Story
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Publisher's Summary
Winner of the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2018 Younger Fiction Category
Enter the Wundrous world of Morrigan Crow and Nevermoor.
Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she's blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks - and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her 11th birthday. But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.
It's then that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city's most prestigious organisation: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart - an extraordinary talent that Morrigan insists she does not have.
To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests - or she'll have to leave the city and confront her deadly fate once and for all. Perfect for fans of the Harry Potter series and His Dark Materials, this series takes listeners into an extraordinary world, setting hope and imagination alive.

Good but could be excellent
First and far most when reading understand that i really like the book but at the same time i feel it was some what lacking some epic sides.
Reader is splendid! Brilliant job! I just love how she does Captain North and i agree with other readers that if some were to make a film out of it. North should be played by Mr.Depp
I kind of hate how the beging of the book feels like alice in the wonder land and i feel that most of the epic scenes could have been pushed to be longer and more detailed so that reader would get to enjoy them more. Now they just flash trough. This is why no 5 stars overall.
Nevertheless i highly recommend this book for each and every who enjoy a book of fantasy.

wunderfull
The chosen one trope
A little Harry Potter esque
Fantastic narrator
Enjoyed listening to the story, and looked forward to picking it up every time
Morrigan did not play stupid, which i love
And ofc she is a wundersmith like the villain
But appart from that, great story
Got supprised a few times
Not much of a 'boss fight' in the end, but the last chapter saved it from 4 stars
Hope to see what the evil wundersmith can do in the next one

The next Harry Potter?
The story is wonderful and amazing, I absolutely loved it.
The performance is generally good, except for some of the character-voices which annoyed me endlessly.
I will recommend listening in spite of that tho', simply because the book in itself is so incredibly good.

Amazing
I could not stop, it was one addicting rollercoaster ride that I could go on over and over again. The characters, the plot and the writing was so captivating and exciting, drawing you into your imagination. The struggles, frustrations and challenges that you and the characters go through are both fascinating and infuriating to listen to. Gemma Whelan was a fantastic narrator who really captured the story and essence of the characters, even if she was dull at times. My favourite moments were the trials that thrilled and chilled you to the bone as you lived every second of the experience. If you get this you will not regret it because everyone will love it forever. I can't wait for the next book.

Love this book (And I'm a 50yr young!)
This is pure escapism, I've already listened to it twice. It's allowed me to escape the life of reality! It really is suitable for people of most ages. I'm interested to wait and see what book 2 brings. The narrator brings it to life with a good range of voices and emotions. I'd love to see this as a film... Johnny Depp would make a great Jupiter North...

absolutely enchanting
I thoroughly enjoyed this book - so much so, having just finished it I'm going to listen to it again. I loved the story, and the narration was perfect I'm a very fussy audible listener, and I'm sure I miss out on a lot of excellent books because I don't get hooked by the short sample. This book is nothing like Harry Potter, by the way, but unique and wonderful in its own right - no comparison necessary. As I sometimes wish I had a rough idea of the age of the writers of some of the reviews I'll admit to being in my sixties, and didn't need my grandchildren as an excuse to listen to this book!

Wonderful
My 7, 10 and 12 year olds all love this audio book. Brilliant expressive narration, and a magical plot full of drama and mystery. The author has constructed a richly descriptive fictional world which puts me in mind of Harry Potter in the loving attention to every little detail. Liked it so much we bought the sequel too.

A great book, will she be the next JKR?
My children and I loved this story. We were gripped from the start, what I liked was that this was not just another book about magic, it was quite unique. Harry Potter and Chrestomanci fans will no doubt love it though. My seven year old daughter in particular was very sad when it was over. The only thing I would say is that I felt like I was 'left wanting' at the end. Of course, it set itself up for the next book, but I would have liked a bit more of it in this one! The narration was truly marvellous, I could not have asked for more. I particularly liked Jupiter North's voice. Download it now!

Superb
I loved this book and I the narration was superb. The story has depth, characterisation and is utterly delightful. Lots of reviews are comparing it to Harry Potter but I disagree. The tone, world and nuance is utterly unlike the Potter books. It is a wonderful book and I am already waiting for book 2.
Gemma Whelan just brought this to an extra level. It is so important for an audio book to work as an audio book and so many narrators just read rather than immerse themselves.
I highly recommend the Book and the Narration.
