Publisher's Summary

A boy is imprisoned by a witch and must tell her a new scary story each night to stay alive. This thrilling contemporary fantasy from J. A. White, the acclaimed author of the Thickety series, brings to life the magic and craft of storytelling.

Alex’s original hair-raising tales are the only thing keeping the witch Natacha happy, but soon he’ll run out of pages to read from and be trapped forever. He’s loved scary stories his whole life, and he knows most don’t have a happily ever after. Now that Alex is trapped in a true terrifying tale, he’s desperate for a different ending - and a way out of this twisted place.

This modern spin on the Scheherazade story is perfect for fans of Coraline and A Tale Dark and Grimm. With interwoven tips on writing with suspense, adding in plot twists, hooks, interior logic, and dealing with writer’s block, this is the ideal audiobook for budding writers and all fans of delightfully just-dark-enough tales.

More like, NightHOOKS

This book grabs you from the very beginning. As a 31 year old guy who absolutely loves horror i was worried that it would be too childish, but it wasn't. It actually had a spooky moment or two and was just over all very enjoyable. I cant wait to share this book with my nephew....when he's a little bit older haha. Hopefully the movie is anywhere near as good as this book.

This Book Brought Back My Childhood!

I grew up on R.L. Stine's "Goosebumps," and the Nickelodeon show, "Are You Afraid of the Dark." This book is like the best episode of either. Intensely original, with great pacing and lovable characters, this is a world I look forward to revisiting again!

Son gives it a 5/5/5!

We didn’t like the yelling parts in the book- the witch yells several times, but overall my son says the story and performance were really good!
Appropriate for an active 11 year old boy!

Read it months ago and it's still on my mind

So yes I am 35 and yes I read this for myself, no child asked me to. I LOVED this. I read the months ago and it still comes to my mind when people ask for recommendations. I was looking for something new and I came upon this. how can you not love a story that familiar but different in all the right ways. intriguing, different enough, well written and entertaining to boot!

A tale inside a tale

My son loved the twists and turns of how this story unfolded. It kept him guessing right up to the end.

Just the right amount of creepy

I really enjoyed the shorter horror stories that Alex wrote and I wish there had been more of them. The actual story sucked me in in the beginning, but lost steam about halfway through. The end really picked up again though and I found myself back on the edge of my seat. A really fun story, even in scary stuff isn't really your thing.

Deliciously dark

The more I hear from this author, the more impressed O become. The stories are twisted and dark, yet beautiful. He's a master storyteller that needs more recognition.

Not only a great fiction story but also teaches kids about creative writing

i’ve been adult and had this book recommended to me by a published author. Although it’s listed for children it’s got enough interesting things in it for an adult to thoroughly enjoy it also. In addition, since the main character is a child author, the story teaches children about what it’s like to write stories, in other words the craft of creative writing! Highly recommend this!
