Publisher's Summary

Mastering magic comes only with the greatest of trials....

Alec began his 18th birthday with the temple monks. By day's end, he discovers he possesses magical abilities.

Except his magic is unique. He doesn't require grimoires and incantations to cast spells. Alec's magic is entirely natural. He can, somehow, absorb the elements from objects and manipulate them according to his will. This power is incredible, but difficult to master. If he's going to learn how to use his natural magic, it'll take the tutelage of Archmage Diamondspear, one of the most adept magic users in the kingdom.

And Alec's training is not without its dangers. His abilities manifest and grow when he is in dire circumstances, and his teachers are not beyond putting Alec in the gravest of situations if it means his powers will increase. He'll battle monsters and creatures from his own world, and even those from other worlds. As he faces unknown dangers, he must learn how to harness natural magic....

Kinda Cringey

So to start the narrator is pretty good with the voices. Now to move to the other stuff. This audiobook felt like I was listening to one of those 12 episode animes that seem to jump around and confuse you, mixed with a wierd DnD character. It feels like I'd have to re-listen to the book to actually understand what's going on.

The characters are flat, and one of the mentor characters made me feel uncomfortable. Like playing up the creepy uncle role way too much even though he was "joking." I'm glad I got to listen to this free on audible otherwise I'd be sad a payed for it. Also the twist at the end made it feel like the rest of the story can be just thrown out the window.

Good enough

Enjoyable lite listening. Doesn't require full attention while multitasking. Should be part of a bundle.

excellent narrator, cringey story

the narrator was great, he probably why I could get so far into the book before I threw in the towel. I couldn't finish, the plot felt disjointed and as if details were added In as an afterthought, the story felt unpolished and the characters' dialogue landed flat for me.

Nicely Done. Everything you want in a fantasy

All in all a pretty solid read, kept me intrigued and looking forward to the next one.

Giving 4 out of 5 becauase there were several areas i felt were glossed over rather quickly and a few scenes were a little predictable in my opinion.

Good Story. Easy Listen

this book called me by surprise. I wasn't expecting it to be that good of a story or the narration to be that good. however, I was wrong and this is a very strong book. shorter than what I normally read but a pretty good storyline.

Great for a road trip

We listened to this over Memorial Day weekend. Half to the our destination and the other half home. We found ourselves talking about the book and speculating ya out the characters over the weekend. Great easy listen with enough humor and detail to hero the adults entertained too.

I really enjoyed this book.

I found this easy to get into and become consumed by. It was relatable to other similar stories at parts, but it also had its own unique display of magic that left me looking forward to what would happen next.

Too short

I loved it and was sucked in immediately my only complaint was it was too short but that’s only because I didn’t want it to end

it was OK until the end

The book had a lot of potential until it came to the end of the book. I like how the characters were struggling and learning Rather than just being naturally perfect at everything. However the last chapter should never have happened. It should have been extended at least 2 more chapthere's and the love scene in that chapter should not have been in there at all. This author does not know how to build relationships. Just writing in there that the girl who has shunned him the entire time and been Completely rude and dismissive of the main character all of the sudden wants to be in a relationship with him and kisses him.
It's an OK book right up until the end then it just turns to trash

Childish

I disagree with the previous reviewer, far too much happens with little logic or description. It feels as though the author is a teenager used to computer role playing where the actions of the main character need no reason or justification. This is a comic without pictures

Good story. Relatable characters.

We enjoyed this book. It took a bit to get going but was a different twist on a familiar theme.

School kid writing

Feels like a kids cartoon. Events are randomly inserted so the author can demonstrate something rather than because the story takes that route. "I've sent this mysterious letter via a rider on a white horse, as I can't be there but one day when you really need me we will meet again."...turns out that day was the next day. "bandits have kidnapped a kid" - not sure how the kid got out of the secure grounds, why the bandits wanted to kidnap them or why they chose the day when the most powerful wizard around was there....and why when Alex went out to the woods alone with a load of kids the previous day there was no mention of possible bandits (even though they had attacked him the year before).

Clumsy and basic

This story is mostly read fine, although a bit much - at times it feels like the characters from a video game. A bit of overacting, that is.

Now how it's written... It's progressing way too fast. The main character meets many challenges and overcomes them with hardly any effort. In the end, when yet another overwhelming thing happens you just sit back because you know he'll pull a rabbit out of the hat and save the day. Everything is progressing way too fast and it feels unnatural. Any potential dangerous situation is quickly dispelled because the main character finds out that he has more power and bam! Time to move on.

I’d call it a chapter not a book, fair start.

The feels more like the first few chapters of the book rather than a book as a whole , the story could be in more depth at points, it starts off fairly well but fizzles out to nothing and you clearly are meant to go but the following ‘books’ (chapters). There’s better ones out there that take 1 credit and are the whole book.

Has potential

An enjoyable story but seems childish in places. Phrases and descriptions were repeated word for word, like a film repeating shots because it had run out of budget. Characters seem a bit flat but could be the narration. Although I suspect the narrator struggled with the writing . That said, it has great potential as a story. Will see if the story matures in the second book.

My queendom for a good editor

The protagonist is charming and I would have loved to see where the story was going, House of Doors and all, but the language is so clunky and error-ridden that I just can't do it. It's too distracting.

Misogynistic undertones distract from the story

I don't usually review books, but I regret spending money on this one. Did not end up finishing this. Enjoyed the story/world building, but it is very misogynisticly written. Lots of "she'd be pretty if she smiled more" and similar themes, which made it impossible to enjoy the book.

not a complete story

I like my books to feel complete on their own merits. This book is quite simply one part of however long the saga is example they keep mentioning the academy as the place, the goal of where our characters are eventually headed. yet we don't get there. not even if a cliff hanger kinda way. There's no complete narrative here.

Natural Mage

Well performed, well written great story thank you DB. I don’t usually like academia books as the main characters are immature and emotional and most of them feel like a Harry Potter spin-off but this was really good. Thank you!

New author discovered.

Great story and enjoyable listening.
Recommend for those of us who are hearing and aged, housebound and obsessed with craft, I wish there was an omnibus available for the series.

Natural Magic

This book was quite good. I enjoyed the story line. It didn’t keep me spellbound if you pardon the pun, however I did enjoy listening and I was eager to go back to find out what adventure Alex was going to get himself into next. Eliera was a nice addition!!
I will look forward to the next book!!
