Story
For years now, win-win has been the paradigm for business negotiation. But today, win-win is just the seductive mantra used by the toughest negotiators to get the other side to compromise unnecessarily, early, and often. Win-win negotiations play to your emotions and take advantage of your instinct and desire to make the deal. Start with No introduces a system of decision-based negotiation that teaches you how to understand and control these emotions.

A member of the world-renowned Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School introduces the powerful next-generation approach to negotiation. For many years, two approaches to negotiation have prevailed: the "win-win" method exemplified in Getting to Yes by Roger Fisher, William Ury, and Bruce Patton; and the hard-bargaining style of Herb Cohen's You Can Negotiate Anything. Now award-winning Harvard Business School professor Michael Wheeler provides a dynamic alternative to one-size-fits-all strategies that don't match real world realities.

Negotiation is part of every human encounter, and most of us do it badly. Whether dealing with family, a business or diplomacy, people often fail to meet their goals in every country and context. They focus on power and “win-win” instead of relationships and perceptions. They don’t find enough things to trade. They think others should be rational when they should be dealing with emotions.

Whether you've "seen it all" or are just starting out, Negotiation Genius will dramatically improve your negotiating skills and confidence. Drawing on decades of behavioral research plus the experience of thousands of business clients, the authors take the mystery out of preparing for and executing negotiations - whether they involve multimillion-dollar deals or improving your next salary offer.
What sets negotiation geniuses apart? They are the men and women who know how to:
- Identify negotiation opportunities where others see no room for discussion
- Discover the truth even when the other side wants to conceal it
- Negotiate successfully from a position of weakness
- Defuse threats, ultimatums, lies, and other hardball tactics
- Overcome resistance and "sell" proposals using proven influence tactics
- Negotiate ethically and create trusting relationships - along with great deals
- Recognize when the best move is to walk away
- And much, much more
This audiobook gets "down and dirty". It gives you detailed strategies - including talking points - that work in the real world even when the other side is hostile, unethical, or more powerful. Pragmatic & Powerful Negotiation Methodology
Although I have law school and legal practice as well as business world experience negotiating the authors' approach taught me a great deal.
They know this field profoundly, and provide both a theoretical structure and practical application tips.
There is absolutely gold here for the mining. However, if you are looking for a magical word or a hypnotic phrase you won't find them. Great negotiation results require hard smart work. This shows how to focus your efforts to make success happen.
This is a book I will be reading and re-reading over the years because of the depth of the insights the authors share.
I heartily recommend it!

Very good but....
I really liked the book overall, but they seemed obsessed of referring to Daniel Kahneman and Harvard professors. While I realize that Harvard is a GREAT school, it's not the only Great school. Most authors do research to write their books. It just seemed that they grabbed what was close and easy rather than doing what most great authors do. research, learn, and share with the readers. It just seemed limited to "this is what we already know and are comfortable with". BUT, overall, a very good book. I would definitely read again. I would just prepare myself to hear the same reference over and over (honestly, I wondered whether Kahneman was his uncle or cousin). It was VERY repetitive. To the point of annoyance. But I'll prepare myself next time

Title should be "Wimp Win"
I disagree with what most of this book has to say. I've been in sales and negotiating for some time now. This book feels like it was written by hippies trying to make sure everyone comes out okay and that's just not how it works in the real world.

Worked first try.
Long story short: I have a client that wasn't going to pay me, I assessed her BATNA and determined that I needed to remind her what her best option was. It wasn't good at all. In fact, paying me would have been a bargain compared to the potential consequence of not paying me. She didn't know my BATNA of course which was bad, but not as bad as hers. In the end, I asked her to make me an offer and I gave her a deadline. She called me with an offer and I accepted it. The only mistake I think I made was accepting her offer too quickly. There is a chapter on that, and I realized after that I should have countered her to get a few more bucks and not make her think that I was just as desperate as she was. But, either way, it worked. Great book. Thank you for writing it.
