Bryan Cranston landed his first role at seven, when his father, a struggling actor and director, cast him in a United Way commercial. Soon Bryan was haunting the local movie theater, memorizing and reenacting favorite scenes with his older brother. Acting was clearly the boy's destiny - until one day his father disappeared. Suddenly destiny took a backseat to survival. Seeking something more stable, perhaps subconsciously trying to distance himself from his absent father, Cranston decided on a career in law enforcement.

Billy Crystal is 65, and he's not happy about it. With his trademark wit and heart, he outlines the absurdities and challenges that come with growing old, from insomnia to memory loss to leaving dinners with half your meal on your shirt. In humorous chapters like ""Buying the Plot"" and ""Nodding Off,"" Crystal not only catalogues his physical gripes, but offers a road map to his 77 million fellow baby boomers who are arriving at this milestone age with him. He also looks back at the most powerful and memorable moments of his long and storied life, from entertaining his relatives as a kid in Long Beach, Long Island, and his years doing stand-up in the Village, up through his legendary stint at Saturday Night Live, When Harry Met Sally, and his long run as host of the Academy Awards. Listeners get a front-row seat to his one-day career with the New York Yankees (he was the first player to ever ""test positive for Maalox""), his love affair with Sophia Loren, and his enduring friendships with several of his idols, including Mickey Mantle and Muhammad Ali. He lends a light touch to more serious topics like religion (""the aging friends I know have turned to the Holy Trinity: Advil, bourbon, and Prozac""); grandparenting; and, of course, dentistry. As wise and poignant as they are funny, Crystal's reflections are an unforgettable look at an extraordinary life well lived.

Publisher's Summary
One of the most accomplished and outspoken actors today chronicles the highs and lows of his life in this beautifully written, candid memoir.
Over the past three decades, Alec Baldwin has established himself as one of Hollywood's most gifted, hilarious, and controversial leading men. From his work in popular movies, including Beetlejuice, Working Girl, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Cooler, and Martin Scorsese's The Departed, to his role as Jack Donaghy on Tina Fey's irreverent series 30 Rock - for which he won two Emmys, three Golden Globes, and seven Screen Actors Guild Awards - and as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, he's both a household name and a deeply respected actor.
In Nevertheless, Baldwin transcends his public persona, making public facets of his life he has long kept private. In this honest, affecting memoir, he introduces us to the Long Island child who felt burdened by his family's financial strains and his parents' unhappy marriage; the Washington, DC, college student gearing up for a career in politics; the self-named "Love Taxi" who helped friends solve their romantic problems while neglecting his own; the young soap actor learning from giants of the theatre; the addict drawn to drugs and alcohol who struggles with sobriety; the husband and father who acknowledges his failings and battles to overcome them; and the consummate professional for whom the work is everything. Throughout Nevertheless, one constant emerges: the fearlessness that defines and drives Baldwin's life.
Told with his signature candor, astute observational savvy, and devastating wit, Nevertheless reveals an Alec Baldwin we have never fully seen before.

Embarrassingly petty
I like Alec Baldwin as a performer and I was excited to hear stories from his long career and life. Unfortunately, he suffers from a severe lack of tact and self-awareness here. It reads like a revenge piece against anyone who's ever wounded his ego, including but not limited to former colleagues, ex-wives, and Harrison Ford. I can understand someone choosing not to pull any punches in reporting their experience authentically, but Baldwin quickly proves himself an unreliable narrator, coming off as a bit of a narcissist. I get the impression that he's learned only as much from his experiences as it was most convenient for him to learn. To be frank, the book has already aged badly, and I have a feeling it will only continue to do so. Nice voice, though.

Who knew Alec could write?
I saw Alec Baldwin on a morning talk show discussing his book. I'm not a huge fan, but I thought I would give it a try. I'm glad I did! Wow, I had no idea that Alec Baldwin had such a talent for writing. This is a beautifully written memoir. I was hooked from the first sentence and binge-listened through the weekend.
Baldwin's narration gives his story an intimate feel, like you're his new best friend who he's sharing his life story and secrets with. I also have some new respect for this actor, who I had categorized as an arrogant hot head based on tabloid reports. There's some real substance behind the sandy voice and wicked grin.

About what you expect.
He did a good job narrating, but blames others for his problems. He slants or omits facts to fit his point of view. Little mention of siblings. Definitely a narcissist. I only bough bought because of sale. Never a fan, but am open minded. I think he just needed money given he now has 4 kids and is in his sixties hosting a game show!
One last thing, Alec, until Obama and most of his administration are prosecuted in jailed, there will never be liberty and justice for all! Trump 2020!

Nevertheless: A Memoir
I was hooked on the first sentence. This is an insightful, melancholy story of this actor.I could not stop listening. His Memories of movies is remarkable. He, like my brother and I used to stretch out on front of TV, laying on our stomachs chins in our hands, watching, Bogart, Cagney, John Wayne. Maybe the lives of introverted, lonely kids need to be filled with other lives. He had a list of books. I read it and kept saying "Yes". I would be remiss if I did not mention Baldwin's soft, and husky Voice. It, the voice and the story are hypnotic. Treat yourself.

