Story
How far will he go to save his daughter? How far will he go to get revenge? It's 2053 and runaway climate change has brought civilization to the brink of collapse. Billions are threatened with starvation and mankind is slowly moving north in a world stricken by war, drought and superstorms - easy prey for the pandemics that sweep across the globe. Easy prey, too, for the violent gangs and people-smugglers who thrive in the crumbling world where 'King Death' reigns supreme.

Story
Money's tight and their new home is a fixer-upper. Deep in rural South West England, with an ancient wood at the foot of the garden, Tom and his family are miles from anywhere and anyone familiar. His wife, Fiona, was never convinced that buying the money-pit at auction was a good idea. Not least because the previous owner committed suicide. Though no one can explain why.

Story
Paul Gallo saw the report on the news: a mass murderer leading police to his victims' graves in remote Dread's Hand, Alaska. It's not even a town; more like the bad memory of a town. The same bit of wilderness where his twin brother went missing a year ago. As the bodies are exhumed, Paul travels to Alaska to get closure and put his grief to rest. But the mystery is only beginning. What Paul finds are superstitious locals who talk of the devil stealing souls, and a line of wooden crosses to keep what's in the woods from coming out.

Story
In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story.

From electrifying horror author Nick Cutter comes a haunting new novel, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and Stephen King's It, in which a trio of mismatched mercenaries is hired by a young woman for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven. Publisher's Summary
Darkness lives within....
Cash strapped, working for agencies and living in shared accommodation, Stephanie Booth feels she can fall no further. So when she takes a new room at the right price, she believes her luck has finally turned. But 82 Edgware Road is not what it appears to be.
It's not only the eerie atmosphere of the vast, neglected house or the disturbing attitude of her new landlord, Knacker McGuire, that makes her uneasy - it's the whispers behind the fireplace, the scratching beneath floors, the footsteps in the dark and the young women weeping in neighbouring rooms. And when Knacker's cousin, Fergal, arrives, the danger goes vertical.
But this is merely a beginning, a gateway to horrors beyond Stephanie's worst nightmares. And in a house where no one listens to the screams, will she ever get out alive?

Creepy, weird, and really good.
I loved this book. It was very unique. The story was weird and creepy, and like nothing I've ever read before. The narrator was excellent. She added to creep factor of this book. Her voice changes were not forced. They seemed natural, and made the other characters (other than the main character) come to life. I will listen to other books she narrates, and other books by this author.

Creepy but LONG.
My job requires me to do a lot of night driving. I am always looking for that story to keep me alert and awake. This one did it. It had me from the opening passages. when she describes he first night in a new place. Crinkling tapping from under the bed... instantly gave me goose bumps and saying 'Oh heck no!!'. I was hooked from the start.
The story teller did a great job bringing the characters to life and bringing the story to life making a movie in my mind.
When the story was half over it could have ended there. I would have been happy with the story. But it did not end. So many stories come to an end and the reader is left wondering what happened next. This story continues and ties up all of the strings. There are times when it is quite wordy and there were times that I needed to take a break because it seemed to go on and on. There were many times where I had goose bumps. There were times when I thought oh that's predictable horror story antics. Then there were times I really wondered if the main character had a mental illness.
Upon the conclusion of the story I was glad that I stuck with it. I enjoyed it quite a lot.

Dying for a Cheap Rent Flat?
Creeping dread, horror and supernatural psychological torment. Great story, expertly narrated. Gets a bit wordy and boggy near the end and the back story is a little convoluted, but I would still recommend it for anyone looking for pre-Halloween goose bumps.

Too long
I feel this book is a solid horror book and not a "thriller-suspense" as labeled. I think the narrator is fantastic and she did a great job. I thought the plot of this book was good but it was overly done, too long and just tired me. Not sure I recommend unless you like horror, super natural genre books.

Good, but too long
I enjoyed this book, but had some issues. My main complaint is that it ran at least a third longer than was comfortable. I cannot say what should have been cut and it may be that if anything had been cut I would simply not have enjoyed it as much, but more than once while listening I checked the chapter list and thougth "I still have that much to go?!".
The narrator is very good. When there is one main character in novel, it greatly adds to my enjoyment if the narrator sounds like I think the main character would sound, and Colleen Prendergrast worked very well for Stephanie.
The villains of the book were so obnoxiously despicable that at times I almost found it annoying. An odd complaint, I know. It may have been part and parcel of my issue with the length of the book. I had so much of them to deal with it began to bug me.
The story was solid and interesting and overall the book was good, but I did not enjoy it as much as Apartment 16, the first Adam Neville Novel I read.

