Publisher's Summary

Jake Tiptree has a problem. A coven of self-styled witches has taken over her Eastport, Maine, waterfront rental property for Halloween - and their repair requests are annoyingly frequent. But while Jake is normally game to take on any fixer-upper challenge, she'd rather be tackling her own needed repairs on her 1823 Federal-style home.

Until, that is, preacher Gene Dibble turns up dead - and the whole town is convinced that Jake and her tenants are up to sorcery and skullduggery. While the witches are complaining about ghostly moaning and her neighbors are chewing their nails, it's up to Jake to pry out the identity of the real culprit - before the killer nails her.

Too dark

Very disappointed in this one, I have enjoyed the series so far but I don’t think I’ll continue. I noticed the trend towards darker less humorous storylines in the last book, but this one takes it out of the cozy mysteries section of mysteries. Although not enough suspense to move it to the thriller section. Mostly just depressing side stories and the main story line was poorly thought out and strange.

Spoilers: Instead of the normal sarcasm and silly situations with just enough suspense to keep it interesting; this book has: truly stupid decisions by characters, childhood sexual assault, and Victor dying of a brain tumor, illegal drugs, and a very weird relationship between a violent adult man and a young girl. Most of the book is spent assuming she was kidnapped and being assaulted but at the very end it turns out she is some sort of animal whisper and was not kidnapped but instead had become friends with the man. With a confusing and just odd story line that didn’t really hold the book together.

Bad ending sensitive topics

I have enjoyed all these books but this one has secretive topics and as much as Victor annoyed me why why kill off a brain surgeon genius prodigy of a brain tumor! I'm disappointed. Life is real enough you listen to hear funny sarcastic idiotic stories not about molesting, drugs, teen drug struggles and and cancer... Death of a parent of main character. Nothing up lifting

Awful

I kept listening, even though the book was terrible, hoping there would eventually have a gist of what this story was to be about. I never found the answer to that question

Really, really good.

I'm not giving anything away, but I will say this book had a great tight plot and wonderful characters too. and it was cool to meet Wanda! I hope she returns.

Not happy

Spoiler: some characters are needed to bring humor to stories and annoying habits to pester main characters. Well this book quickly killed off such a character (it all happens in this one book) that I liked and didn't give a good enough details. Just hints then done, gone.
Plus the main storyline was a bit weird and the amount of times Jake hit her head should have had her in hospital with a concussion. It seems the formula for the books is really reaching for stories, having repeated bad decisions, and now adding in extra deaths.
Started listening because included in membership and debating on continuing. I think I'll try one more, because free, and see how it goes.

Great narrator

The narrator for this series is awesome. Sarah Graves has me so bonded with the main characters that I love her husband Wade and hate her ex husband Victor. I had such strong feelings that I cried (my first time) when they were rescued and I was not sad at all about Victor and his fate. I love these seriez and it is a combination of great story writing and a great story teller.

Best series until this ..

Sarah Graves is a phenomenal writer. Characters are real and each play an integral part in these well written books. But in this book the main character takes a turn to the careless and self absorbed behavior that many less capable writers use for the female crime solvers. Hopefully this is not the progression in the next books. You expect your characters to develop not disintegrate .
