a very weird listening experience. If you can get past the narration, the story is good. recommend the story not the narrator.

AWFUL NARRATION test of endurance
Because someone can mean does not mean that they should, diabolical!
It it actually sounds like artificial intelligence robot voice, overly breathy and little intonation in keeping with the sentence. Dialogue between characters was abysmal, played around with the speed to make sure I could get the best out of it but didn get past the first chapter. I'm sure I have listened to this narrator before without it being so bad. (edit - I have and that's the only book out of the hundreds I have that I have had a refund on! Had!)
need a refund.
I couldn't rate the story as couldn't endure the narrator that far, however the author should have some say over its performance if this is how she perceived it I cannot think I would be a ble to endure other books.

A lovely story reined
If you can manage to plow through the dreadful narration you'll find a lovely romance.
I could sort 9f handle the breathiness but not saying simple words properly us just unforgettable.
Mary Sarah would repeated say barck (back), larp (lap) and others the same.
I will never but a another book narrated by her.

Nice story, narrator can't speak English
Like this story which is beauty and the beast meets Jane eyre (fire scarred beast saved by the love of beauty). Stacy Reid writes well and characterisation is usually sure footed. As an English person I have to say the narration drove me nuts. The vowel a is pronounced ah throughout. Thus, perhaps becomes perhahps, Katherine Kahtherine, etc. The worst offender was back (pronounced bahck throughout). Given that bahck can be understood as bark this led to some quite funny lines. The preponderance of the a vowel in english meant I couldn't escape ah-dom. Ruined an otherwise enjoyable tale. We really don't speak like this, not even in the world of Oxford English and received pronunciation. I'm going to stick to the book and leave ah-dom for the birds 😂

Gosh where to start on the narrator. Accents that dip in and out, inconsistent voices and mispronunciations and over pronunciations that really grate. She sounds like an inconsistent Moira Rose from Schitts Creek but not in a fun way.

Great story spoiled by narration
Loved the story and characters, however really struggled with the narration, particularly in the first hour or so when the whispering nature of the narrative made it extremely difficult to hear certain words. I did eventually get used to it but found myself having to rewind often just to glean what had been said. Unfortunately, I am likely to avoid other books in the series and any others by the same narrator.
