This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

Traditionally, Americans learned in school that the ancestors of the people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere at the time of Columbus' landing had crossed the Bering Strait 12,000 years ago; existed mainly in small nomadic bands; and lived so lightly on the land that the Americas were, for all practical purposes, still a vast wilderness. But as Charles C. Mann now makes clear, archaeologists and anthropologists have spent the last 30 years proving these and many other long-held assumptions wrong.

What does it mean when a fictional hero takes a journey? Shares a meal? Gets drenched in a sudden rain shower? Often, there is much more going on in a novel or poem than is readily visible on the surface - a symbol, maybe, that remains elusive, or an unexpected twist on a character - and there's that sneaking suspicion that the deeper meaning of a literary text keeps escaping you. In this practical and amusing guide to literature, Thomas C. Foster shows how easy and gratifying it is to unlock those hidden truths.

The poems of the Poetic Edda have waited a long time for a modern English translation that would do them justice. Here it is at last (Odin be praised!) and well worth the wait. These amazing texts from a 13th-century Icelandic manuscript are of huge historical, mythological, and literary importance, containing the lion's share of information that survives today about the gods and heroes of pre-Christian Scandinavians, their unique vision of the beginning and end of the world, etc.

Though the world came to know of the Norse and their legends through Roman interaction at about the time of Christ, most of what we came to know were handed-down from folk tales gathered by native writers like Snorri Sturluson (c. 1179 - 1241). This was from a time when the Norse had already been converted to Christianity.

This book contains a brief but unconventional look at the Titans and Olympian gods of Greek mythology. Brief, because a thorough treatment of these legendary super beings could take thousands of hours. Unconventional, because digging for truth is far more interesting than reciting old stories which have little relevance to us today. Attempting to reveal some semblance of truth brings the stories to life. It gives them relevance to our modern world. Here, we will look at many of the more fascinating stories.

Very useful
This is a very useful and informative reference guide introducing the history of Gods, Men, and the Mythologies of the World. Has a lot of details about the ancient cultures and stories. Without a doubt, there is a lot of information. In one series, the listeners go around the world to realize how different groups reasoned the creation, death, the misery or injustices of daily lives, the environment, other animals, and other vagaries of our existence. The scope of the series is absolutely breathtaking as professors make us travel to almost every corner of the pre-modern world. All in all, this was a really great reference for my purposes - delving into various world myths as an amateur. It only gets four stars because it could be a little more comprehensive, but it is definitely worth picking up if, like me, you're a mythology buff.

Fascinating series on the mythologies
This was a fascinating series on the mythologies of world cultures and not just the usual treatise on Greek and Roman Mythology. I enjoyed learning about Jewish cultures and myths, the Roman gods and the building of Rome, Egyptian Gods and Folklore, Celtic Mythology, The Norse Gods of Power, Myths of the Christian World, Romanian Mythology, and Greek Mythology. In each of these sections of mythology, the origins and stories were told through the knowledge and understanding of the time. These stories were seen as an inspiration for people to read and cultures to grow upon. The body of myths related to the collection of superficial beliefs, religious beliefs, and a set of particular people. The tales collected as a form of explanation to understand how the world worked. Overall, so much interesting information!

Comprehensive
As the title implies, this book is a comprehensive collection of mythical stories around the world, spanning a variety of cultures and time periods. The book covers well-known ones like Greek, Roman, Egypt, Norse, and Celtic Mythology. I liked that there was a section on Jewish Creatures and Myths. My only gripe is that there's no Vietnamese mythology, but that doesn't detract from me enjoying this book overall. This is a great anthology for those seeking a bird's eye view of the World's myths and legends. It's very helpful, entertaining to read, and easy to understand. It serves as an excellent reference guide to help you get your bearings - particularly useful for looking up mythologies that are unfamiliar to you, so you can have a good grounding for further research into favorite areas. It manages to be concise yet detailed.

