Publisher's Summary

A spicy murder mystery from Tessa Bailey, New York Times bestselling author of It Happened One Summer . . .

It was supposed to be a relaxing vacation in sweet, sunny Cape Cod—just me and my beloved brother—but discovering a corpse in our rental house really throws a wrench into our tanning schedule. Now a rude, crude bounty hunter has arrived on the back of his motorcycle to catch the killer and refuses to believe I can be helpful, despite countless hours of true crime podcast listening. Not to mention a fulfilling teaching career of wrangling second graders.

A brash bounty hunter and an energetic elementary schoolteacher: the murder-solving team no one asked for, but thanks to these pesky attempts on my life, we're stuck together, come hell or high tide.

I'm just here to do a job, not babysit an amateur sleuth. Although...it is becoming less and less of a hardship to have her around. Sure, she's stubborn, distracting and can't stay out of harm's way. She's also brave and beautiful and reminds me of the home I left behind three years ago. In other words, the insatiable hunger and protectiveness she is waking up in me is a threat to my peace of mind. Before I sink any deeper into this dangerous attraction, I need to solve this murder and get back on the road.

But will fate take her from me before I realize the road has been leading to her all along?

The Narrators Ruined The Story

OMG, I never write reviews but these narrators . . . . The female narrator was eh. If it was just her I probably could have handled it but the male narrator was awful. Think of your granddad reading this to you trying to portray the male character but he comes off more like a detective from a 1950's criminal mystery that wears a trench coat and fedora. Don't waste a credit on this, just buy the book on kindle. I'm still grossed out thinking about a granddad reading the spicy scenes to me.

good story, terrible voice actor casting

I was really looking forward to this book. It was highly recommend by a friend who read the actual tangible book so I pre-ordered it on audible. as soon as it came out yesterday I started it and I adore the plot but the casting for the male voice actor is awful! I love Willem Dafoe, he is a great actor but I would say that his voice is the exact opposite of sexy. I actually had to look to see if it was actually Willem Dafoe reading the male parts. it isn't, but the voice actor could be used as an ADR replacement for Dafoe's voice. It is so off-putting and unsexy that I actually found myself fast forwarding the spicey parts of the story to just get back to the plot. just imagining Dafoe in his mid-sixties, lusting after a sweet girl in her twenties made me grimace.
I really wonder who is in charge of casting voice actors for books because Tessa Bailey has another book about window shopping at Christmas time and the male actor in that sounds like Lindsay Graham--maybe that is actually the exact opposite of sexy cuz I couldn't even listen to the whole book.

What in the actual F ?! Bar none worst male narrator

Did we hire Grandpa bob ?! Possibly the Sams club discount on a “seductive voice” .
Nothing sounds hotter then grandad talking about licking nips and stuff 🤢 Woof it was AWFUL.
I won’t even mention how you can hear him swallowing/ dry mouth lip smacking during his narration.

Tessa Bailey you’re wonderful - but whomever does your leg work should be FIRED .

The story was bomb, up the speed and the grandpa Bob voice was tolerable enough to finish .

Wrong choice of male narrator

His voice is absolutely the wrong choice for the detective. I couldn’t even finish the first intimate scene. The visual I had of a 60+ year old man with long gray hair and a cigarette hanging from his lips. Tessa Bailey is an amazing writer. Sadly, this book was ruined by the narration.

Story was good buuuut

The narrators left a lot to be desired. The female narrator has extremely flat delivery and the male narrator is far too old sounding for his character. Both were rather off-putting for different reasons.

The story itself was good. Not as good as some of her others but I would say 3.5-4 out of 5 for story. I may revise the score once I have a physical read-through.

Nope

I was so excited to listen to this when it was released that I didn't read the reviews first..... the male narrator is awful. Usually I can push through it but I seriously cant. I'm sure it's a good story but if I finish this, it will be by reading on my kindle.

Great story…horrible narration

So I’m a huge Tessa Bailey fan. As in, I’ve read every single one of her books and loved them. But I’m getting started on her audiobooks and I was very excited for this story to be narrated because I loved the story. But I just can’t get over how horrible this narration is! The male narrator is just bad. I cannot get over the weird and awkward pauses. I’m stopping now

Ummm,... I LOVE this story,... but the narrator...

I absolutely LOVED this story, but the male narrator doesn't fit what I envisioned the MMC to sound like at all,... supposed to be a motorcycle riding bountyhunter right??? ,... this narrator sounds like he would fit more of an inspector gadget book or a cool grandfather part in a book or series. Almost like Joe Pesci without the accent, or David Caruso from CSI Miami- lol- Anyway, good narrator for sure, just not who i thought i would hear for this part. Definitely pulled me from the story because i would intermittently be picturing a 60 year old in the book when the spicy scenes would hit and I'd have to skim or take a second to think about what they're supposed to look like lol, so yeah, there's that, but the FMC was perfect IMO and I adored everything else about this book. Maybe they'll recast some day, or maybe not. PLEASE let us know if this is ever recasted though, I would 100% buy it again just to listen to a more fitting narrator for the part because I love this book that much!

Spicy and Thrilling

Didn’t care for the male voice. He sounded over 50 years old. Would of been sexier if he sounded younger.

Terrible narration

Oh my god I can’t even get through this one. The male narrator is so bad, it completely threw me off. I made an attempt to power through but the first sex scene that he read I was horrified. I don’t even know if it was a good scene. Another reviewer mentioned that he sounded like Willem Defoe and I can’t not picture him as a 60+ year old Willem Defoe talking about sexy panties. Horrifying, just get the text version.

Lukewarm romance mystery

I listened to ‘it happened one summer’ and thought I would enjoy this too as a light romance mystery. I found it too slow paced particularly when Miles was talking - he seems to suck the fun out of the scenes. I think combining romance and mystery means that neither is is done well. I finished the book, but I wouldn’t recommend it I found the romance and mystery too predictable to truly enjoy it. The narration was good though.

really enjoyed it

audiobook was really really good, and if you like a romance (quite steamy but cute) with a dash of murder mystery... this is it.

This narrator should be banned from spice

His voice was horrible - super unsexy and gravelly in an old man villain way not a hot bounty hunter way.

I always prefer the audiobook to the physical book but I returned this audiobook at 50% and bought the paperback. Honestly a real shame job for whoever was in charge of the talent for this one - they have done a disservice to Tessa, the publisher and honestly, also this narrator who I am sure may have thrived in a different type of book. This was bad bad casting.

The male narrator sounds like an elderly man

Please before you purchase know that the male narrator sounds like elderly man and not attractive/sexy at all, I couldn’t finish even his first chapter he started reading.
So just warning to future people buying.

Good but not great

Story was good but the voice acting could have been better. It was hard to tell the difference between characters as the female wasn't great at changing her voice. I personally didn't feel like it was the right choice of male voice, he sounded less bad boy and more creeper.

Story let down

In my opinion, the male narrator doesn't have a voice for erotica. Would call this erotica more than romance. It's like every second scene. 5/10
