Story
Saving the dead isn’t as simple as promised. It was supposed to be a standard routine...that is, until we discovered that I was the first Soldier of Light to receive visions of the souls’ worst sins. The very sins that put them in the Dark Realm with the devil. Sins that are unforgivable. Hayden, my sexy guardian angel, tells me there are consequences if I don’t save these lost souls. But how do I save souls that have committed such despicable acts, especially when I have to live through their death in order for them to move on?

Story
I wouldn’t say my life is a dumpster fire — but it’s far from typical. I’m frenemies with the local werewolves’ Alpha, my clients are shady as hell, and my magic falls firmly in the WTF category. Mephisto, my mysterious and powerful client, is more interested in my magic than the jobs he’s hired me for. And I’m pretty sure my court-ordered therapist thinks I’m an ass.

As a college student, I spend my days in class and my evenings selling sage to PTA moms who do moon rituals to manifest better parking spaces. My best friend is a cat who likes pizza, and a “night out” includes hand delivering mysterious packages to the local “coven” of small business owners who repeatedly invite me to their meetings - clothing optional. My life is weird. But it’s not magic. Magic isn’t real. At least, that’s what I believed - right up until the moment he walks into my store.

I’m one placement away from becoming a fully fledged London detective. It’s bad enough that my last assignment before I qualify is with Supernatural Squad. Since I was born, I was destined to be one thing - the Alpha’s mate. It should be every girl’s dream. Not mine, though. He’s too dark and damaged, and I’ve got a secret he can never know: I’m not a true wolf. Instead of waiting for him to figure out that I’m an abomination, I left on my 15th birthday. But I didn’t go far. No way in hell would I let him drive me from the town I love. Ten years later, I’m still hiding in plain sight. When I occasionally see him on the street - deadly, sexy, powerful - I just walk by. Keep my head down. Until that night.

Publisher's Summary
If you thought death was the end...you’d be dead wrong.
Life was barely manageable after my mom was murdered three years ago. I wasn’t sure what my purpose was anymore. But then on my 21st birthday, I drank a little too much and fell from the roof of my nine-story apartment building.
I died. Then...I un-died.
Enter Hayden, my really bossy (and hot) guardian angel whose duty is to train me to be the next “Soldier of Light.”
Sound fun? Well, it’s not. I save dead people, helping them move on to the World of Light. And to make matters even worse, they are all troubled souls stuck in the Dark Realm with the devil and his army of demonic creatures. They roam my city’s streets at night, waiting for me to screw up.
The Afterlife is one of Death’s best kept secrets, and I’m living proof. I’m pretty sure I’m the wrong person for this job, despite what Hayden thinks. Guess I’m stuck saving the dead.

YA Soul Reaper
The narrators voice was slightly difficult to listen to, her voice changes were minimal and a bit grating. I loved Hayden but the MC Evika could be pretty whiny and felt more like a 16 year old than a 21 year old. Overall the writing of the story and world building was a bit juvenile but intriguing. I will be picking up the second book to find out what happens next!

I Wish the Book had been Longer
I enjoyed this book so much, that I was sorry to see it end. I really wanted to spend more time in this unique supernatural world. I wanted to know more, learn more, experience more. Sometimes I thought the main character, Evicka was really immature and annoying, but then she would take some time to think about it and she learned and grew from her mistake which made me like her a little more each time she did that. I really wanted to see more of her best friend, Joel. I hope to see him more in future books. He was really likeable even in the few minutes he was in the book. Truthfully, I found all of the characters really likeable. The only one that has challenged me in the main character, and that's because I'm probably too old for a book like this and I just find her young, self-centered, and immature. However, even she has grown on me throughout this first book and I can't wait to see how much more she grows throughout the series. The narrator did a fantastic job in this book. Her voices were spot-on. She covered all of the emotions and all of the voices with perfection. I would definitely listen to just about any book this narrator chose to read. I received this book for free at my request from Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.

Negative Zero was so entertaining and such a unique take on angels and demons! It was a great book to listen to on audio. I absolutely adored Hayden and loved how calm and level headed he was. I didn’t give Negative Zero a full 5 stars because Evika was a bit immature and annoying at times. That said, I think there is a ton of opportunity for character growth and I can’t wait for the next installment!

Gripping story
I received this book for free at my request but the opinion is of my own. Evika is having a hard time not only dealing with her moms death and the anniversary but of her best friend being thousands of miles away. She decides to try to have fun on her birthday but accidentally ends up dying or so she thought. She learns that she’s part of an elite group that’s in charge of sending souls that have gone through punishment to the light. But, not all is what it seems she finds out not only about her calling but how much she really didn’t know of her own life. Very gripping story from start to finish.

