Publisher's Summary
Jack would rather be at sea than fixing the mistakes of his grandfather, the late Earl of Stansworth. Instead, he finds that inheriting his grandfather's wealth and title and securing the welfare of his sister and mother means joining the ranks of high society and living with the aristocracy. Luckily, Ivy Carslisle, the granddaughter of a dear friend of Jack's late grandmother, is willing to teach him etiquette and properly introduce him into society. Jack soon learns that his challenge isn't surviving his new lifestyle, but surviving the conspiracies against him as well as keeping himself from falling madly in love with his new tutor.

Nice surprise!
This was my first time listening to a Proper Romance book, but it won't be the last! I like that there are clean romance books out there. The author did a good job in making a quick, enjoyable story that doesn't drag, and with the right amount of twists and turns to keep the plot interesting.
My only complaint would be that while the narrator has a great voice, she spoke a tad too quickly for my taste. It made the story seem a bit rushed. Overall, though, it was a great listen!

Nice gender reversal of "My Fair Lady", but...
It was an interesting concept, but I did not like the execution. The characters were not interesting enough and this story completely relies on the characters, so the end result didn't work for me. There are interesting positive projects mentioned, but only as tokens to show that the characters are charitable - we are never shown those projects in progress, and I would have been much more interested in them than in the stupid attempted murders.
Other that that, the book is inoffensive - just mindless fluff without much substance to it.

Couldn't finish
Forced myself to keep going with this book but had to abandon ship less than halfway through. It's just so badly written. The author is utterly ignorant of Regency manners, decorum, and propriety. Which is unfathomable considering the whole point of the book is for the hero to be taught just exactly those things by the heroine (and I suppose they fall in love somewhere along the way). So why not do the research? Apparently, the best choice of social tutor for a young man with the manners of a common sailor (since that is exactly what he is) is a VERY YOUNG, BEAUTIFUL, UNRELATED, UNMARRIED young lady who is NOT EVEN OUT herself. She is not yet Out in Society, but that somehow qualifies her to teach someone else all about it. Down to scandalously arranging his cravat for him! More like she needs this tutoring more than anyone, judging by her own ignorance. She basically breaks the rules of society/propriety with their every meeting, and proves herself either ignorant or defiant of the social order of the day. She also painfully proves the author's lack of knowledge in every chapter. Women did not attend funerals, what was she doing at the grave site? There is no dessert course at mealtime, both sweet and savoury dishes were served in every course. Numerous mistakes of the kind show you that the author is clueless when it comes to the Regency way of life, which is paramount not background to this book, but hey whatever serves the plot. (What plot? Did I blink and miss it?) I absolutely had to ditch this book when the supposedly super-ladylike heroine acts and speaks even worse than a common sailor, more like a common whore, to a lady at a social gathering using such language and childish insults ("Your husband is hideous!") betraying the heroine's utter lack of manners. There is no bearing the un-Regency nature of this book, it is beyond endurance and the writing past belief. I shudder to think what other monstrosities lie in the rest of the book, and am heartily glad I did not stick around to find out. You cannot call a book My Fair Gentleman when the person trying to make the man into a semblance of a gentleman breaches respectability, propriety, and even basic manners and common courtesy, in almost all her interactions. Ridiculous.

A sweet story
I did enjoy reading this story however found it a little hard to get through. The hero took a while to like, he was very gruff to start with but soon softened and became rather likeable. The story was rather predictable and towards the middle I did become a little bored but I persevered and did finish it and was glad I did.

This is the 4th book by Nancy Campbell Allen that I have listened to. I plan to listen to every other one she has written. I find myself rationing my listening so that they don't get over too soon because I don't want them to end. Engaging, emotional, a little bit of angst (but not too much), exactly what I enjoy in a work of fiction. Loved it!

Highly entertaining
Well constructed and hugely entertaining story although there were glaring historical etiquette errors. The heroine was rarely accompanied by a maid or a relative as a chaperone (which she should have) when out of doors and especially when visiting Jack a single male.
Even with the grandmothers of the hero and heroine being friends it would have been unlikely that Ivy as a young single gentlewoman would be an appropriate tutor for Jack.
However all the characters were engaging and entertaining as described. A little more about the disinherited cousin’s feelings and emotions from that character perspective rather than just having others tell it would have rounded it out a bit.
The bow street runners should have been called out when it became evident there was a plot.
Despite that the story drew me in as Saskia Maarleveld always brings life to an audio story and the writing really lent itself to the audio format. I listened more or less in one sitting and would recommend this author with this narrator to anyone who enjoys sharp dialogue.
