Publisher's Summary

Never judge a book by its cover. One of the world’s most common clichés.

Though sage advice, the age-old aphorism is rarely followed. Take Tori McNabb and Ashton Spencer for instance, who, based on appearances, believe they have no reason to breathe the same air. But when startling circumstances align their paths on the campus of Blakewood State University, the two have no choice but to look beyond their exteriors.

McNabb is a fighter in life as well as in the ring. She knows what she’s capable of...and she doesn’t want to be tested. Her only goal is to never return to Millville, New Jersey; she just wants to fly under the radar on the BSU campus.

Spencer, the most popular athlete on campus, is well on his way to success as a professional athlete. He is confident that the stars are aligned in his favor. But being tested by the underdog is something he though he'd never fail at.

Join this unlikely pair on a journey inside the pages of their ugly covers.

This book contains some profanity and sexually explicit content. It is intended for mature listeners.

☺️

I have read this series at least 3 times. I didn’t think there would be anything that I hadn’t experienced, I was completely wrong. The voices of Wesleigh and Emmanuel bring out such an amazing view of Tori and Ashston.

Maven, Machiavellian McNabb! Sheesh!

What a multidimensional female protagonist! The plot is unfamiliar in many cases and refreshing. Great inclusion of black pride, history and brilliance. The narrators are golden. An awesome listen.

You got to be kidding me! 😒

The narrators great, the story and plot great 👌 but why in the heck would u end the story like that?😳 Even if u have part 2, 3, or even 4 next up please don't ever end a story like this 😡. I understand cliffhangers but this was just ridiculous

What was that ending?!

When I started this story I hated both narrators and I couldn't get into the story. Their voices were annoying, but I kept listening and around the 6th chapter their voices finally grew on me. I hated Spence after that library incident. I didn't like the condescending, arrogant, know-it-all attitude he had with Tori. That part really got under my skin and I didn't think I would like him after that but I was proven wrong. I loved Tori. I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for the second book. I have so many questions!!! Why did Tori dropout? What injury ended Spence's NFL dreams? What happened with Spence's ex? The ending of this book was garbage. How do you end a book like that?! I had to go back and listen to the book again because I missed a lot in the 1st 6 chapters. This is an overall great book. The reason for the 4 star rating is because I hated the ending. Ending a book in a middle of a conversation is never a good look. This is the first time I've heard of this author but she has gained a fan! I've already preordered the 2nd book.

Let’s Set the Mood Right Quick:

My Muted Love (Muted Hopelessness Book 1) by Love Belvin

Drink: A Bit of Bully

Music: The Bully by Sody

Audible: Wesleigh Siobhan, Emmanuel Ingram: Wesleigh truly brought Tori to life. She made you believe in the story. She got all the emotional cues of Tori. Her joy, anger, and sadness were felt with her words. Tori was such a complex character and Wesleigh didn’t struggle at all with bring that complexity to her voice. Wesleigh truly performed and didn’t come to play with Tori McNabb. Emmanuel was Ashton Spencer, period! For one of the sisters this was actually her first-time hearing Emmanuel Ingram and from that point forward he became a favorite of hers. Ashton had so many layers and Emmanuel understood everyone. He brought all the flavor to Ashton. We felt like we were watching him and not listening. He took his role serious and made Ashton a forever book bae lol. Their voices melded so well together. This was one of our favorite stories with these two. The audible is a must.

KaToria “Tori” McNabb: If, “wanting to be left alone,” was a human it would be Tori. She tried her hardest to stay invisible but somehow, she always became someone’s target.

Ashton Spencer: If, “black boy privilege,” was a human it would be Ashton. He was giving with his money and extremely harsh with his words. Ashton excelled on and off the field.

Aivery Cooper: If, “the black Regina George,” was a human it would be Aivery. She is the truest definition of a mean girl.

This story took us through so many emotions. We wanted to fight with Tori. We wanted to cry with Tori. We wanted to protect her. There were times when we were disappointed in Ashton but in the same breath, he made us proud. He struggled so hard with wearing so many mask that at times it felt like he would get lost in the mix. This was a perfect and addictive first part to The Muted Hopelessness series and we highly recommend it.

Slow burn; worth it.

Considering books I've read thus far, this book and writer takes a different but appreciated approach within the romance genre