One of the most annoying books I have attempted to listen to in a long time.
This book falls under my category of " How in the heck did it get this high of a rating.?"
After a couple of hours of listening to " I have to escape this place but I'm still going back into it every day" I simply couldn't imagine listening to another 12 hours of the exact same thing. Enough said.

This book took 10,000 hrs to listen to.
Of course, I'm kidding...or am I? S much of this book is filled with boring unnecessary details. I began spacing out many times and actually got annoyed at how boring it all was. It started out decent, but after I couldn't care less for the MC. She whined and went on and on about the shallowest of details. I just couldn't muster care for her. I just didn't have the attn span and kept checking to see how much more to endure. I got this on a rec from a booktuber, Jordaline. She usually recs good books but this one was not. I listened all the way through bc I wasted a credit on it.

I just can't listen any more
I am looking at almost 14 more hours of this book and can't do it. I suppose this could be considered a spoiler...but theres nothing to spoil. Working girl takes a cheap apartment. No money, poor pay. Grungy neighbors and landlord and she feels frightened of nothing tangible...
THATS IT. FOR HOURS. More Grunginess, more ill defined fear of nothing. I cannot do it. I have ill defined fear that this is VERY pointless. I am sorry Mr. Nevill. Returned.

Good story, irritating narrator
I’d previously listened to The Ritual by the same author & really enjoyed it so was looking forward to this one. I have to admit that initially I was a bit bored and found the narration of the main character very annoying. It took me a couple of months to finish this book as I kept stopping and moving on to something else. The first part was very good, lots of really tense & harrowing chapters but then found it started to waffle on and used far too many adjectives, it could have been two hours shorter at least. The last 3 hours were very creepy and was glad when my husband came to bed because I was so scared! All in all very good story but a different narrator would have made it much better.

I absolutely loved this book. I have had troubles finding a book that chills me to the core like this did. I have listened to Adam Nevilles other book the ritual and the way he writes is just out of this world. I love the fact that it is all played out in England as well. defiantly recommend this book to my fellow horror fans.

Too long. Much too long.
I saw a few reviews praising this novel and a few complaining of its length. I'm afraid I'm in the complainers' camp on this one. I found this book several hours too long.
A book of two halves. The first half felt a little muddled and often rather repetitive. The second half felt like an hour would have more than covered the story. All in all, it felt to me like the story could be told in half the length without losing anything. The main character seemed to repeat herself over and over and narrative was almost constantly, and unnecessarily reminding the reader of previous events. When I still had four hours to go I sped up the playback, just to be done with it and it ended as I had predicted hours before.
Sadly, I never felt afraid or nervous and lost the will to care about the main character.
However, the narration was excellent and brought as much life as was possible into the story.

Not as good as has been built up to be.
Have seen this recommended everywhere as creepy & scary, a must read..... There were parts in this, as a female that were truely terrifying but I didn't get as creeped out as this book is made to be. There's the real life fears happening & the haunting of the house happening & found the haunting aspects of this really luck laster & felt like a layer that was not called for. The two just didn't blend well to up the scare factor. I would have preferred if the book just focused on one or the other & I think I would have enjoyed it more. Also found it just went on to long & couldn't wait to get to the end to just move onto something else.

This was absolutely not for me
I truly didn't like this book. I managed to drag myself to the halfway point but it was a serious effort. The protagonist was ridiculously annoying and just sat with her problem instead of actively getting herself out of her terrible situation when she had the opportunities to do so. In some cases she even made it worse for herself by simply not thinking before speaking. This book made me feel icky and uncomfortable with some of its subject matter rather than feeling uncomfortable because I was amidst a good scare. It just wasn't at all my kind of horror. Whilst plausibility was my biggest issue with this book, I also found all of the characters to be incredibly flat and unlikeable. I really did not care about what happened to the main character, which was extremely problematic when the hook to the story was relying on me, the reader, caring deeply about the protagonist's survival. The book was well written but definitely wasn't to my tastes and I doubt I will be able to bring myself to come back and finish this story at a later time.

Incredible, edge of the seat, atmospheric, exciting and frightening!
I really enjoyed Adam's book, The Ritual and thought I would give this one a try.
What I thought was going to be just a creepy ghost story turned into one of the most edge of the seat exciting crime/Aldrich horror stories I've experienced in years.
The two villains are so disgusting and evil, but they are so realistic and well written. I really got a kick out of hating them.
The first part of the book deals with poverty, prostitution, kidnap, murder. The second part took me by surprise at first and was a little jarring. However it was a nice way to wrap up the supernatural element that is the cause of all the horror. One of the best authors in horror. Can't wait to experience his other work.
