Publisher's Summary

After my mate rejected me, I wanted to kill him. Instead, I ran away - which nearly killed me....

A year ago, everything was different. I had just left my home, joining the infamous Mountainside Pack. The daughter of an omega wolf, I've always been prized - but not as prized as I would be if my new packmates found out my secret.

But when my fated mate - Mountainside's Alpha - rejected me in front of his whole pack council and my secret got out, I realized I had one choice. Going lone wolf was the only option I had, and I took it.

Now I live in Muncie, hiding in plain sight. If the wolves ever left the mountains surrounding the city, I'd be in big trouble. Good thing that the truce between the vampires and my people is shaky at best and Muncie? It's total vamp territory. Thanks to my new vamp roomie, I get a pass, and I try to forget all about the call of the wolf. It's tough, though. I...I just can't forget my embarrassment - and my anger - from that night.

And then he shows up and my chance at forgetting flies out the damn window.

Ryker Wolfson. He was supposed to be my fated mate, but he chose his pack over our bond. At least, he did - but now that he knows what I've been hiding, he wants me back.

But doesn't he remember?

I told him I'll never be his mate, and there isn't a single thing he can do to change my mind.

To Ryker, that sounds like a challenge. And if there's one thing I know about wolf shifters, it's that they can never resist a challenge.

Just like I'm finding it more difficult than I should to resist him....

what is happening 😂 spoilers

There is a very weak storyline. Gem is an airhead. She's all sorts of in love with her intended mate but has literally only met him once in her life and run under the moon, which had her head over heels. They don't speak again until she shows up years later to be his bride, and she is influenced by the town hussy and others into thinking he chose another, then without actually speaking to him she confronts him in front of his whole crew of males and has him admit he's not mating with her for the next two moons. Ryker isn't any better in the communication department either, apparently. A match made in heaven! She flips out and runs off into the city to start a life as a lone wolf, but only makes it to the border of the city before she's set upon by vampires. Alex is instantly infatuated for unknown reasons and breaks off his fangs for her, she unwittingly accepts them not knowing what it means. He's claimed her as his mate even though she's clearly not interested. In the meantime, Ryker her true mate, is going crazy with moon fever whilst trying to find her since she disappeared off his radar the minute she put the vamps homemade tooth necklace on. Gem is so butt hurt from their last conversation-less interaction, that despite how much she wants to be with him she pushes him away repeatedly, and we begin this crazy back and forth. I'm so confused myself, I'm writing this review. She tells him no, then sleeps with him, tells him no again, then gets upset he won't mate with her when she keeps telling him no. They have yet to actually discuss each other's lives and what happened years ago because Gem is so emotional she doesn't listen to anything he says. She realizes she's being manipulated by the vampire only because someone has to tell her, she can't figure it out on her own. Then she goes to find him on the full moon to "talk" finally and somehow the freaking tooth ends up in her pocket because she can't seem to put it somewhere off her person, so she can't find him. She puts all puzzle pieces together extremely slowly 🦥 🤣. The narrator speaks slowly and enunciates so clearly it makes her inner dialogue sound like a simpleton. Then she is misled by a member of the pack she was in for two minutes, to drink a sedative. At which point I was laughing out loud saying, "don't drink the drugs!" Yet she's thirsty and wants to be polite because she was raised with manners not thinking power or instincts 🤷 She shed her Omega persona to be someone else but then suddenly she's acting like one again? She needs to make up her mind already on what she wants and who she wants to be. #lifegoals and all that. At one point she desperately wants Ryker, yet she has yet to fight for him at all. Not an alpha through and through apparently. My head is spinning. Not sure how this will end yet. This is cray cray 😜

Alpha?

This book frustrated me. I don’t enjoy reading about alpha-holes nor repetitive information. This book has both.

***Possible Spoiler****

With a shifter mate pretending to be an omega, who is really an alpha, she sure gets portrayed as a weak, non alpha. It really bothered me. If the male alpha of the pack could stand up for what he wanted and speak up, why is the female alpha so timid and just gives in?

Character flaw

Annoying main character

The story didn't completely such but it was a tough listen. I wanted to like it but it fell short for me.
Main character...I wanted to strangle her a few times. Not all bad but not worth the credit.

A whole lot of nothing

The whole book MC mentions she’s an alpha. She’s a lone wolf. She’s been gone for a year. And he’s not her mate. It didn’t get interesting until the end. The author should have focused on what happened in the end instead of the MC going back and forth within her thoughts. The narrator did well. I sped it to 1.2.

Not worth it

The female character is so annoying 🙄 she holds out on mating and just drowns on and on about how she does not know why two books of literal whining. I couldn't even get to the third book it was so bad. The Idea was wonderful if only her inner monologs was not so awful.

Hard to get into

It’s really hard for me to stay interested in this book. I feel the main character is so dramatic that it makes me dislike her and not want to listen to it anymore.

Over descriptive

Underneath all the over description of everything, there is a good story, but at times it’s so painfully drawn-out that it was a struggle to finish. Not sure I can attempt book two.

AMAZING

This was an awesome audiobook! I read the blurb and knew this was a book I really wanted to read it, but it wasn't until I listened to the sample that I knew it would be through audible. The narration was amazing and definitely helped add extra characterisation into each character. Gemma - the female protagonist - is an alpha female who has spent her whole life hiding what she is when the time comes where she finally snaps and stops caring after her mate rejects her. Physically leaving the pack is easy when the alpha doesn't try to stop her, however, staying hidden is the hard part. Staying away from all shifters, Gemma decides to try her luck in a vampire city where she makes a life for herself hiding her true nature. Ryker - the male protagonist - is an alpha all over, however, winning Gemma back means that he needs to start listening and apologise for their past. Their interactions are amazing and really reveal how strong Gemma is. Their romance is amazing and is a HEA guarantee. This was the first time reading/listening to a book by Sarah Spade and I was pleasantly surprised with how the book turned out. This is definitely an audiobook I would recommend with an amazing rejected mate romance and awesome narration. I hope you find you love the book as much as I did. Enjoy!