Concise yet detailed
This book covers a wonderfully broad range of world mythologies and is already becoming a favorite of mine. It covers key themes that repeat across world mythologies as an introduction to the area (with notes for cross-references in later chapters in the book - very handy), then delves into separate mythologies from around the world in more depth, outlining the key beliefs encompassed by that culture/mythos. The book is also replete with illustrations, and more detailed featurettes on key individual myths. It serves as an excellent reference guide to help you get your bearings - particularly useful for looking up mythologies that are unfamiliar to you, so you can have a good grounding for further research into favorite areas. Had me at the first chapter!
Growing up, I had a love for Greek and Roman mythology especially of female goddesses like Diana and Athena. Recently, I had the urge to go back to relearning about mythology and so I decided to try this audio book.
Right away, the narrator's voice grabbed my attention. I was expecting a serious, dull voice to narrate but William Bahl did a phenomenal job. I loved that his tone was very conversational, upbeat, and made me really shut everything around me off just top pay attention to what was being said.
The book itself had me at the first chapter when it explained what mythology's purpose was for our ancestors, no matter where they were. Stories that helped them to survive, inspire, and solve the mysteries that still to this day has yet to be solved. Stories with a grain of truth. And stories that made them and descendants believe that there were higher powers that loved them.
Even though time has changed. Society and technology has grown and advanced, the book throws out a serious question -"What can we learn from these stories of ancient times?"
I enjoyed listening to this book and it's seriously made me reflect on my own beliefs and the stories that I've heard growing up. I highly recommend this book!

Exciting book to listen to
Always fun to read about Mythology and see the Gods and Goddesses come alive. This is a great book that I have listened to many times. There are so many rick and colorful stories in here that it is great for people who want to know more about Mythology. You will find so much here to enjoy. It is an exciting book that you do not have to read all in one sitting. It helps to have an interest in the subject matter. If you do chances are you will adore this book.

Clearly explained
I had this book for a comparative mythology course. It was one of the three assigned books and I can't think how else would have that worked. This book is more like an encyclopedia containing only brief information about various world mythologies. It contains abridged versions of mythological stories and their characters. In my opinion, this book cannot work as a standalone for an analytical study of world mythologies. However, it is a good reference book. I like how each mythology is explained

I'm very happy with my purchase of this book overall. The first thing I will say though is it is not a book for experts on mythology. It is more a book for beginners or for those who like to extra source material for research. I bought this so I could introduce my grandkids to mythology and teach them about all the different types of mythological stories and gods. This book is perfect for that and the illustrations are very bright and vibrant.

Informative choice
I love historical book and I think mythology is one of the important part of history, this book is very small but this provides lots of good historical information about different place’s people and their Mythology their believed, over all I like this book well writing. The book covers mythology from the following cultures: Jewish, Egyptian, Norse, Christian, Roman and Greek; it also defines the two different meanings of the word, mythology. For folks interested in this topic, I'd say it would be a good, informative choice!

Definitely worth it
Lots of things learned from the history of Gods, men, and the mythologies of the world. Many sources for them have been proposed, ranging from personification of nature or personification of natural phenomena, to truthful or hyperbolic accounts of historical events to explanations of existing rituals. Mythologizing continues, as shown in contemporary mythopoeias such as urban legends and the expansive fictional myths created by fantasy novels and comics. A culture's collective mythology helps convey belonging, shared and religious experiences, behavioral models, and moral and practical lessons. The author did an excellent job of researching this topic to make it more understandable and educational. I will definitely recommend it.

Several students have told me they also like the text and intend to keep it. They also appreciate the reasonable price.

Very informative
I love historical books and I think mythology is one of the important parts of history. This book provides lots of good historical information about different place’s people and their Mythology they're believed in. It covers mythology from the following cultures: Jewish, Egyptian, Norse, Christian, Roman, and Greek; it also defines the two different meanings of the word, mythology. For folks interested in this topic, I'd say it would be a good, informative choice!

Kept my interest
Always fun to read about Mythology and see the Gods and Goddesses come alive. This is a great book that I have read many times. There are so many rick and colorful stories in here that it is great for people who want to know more about Mythology. You will find so much here to enjoy. It is an exciting book that you do not have to read all in one sitting. It helps to have an interest in the subject matter. If you do chances are you will adore this book.

Happy with the purchase
I'm very happy with my purchase of this book overall. The first thing I will say though is it is not a book for experts on mythology. It is more a book for beginners or for those who like to extra source material for research. I bought this so I could introduce my grandkids to mythology and teach them about all the different types of mythological stories and gods. This book is perfect for that and the illustrations are very bright and vibrant.

Caught my attention
I have always had an interest in mythology so when I saw this book, I had to get it. The introduction includes commentary on the major classical poets used as sources, and on how changing cultures have led to changing characterizations of the deities and their myths. It is frequently used in high schools and colleges as an introductory text to ancient mythology and belief.

Incomplete review, will revisit
It's got whispersync so I'm going to try the text version. But the narration here is like a particularly obnoxious top 10 list reader.
