Something evil lurks in the woods, on the outskirts of town. It lives in the shadows and strikes without warning, always with the same objective: to mutilate, kill and devour its victim. A monster with a cannibalistic craving for human flesh and a sexual appetite which, seemingly, cannot be satiated. No victim is left alive, and the scattered remains divulge very little to the police pathologist.

Unexpectedly good!!
It all starts when a man dies! An elderly lady tells everyone that unless he is buried properly right away, the curse will awaken. Nobody listens because the ground is too hard, and they call her a kook. But when Ernie is doing his rounds, he encounters the curse and nothing is ever the same for him again!
I thoroughly enjoyed the plot! It starts out slowly, but the tension builds continuously until the curse takes effect and then it ramps up even more. I enjoyed the take on the werewolf and how the curse takes effect, it was a nice twist. The characters were all well written and developed. It was easy to connect with them and become invested in their tale.
In all, this was an unexpectedly good read! I wasn't too sure what to expect, but what I got was a great werewolf read. I look forward to more from this author.
This seems to be Jon Oaks' first narration and he did really well. He was clear, easy to follow and read this well. I did find his voices for certain characters were very similar, but since it's his first time, I'm impressed with how good he did.
I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Classic 90s Horror
Night, Winter, and Death was originally published in 1990, and it’s important to keep that in mind when listening to this book. It is a typical 90s monster horror story with lots gory deaths (including pets), vividly described sex scenes (two attempted rape scenes included), and the overt sexual objectification of women. If this had been a book written in the last decade, I would have stopped listening after the second chapter. With all that being said, I found this book surprisingly engaging and enjoyable if viewed from the perspective that it was written almost 30 years ago.
I have high standards for narration, and I thought Jon Oak’s voice was pleasant to listen to and a great fit for this story. I would happily listen to other books by this narrator. Both the pace of the writing and the narration kept me absorbed in the novel. While I wasn’t terribly invested in any particular character, and I found every single female portrayed in the book to be wholly unlikable (hysterical, senseless, and weak female characters being another common 1990s horror trope), I still felt a sense of satisfaction when the worst of the characters were killed off. As far as the monster is concerned, I appreciate the different approach to the typical werewolf. The transformation from nice guy to bloodthirsty fiend was well executed, and the “curse” being passed down from one generation of small town decedents to the next was an interesting twist.
On a funny side note, almost every character in this novel wets their pants when frightened. I understand that this can be a natural response to fear in some people, but when by the time the third or fourth person peed themselves, I couldn’t help but laugh. While this book certainly wasn’t scary enough to induce pants-wetting, I did find it entertaining, fun, and reminiscent of the 90s horror books I devoured as a teen.

Fun Gory Creature Feature
So this book is from 1990 or earlier, it definitely shows. The beginning drags a little with some stereotypical archetypes and a number of characters you're meant to care about, but half of them come off too unlikable. The whole small town vibe is a boon to many stories but here just allows awful behavior. By the time these bummers start to add up the horror starts. That part is solid with all the gore and intensity you could want. It carries the last half of the book and keeps it a fun experience.
The narration is good, though I'll admit there were a few times I wish the narrator didn't try female voices. On the whole however he did good and his narration aided the frenetic intensity of the work.
I received the review code for this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this honest review. It's a pretty straight forward creature feature but it's fun and definitely worth checking out if that sounds up your alley.

The Curse
This is not your typical werewolf story when the changes occur with full moons the horror starts when Horatio is not buried and stored until the ground thaws. Poor Ernie Mulligan ex-cop who does paroling for several companies including the cemetery where he encounters the ancient curse and the action and horror begins. Enjoyed the character development favorites were Zach, Mona and Scottie and Mrs. Gladys Roberts. Recommend if you enjoy horror and werewolves. Ugh…
I bought this book thinking it would be a good horror story by the reviews, but as I listen to the book I realized that it was very old. It was so outdated it was almost comical and it sounded very amateurish compared to what is being written nowadays. Facebook should be retired to the free section. And I think that audible should date the reviews that people write because for all you know the review that you’re reading is 20 years old. Don’t waste your credit on this book it’s way past its date.

Fantastic! One of my new favorites
Loved the small town feel, good young character growing out of youth arc, lot's of characters who are very likeable and many who I wanted to "get what they deserve." Surprising deaths and character decisions in the story. Wish there was more to end the story, I sort of felt like the end was "to quick?!" I hope there is another story in the works.

Narrator: Jon Oak
I found the beginning to be a little slow as the writer sets the scene for the curse but that’s probably because I was eager to get to the horror and havoc that this original style werewolf would wreak.
The writer does a good job of portraying how isolated the town is and the hysteria that can lead to vigilante chaos. Overall this was a very enjoyable horror.
I love the narrator’s voice for this story, I found his delivery to be excellent and his voice well suited to the theme.

Surprisingly enjoyable
I suppose I could claim to be getting into the spirit of Halloween with this novel of a werewolf legend coming to life, but in truth I'm not a massive fan of the celebration. It existed when I was growing up, but it always felt a bit American and a bit faked, but only in the context of being an imported celebration. I did enjoy the book though, maybe a bit more than I expected to. I was reminded of reading Richard Laymon, way back before I discovered crime fiction, not that I could put my hand on heart and say Laymon ever penned a werewolf book.
Small town setting, remote, isolated, cut off when the weather is bad and obviously it gets bad here, the death of the oldest resident and the reactivation of the curse, which sees the unburied man biting nice guy, ex-cop, security man Ernie. Ernie then morphs into a werewolf and terrorises the town.
Simple plot as such, but I enjoyed the focus on the townsfolk, in particular, Ernie's niece, the young police chief, the kid reporter and the local author. A lot of the drama focuses on finding out more about the legend, concerns over Ernie and his health before he goes full-blown werewolf, investigating the murders, worrying about a pregnant wife, fighting off the unwelcome attentions of the town mayor who seems to think he can co-erce sex from Ernie's niece (name escapes me) who is also a teacher, a horny woman running an old folk's home and grabbing sex with the young employee and lots more.
It's a busy book, which as it progresses gets faster and wilder as the tension mounts. I think Pedneau might have had fun writing it. I hope so because I had fun reading the thing. I think the characters made the book ... their interactions, the conflicts, the sex, the legend backstory, the school scenes, the teenage lovers, the morphing and the escalation, with widespread panic, leading to vigilantism and mob fear.
Parking my realism/credibilty meter at the door, before entering this one, it was quite satisfying.
