Publisher's Summary

A #1 Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestseller.

A bittersweet short story about mothers, daughters, and the witches’ brew of love—and control—that binds them, by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments.

Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed. But as the daughter of this bewitching homemaker comes of age and her mother’s claims become more and more outlandish, she begins to question everything she once took for granted.

Critic Reviews

“Narrator Hillary Huber is enchanting in the role of a daughter who is spilling her mother's dark secrets.… Huber's vulnerable confessional tone for the daughter contrasts nicely with the ringing cultured voice of her mother. Huber deftly handles the sardonic humor and emotional depth of Atwood's writing.… Both Huber and Atwood are at the top of their form with a bewitching fable that will take up residence in the listener's mind.”AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner

“There’s a perfect balance of silliness and poignancy in My Evil Mother, which is really a story about the fantasies we never give up about our mothers…What loving mother wouldn’t cast a spell of protection around her children if she could?”—Ron Charles, Washington Post

Real-Life Magic

Interesting short listen about a "witch-mother" and daughter, and their travails in everyday life. What seems like magic is really just life in all its mystery, vagaries and experiences. Very well done and worth the listen.

Short and easy listen.

Very short, sweet narrative on being a Mom and dealing with daughters. I liked it. I don't love it, but I like it enough to think it adds value to a listener.

Entertaining story

If you were ever a 15 year old girl, you undoubtedly banged heads with your mother and even thought her crazy at times!
This short story took me back in my own mind and made me sad for the times I was mean to my own mother. If only I could have her back for just 10 minutes to apologize for having been such a spoiled brat and to tell her she was the most amazing mother I could have wished for!

Fun until the Fbombs and Sexual Comments

This was a fine story until the last 10-12 minutes when the language tanked.

What an amazing writer

Wow, she could write about anything and make it deep meaningful and entertaining. It probably helps that I’ve raised several daughters. Sometimes crazy isn’t as crazy as you thought. Give it a read.

Interesting

I wish it was narrated by people who are actually attached to this type of original works. Interesting story, nonetheless.

Great Title

I had to read this because of its title. Like all of Atwood’s work—whether a poem, a novel, a screenplay—she weaves a little bit of everything into its emotional core. I can see how this story is viewed (and told) from a multi-generational perspective. It is funny and sentimental but crispy around the edges.

Evil? It’s in the eye of the beholder

Margaret Atwood he’s written a short story that’s a delight to hear and read. Brought up by her mother, a witch?, Who guides her through life with her subtle steering. I was mesmerized from the beginning and found a love story where I didn’t expect there to be one. A quick experience one should not miss.

Haunting Mother-Daughter Story

I loved the story but the narration sounded so robotic at times that it ruined the experience of a spooky feminist tale of mother-daughter relationship dynamics.

Great narrating

The narrator was brilliant but the story didn’t really go anywhere. I downloaded this going off the reviews but it was jumpy and didn’t really have much of a story to it, then abruptly seemed to come to an end.

This is a lovely short story exemplifying the challenges of parenthood. Truly enjoyable, it does leave you wondering, could it be true?

Yawwwwwwwwn…

Was this read by an AI robot impersonating a frog at the same time? Even at just under an hour this deadpan croak is insufferable. The story itself is dull. The idea and themes are interesting but too thinly explored here to hold interest.

Beautifully written

A great entry point into Atwood's works. There's a reason she is considered to be one of the best. Although short, I listened to this book in two sittings as I always like to stop and think when reading Atwood.