Negative Zero
What happens in the afterlife? Negative Zero explores those fun topics of Angels - Guardian Angels specifically - and what their role is on the Earth.
We get introduced to our main character right around the time she um dies. Oops. But we know that's not the end for Evika, as she awakens anew, alive, and confused. Now she has a Guardian Angel (who she's really had her whole life, but finally can know about). Now she is aware of this whole new world she didn't know about and keeps finding out more surprises from her family history of both deceased parents.
Oh, and um, her new job. Yes, she apparently now is a Soldier of Light, and her new job is to help lost souls cross over to the light.
The world-building is fun, and I enjoyed this take on Heaven and Hell in a more mythological way. These Seeker souls she is to help have been stuck in the darkness (Hell) and have this chance to cross over to the Light - with an Angel's help. So that's Evika's destiny - and you can't argue with destiny, right?
Well, Evika is young. I mean, she's 21, just barely an adult, grieving over the loss of her mother from a few years ago, and her priorities are not on straight. Yes, her Guardian Angel, Hayden, is hoTT, but come on girl see the bigger picture here. There is so much going on! Quit drinking and get your head on right.
Here are my complaints or at least what I did like - Negative Zero is written in a more YA-style fantasy trope, where the main character suddenly finds out she's something different or special, spends most of the book moping or fawning over a dude.
When I requested to read/listen to this title, I was intrigued by the "helping souls cross over" aspect. But in this first book, we are just getting introduced to that concept, in horrific ways. I won't go into that too much for spoilers but let me just stick some trigger warning labels on this book right now.
The story ends with the first soul being helped and I definitely want to read the next book because I want to see more about these souls, about Evika coping with the burden of this duty.
I listened to the audio narration, and really enjoyed the narrator. Great pacing and voice tone for our main character and supporting characters. Very pleasant and definitely a voice I could binge-listen to.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Unique paranormal story to get you hooked
This was a very cool, unique paranormal story. Evika, a girl full of pain, dies due to a bad decision on her part. Now she is seeing the man from her dreams. His name is Hayden and he is her guardian angel. Quickly he tells Evika how she is special and why she was brought back to life. She has a supernatural job to do. A job that runs in her family. Soon she is discovering family secrets and what she thought she knew about her life is actually the opposite. As she tries to deal with her life changing drastically and having a big burden on her now, she is also still the young woman who is grieving the mother she knew. This writers style and the narrator went wonderfully together. I felt Evika's pain the whole way through. Don't worry this isn't a story to just break the listener/reader. There is hope in this book and a lesson that we never know what life truly has in store for us. And talk about a hunky angel! Where can we get a Hayden?! The attraction between Evika and Hayden is electric. Is she destined to follow in her father's footsteps? I can't wait for the next book to be released!

Worth your time
I listened to this book in almost one sitting. I enjoyed the take on heaven and hell, the role of guardian angels as well as Soilders of Light.
I'm hoping the next book will explore saving souls a little more, especially how Evika handles the pressure and consequences of the job (when you read/listen to the book - you'll know what I'm referring to!). Either way, I'm looking forward to the next book in the installment now that the world and roles have been set up.

Unique & Second Chance at Life
This was a great redemption story and start to the Soldier of Light Chronicles! After her mother’s death three years ago, Evika has lost her purpose in life and still isn’t sure how to keep continuing on. On her twenty first birthday, she drinks a little too much, falls out if her nine story apartment window, and dies. Hayden, her guardian angel, brings her back to life months later to become the next soldier of light. Together, Hayden and Evika are supposed to free seekers, souls that are imprisoned to Alysto (the devil), that are still evil. This book has an unique and interesting twist of the afterlife, god, heaven, the devil, and hell. I liked that she didn’t automatically accept her new role and that she struggled with it as her journey progressed and she starts seeing things that she never had a desire to see. Evika is selfish and stubborn, but throughout her new life, she finds purpose, more about her family history, and self discovery.
J did a really good job with this narration. I liked the different voices that she used for each character and spoke at a steady pace.

Great story.
I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. I will say its a really long story. The actual story is very detailed and it was good but I felt it was a bit too long. It also seemed to take along time to get anywhere.
Evika's mother died tragically 3 years ago, she's very jaded(and a bit whiny at times) and drinks to forget. She dreams of a man with beautiful green eyes who is actually her guardian angel and after a drunken fall off her apartment's roof she finds out the true purpose of her life. There are angels and monsters and its a story focusing on good and evil. And as I said it's a really good story and the narrator did an excellent job. So much emotion. She was also good at doing the male voices which is sometimes what some narrators just can't master. You'll just need a lot of time to listen to it. Most chapters are around 30 minutes long there's one that's longer than that.

A great story, really super for YA and upwards
Ireland Gill has managed to write a 'must read' book for YA teens, using the sort of thought processes on interpreting good vs evil vs. 'paying your penance'. The heroine's impatience with this balance is well justified given her additional gift to read a soul's deeds. The relationship dynamics are well balanced for the YA audience. It did take me 2 chapters to 'relax into the voice'. I found that listening required a slightly faster tempo to pick up the right level of energy of the characters. All voices were very credible, which is a credit to the narrator.

Death isn’t always the end!
Evika’s life was unbearable after her Mother was murdered 3 years ago then on her 21st birthday she drank too much and fell from a high rise building . She died then un-died and Hayden her very bossy guardian angel told her she had a bigger purpose in life to train as a Soldier of Light to lead souls stuck in the dark realm and lead them to the light.
This debut was awesome and I eagerly await volume 2 .

Entertaining and great listening
An intriguing story with interesting characters. I particularly liked J Elizabeth Anderson's reading of the story. Very expressive with energy, passion and pathos in all the right places and with remarkable character vocalisations which really brought them and the story to life. A very enjoyable listen.
