Hailed as the finest combat aviation novel to emerge from the Vietnam War, Flight of the Intruder spent 28 weeks on the New York Times hardcover best-seller list and became one of the top-20 best-selling first novels of all time. An instant classic, the book was translated into more than 20 languages and made into a major motion picture. Its hero, Jake Grafton, became a household name and the star of many more Coonts’ best-sellers. Without question, the strength of the book lies in its flying scenes when Jake Grafton straps himself into the cockpit of his A-6 Intruder.

The four dead guards didn’t concern Mitch Rapp as much as the absence of the man they’d been paid to protect. Joe Rickman wasn’t just another foot soldier. For the last eight years Rickman had ran the CIA’s clandestine operations in Afghanistan. It was a murky job that involved working with virtually every disreputable figure in the Islamic Republic. More than a quarter billion dollars in cash had passed through Rickman’s hands during his tenure as the master of black ops and no one with a shred of sense wanted to know the details of how that money had been spent.

Publisher's Summary
In the latest military thriller from the retired Delta Force Operator and New York Times best-selling author, a hostage situation places America's most powerful political elite at the mercy of its worst enemies.
When veteran operator Pike Logan and partner Jennifer Cahill receive a letter from Blaisdell Consulting - the umbrella cover company for their real employer, a top secret counterterrorist unit called the Taskforce - they expect orders for their next mission-impossible tasking. Instead, they learn that their latest actions have gotten them fired, despite having saved thousands of innocent lives. Pike's shock and fury is redirected when their commander Colonel Kurt Hale asks him and Jennifer for help with a personal matter: His niece Kylie, an exchange student in England, has gone missing. Neither Pike nor Jennifer understands how critical her disappearance will become. Meanwhile, all Taskforce teams have been redirected to a developing situation. A terrorist organization has targeted military relatives of key members of the US government, including the vice president's son. Their seizure of hostages was far-reaching and meticulously coordinated, and the full extent of the threat - and potential demands - has thrown the government into turmoil. They face a terrible choice: cease counter-terrorist operations, or watch hostages die one by one. How much is a single life worth? Unless the Taskforce can decipher the web of lies devised by their enemies, the United States is about to find out.

Marvelous thriller; wonderful series!! Book #7
Every book in the Brad Taylor's Pike Logan (and now Jennifer Cahill) series has been outstanding. Brad Taylor is at the top of his profession with thriller novels as good as those of Vince Flynn, Dalton Fury, Brad Thor, Mark Greaney, Brett Battles, Mark Dawson, or any other author of the espionage thriller genre. With the 8th novel in the series, The Forgotten Soldier (not yet available for pre-order at Audible), being published in two months I decided to listen to No Fortunate Son again.
Taylor's audiobooks use a unique and effective narration style with Henry Strozier narrating the third person portions of the books and Rich Orlow being the voice of Pike Logan in the first person portions. The two have done the narration beginning with book #2 in the series. Narration simply could not be better.
Pike Logan is an ex-special forces soldier who owns an archaeological digging company in Charleston SC along with his partner and girl friend Jennifer Cahill. The firm is a front for their real business of sub-contracting for the US government for espionage work. There are other members/employees of their team. The books are packed with action and suspense.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND all novels and novellas in this series. The narration of the first book is weak, but all of the books are outstanding.

Enjoying the series
I've been enjoying the series, good character development, story lines are good. And I really enjoy when audio books use different narrators for the individuals. In the few books I've listened to Pike's voice "fits" his character. He sounds younger and appropriate for his character. The Griffey, older sounding voice is utilized for the other characters. It helps when you're intently following the story line. Unfortunately, there are chapters, or periods of time when Pikes voice does not return to the younger one. It switches to the more gruff, slower paced voice. It interrupts your concentration on the story as you realize it has not changed. It's just odd.
Otherwise, it's a good series if you enjoy the typical spy/adventure type novel.

If this is the best - I don't have to go backwards
To begin this review. I don't mind 2 narrators, but when they cross over to characters played by the other narrator - It's annoying to me. I have Rich Orlow in my head as Pike & somewhere along the way Henry comes in and brutalizes his character. Pike in general was uninteresting to me. A bit of a sissy. He didn't want up wake up early - He didn't want to run - He didn't want to get wet in the rain. Then I'm supposed to think he's some tough guy? Couldn't buy it. The plot had potential - But overall - I was bored. It was hard to stay connected to the story line with continued interest. This really is popcorn material. One of the reasons I don't listened a lot to series of books is because by the time they get to book 12 or 18, the material has little substance. Also - Most reviews are from die hard fans swayed by returning characters. This is my first Brad Taylor book & I am not thrown.
For what it's worth, J.

Terrific plot! Very realistic politics.
This is an excellent representation of the covert action thriller. I finished it within two days and can't wait to dig into the next Pike Logan adventure. I think that the inter-agency squabbles are on target and that the loop holes left for private, "consulting" firms paint a true picture of how important objectives are accomplished in the Federal government.
The plot is innovative and ought to become one of the Homeland Security disaster scenarios (if it isn't already). Buy this book!

This book is not good.
The plot was OK I guess, interesting premise with the kidnappings, but the dialogue was terrible, like at times comically bad, cliched and stilted.
I also hated the two narrators. Why? Why???? WHY?????? It was confusing and didn’t really have a purpose. I did not like this book.

On. The. Level.
I'm a natural born fan of military espionage thrillers. There's a good chance I've either read or listened to just about every military espionage thriller (to date), e.g. Clancy, Greaney, Child, Horowitz, et al.
In all honesty, despite having thoroughly enjoyed the first few Pike Logan novels, I didn't think the stories and Pike were on the same level as The Gray Man, Orphan X, or Dewey Andreas. But after listening to No Fortunate Son, I've completely changed my tune — Pike's character and Taylor's writing are indeed on 'the level' (Jennifer's character, however, not so much). This is one fantastic and badass story.
Additionally, Henry Strozier and Rich Orlow are genuine badass narrators. They both have the ability to weave in and out of a character's respective perspective with unmitigated perfection. And Strozeir's interpretation of Pike's voice is unique and emphatically authoritative. Bravo!
Highly recommended.