Paid by the word?
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I wanted to love this book because I love Alec Baldwin's performances in 30 Rock and SNL, so I was bummed when I pulled the plug after listening for about two hours. (Does it improve after the two hour mark? If so, please let me know.) I didn't find AB's childhood interesting, though he tried to add a bit of dramatic flair here and there. After the second or third reading of random lists - such as, and I'm paraphrasing here - "here is a list of streets in my childhood neighborhood from north to south..." etc. I I gave up.

Alex Baldwin is like marmite, nevertheless great
Where does Nevertheless rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
firstly Alex narrates this memoir. he is honest and frank about his life and its ups and downs. he comes across as driven man , who doesn't suffer fools ( or the press) gladly, nevertheless I really enjoyed it..
Who was your favorite character and why?
I loved his antidote re how he got the name of the book.. nevertheless: perfect timing and made me laugh out loud.. his tale about his demise as a box office A lister was funny and honest I guess... when asked what the current producers thought about him, his agent said.. " Alex they don't think about you at all"... thats honesty for you..
What about Alec Baldwin’s performance did you like?
yes.. whats not to like.. his voice is intriguing and relaxing... his humour shines through.. a mans man for all that..
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
his relationship with his daughter and the years of lawyers .... billing him by the hour... terribly sad..
Any additional comments?
I look forward to his next memoir, nevertheless!!

Brutally, refreshingly honest
I have seen Alec in movies over the years and read about him in the tabloids so I knew a bit a about his acting career and media profile. This book gives his take on his movies, media, tv, politics, family and much, much more. He
neither spares himself nor others. He's also a gifted writer and narrator. Having looked at how the press have hounded him I also admire his restraint. I'd have decked those intrusive and provocative Mofos. I've now started 30 Rock to enjoy his comedy talents. He's a real renaissance man and this is a great memoir. It's not moany or self justifying, it's honest, illuminating and highly entertaining.

What insight
Inadvertently downloaded this book. Not a great fan of Alec however, since listening to his story, I'm a fan. A great Memoir

A bit bitter
Interesting story about an interesting life. But there were some parts where the bitterness, whether reasonable nor not, really detracted from the content of the book.
Alec Baldwin is a great narrator, though.

i had no idea
Alec Baldwin is one of my most favorite actors. His story gives a fantastic insight to his genius. Its fascinating to hear about the environment in which he was raised and the relationships with his siblings and parents. I really love how he takes responsibility for his mistakes allowing the reader to be his confessor. i highly recommend this book.

Suprisingly good, narrative style was spot on
Would you consider the audio edition of Nevertheless to be better than the print version?
Yes, another reviewer said that his voice was like Velvet= So true, the print version would have none of this depth.
What about Alec Baldwin’s performance did you like?
I really enjoyed the pitch and tone of his voice throughout, it felt like someone reading you a compelling story about the life and times of one New Yorker rather than a celeb just self indulgently blahing on about little details of their life to date.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Almost! I actually got through it in like 3 days. I'm just making my way through SNL bio's following Tina's and AmyP's and enjoyed this despite know very little about Alec Baldwin.
Any additional comments?
It's certainly not a comedy bio. As he states, he is not a comedian.. its the writers that write good comedy and have the ideas - he just knows how to act, and part of that is delivering comedy to be as funny as it was written.
Just to let you know, I work for Audible, but the views expressed in this review are 100% my own.

Raw and Honest
I really enjoyed this book well written, l like his use of language. Insight into the headlines he has been associated with. His social responsibility is impressive and interesting.
I would recommend this book.

Mr Baldwin sets the record straight
I wish that Mr Baldwin had not chosen such a depressing tone of voice to read his bio ... at first I was put off by it... but then the story of his life gripped me. If you like listening to actors talk about The Biz...you will like this book

The Great Narrator
His voice sounds like that of a storyteller that demands your attention and he certainly had mine throughout. Honestly, I came for the bit about 30 Rock and he delivered an entire chapter on it. Overall, a great underdog story and even better when he's telling it. The trickle of accents he portrays are definitely worth the price of admission.

Unexpected treasure
Who knew that as well as being a stellar comic and dramatic actor, Alec Baldwin is also a nuanced and incredibly insightful writer? A complex and self-confessed complicated person, Baldwin is above all generous at every level. I don’t imagine he would be entirely easy to live with (even for himself at times...) and I have much admiration for his wife Hilaria, who must have a nimble intellect to keep up with her husband, but he would be an extraordinary and loyal friend to have, and this beautifully-written, constantly delightful and always interesting autobiography makes me envious of those who are fortunate to have Alec Baldwin in their circle. Mr Baldwin, please know that, as a result of listening to you read your story, the extraordinary life of an ordinary man, every time there is some report of you publicly venting your frustration at intrusion there are people in the world who get it, who see the provocation and who support you. As an aspiring writer I have so much admiration for your talent with words and I sincerely hope that we will see much more of you in print/audio.
