Publisher's Summary

For generations, nobles have gathered at a scenic estate once per year to compete. What transpires there is spoken of only in rumors, save for the prizes. Potent, powerful, and precious; the winners are said to receive a gift from magic itself.

Reeling after their loss to Kalzidar, the adventurers from Maplebark can only press forward, following advice imparted by the gods. Their divine directions will lead them on a series of twisting paths, branching between old friends and new challenges, before ultimately pointing at a particular estate on a specific evening.

Thrust from the familiar comfort of the wilds, the party will have to navigate the perils of noble society while keeping themselves in the competition. Between scheming nobles, a hidden high priest, dangerous challenges, and too many familiar faces, just making it out alive will be a challenge. But surviving alone won't be enough; not with a vengeful god scheming in the shadows, and a stolen soul waiting for rescue.

If the party wants their chance to strike back, they'll have to find a way to emerge victorious.

Long awaited

The anticipated wait was worth every minute. This book is 24 hours long and needs a replay as soon as you finish it. It was wonderful right up to the literal last word. No spoilers, go listen to it, it is all kinds of epic that builds on parts of the characters that were entirely unexpected.
The only downside is the next wait. In the future when this series has been completed in its entirety there will be some ttrpg/ fantasy fan that gets it recommended to them and trades weeks of their life for an enthralling binge that they will carry with them forever.
In particular I feel like this series can be blindly recommended to anyone interested in the genre without risk of disappointing them.
Five stars all around, always on board for more of this.

The best in the series so far!

It has a great story, good humor, and a huge advancement of understanding the world and story. While all the other book were very fun and I loved them, this was the first one where I could begin to see a possible conclusion and begins to answer a lot of questions.
I personally love all drew Hayes books, but NPC was my first one, and have loved SS&S since. This was my favorite and the longest one, great narration and a great story, absolutely loved it

Did we listen to the same book??

I've listened to literally every audiobook that Drew Hayes has written and not only is this the worst in the series, it's his worst period. Three times longer than book 1 and 1/3 as good. Hour upon hour of grinding through pointless collection quests. There are enemies where the protagonists are literally invulnerable. And his obsession with tournaments is so bad here, there's even a tournament inside of a tournament. The worst sin though is wasting our time with no-stakes encounters which do nothing to further the plot or the characters. Where Super Powereds starts strong and gets better and better with each book, this series started with the stellar NPCs and has gotten weaker and weaker with each book.

The plot is not progressed substantially in this book and this series feels like there's no actual end. It's still Drew Hayes so the good writing style and well-written battle scenes get a few stars. Also there were a few interesting moments in the 'real world' setting so those were worth while.

I'm incredibly disappointed. Drew Hayes is SO much better than this.

Awesome adventure

Each book gets better and better! The story is complex and multi dimensional. I can't wait for the next one!

confusing in audiobook form

I don't remember the previous books being so confusing when switching between the characters in the game versus playing the game. it will be super confusing when you're listening to the character in the game for the first half of a chapter, and then out of nowhere switch to a completely different person outside of the game doing something completely different. I could get over it if it happened once or twice, and if there was a reason story-wise where they're doing something that interacts with each other and so it makes sense that it switches between people like it does. but it almost never made sense, if anything, it almost always made everything super confusing and made me need to re-listen to sections again almost constantly.

I feel like that didn't happen in the previous books, or it's been so long that I just don't remember it happening even though it did.

Drew does it again!!!

Just when you think that there is too many directions Drew pulls the strings and it really starts to come together. I LOVED this book and the whole series. The only thing that I don’t love is that I have to wait again for the next one. Thanks so much Drew for the fun ride!!!

Drew Hayes does it again!!!

Awesome continuation of this story! In this book things have come to a head in that alot of the things that have been being set up or explored in the last few books have all been blown up and we're getting into deeper waters so to speak. We're playing a bigger game in this book as well as seeing new sides to some of our beloved characters and learning more of their complex history. As always Drew's character development and relationship arcs are flawless. This book did not disappoint one bit!! (as to be expected)🙌🙌🙌🙌

Love the books from both dimensions

Pleasantly surprised when I got the alert for this book. I wasn’t expecting it after finishing the other books last year. Story keeps on trajectory. One thing that would improve the audible is a better idea when it transfers between perspectives. Sometimes things seem off and then you get a character name to realize the perspective shifted.

Fantastic writing if for some narration issues.

Another fantastic entry in this great series, a little slow and confusing to start but tying every thread woven together satsfyingly. This audiobook has the most narration issues of the series with an entire conversation occuring with the voices swapped, but asside from that it's still a good emotive performance. If you're this far into the series, I only see you being disappointed in it taking full advantage of its longer format to go at a slower pace.

Loved book 5 just like all the others

Hayes has done it again. After what felt like a long wait (not Patrick Rothfuss long, just COVID long) Noble Roots comes along and makes every minute worthwhile. Some of the revelations in this one are jaw-dropping, and seeds of mysteries are sewn but not reaped (hehe), leaving us hanging on until book 6, whenever that may be.

Absolutely love this series.

Another fantastic instalment

I have loved this series from book one and was delighted when I could pre order this title. Took me a while to get around to listening as I’ve been so busy with work and so it’s been the journey to and from work for a few weeks now but I enjoyed every single second. Delighted the same narrator keeps coming back and the story, although in some ways we could see what was coming is developing nicely.
This is not a stand-alone and you need to read the others before this but by the time you get to this one you’ll be just as hooked.

Another great adventure.

I'll preface this review with the fact that I'm yet to find a Drew Hayes book that I haven't enjoyed.

Noble Roots continues the streak with well paced adventure, continual character develop and an excellent narrator in Roger Wayne.

Possibly my favourite in the series so far.

Another great entry in the series with a fantastic performance

I am still loving the story and am very excited to without spoiling it find out the new stuff at the beginning of the next book. Only complaint is I wish the books came out faster but I still prefer quality of quantity.
