Story
A teenage girl awakens to find herself trapped in a coffin. She has no idea who she is, where she is, or how she got there. Fighting her way free brings little relief - she discovers only a room lined with caskets and a handful of equally mystified survivors. Beyond their room lies a corridor filled with bones and dust but no people and no answers. She knows only one thing about herself - her name, M. Savage, which was engraved on the foot of her coffin. She finds herself in charge. She is not the biggest among them or the boldest, but for some reason the others trust her.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
Homicide detective Bryan Clauser is losing his mind. How else to explain the dreams he keeps having - dreams that mirror, with impossible accuracy, the gruesome serial murders taking place all over San Francisco? How else to explain the feelings these dreams provoke in him - not disgust, not horror, but excitement?
As Bryan and his longtime partner, Lawrence 'Pookie' Chang, investigate the murders, they learn that things are even stranger than they at first seem. For the victims are all enemies of a seemingly ordinary young boy - a boy who is gripped by the same dreams that haunt Bryan. Meanwhile, a shadowy vigilante, seemingly armed with superhuman powers, is out there killing the killers. And Bryan and Pookie's superiors - from the mayor on down - seem strangely eager to keep the detectives from discovering the truth.
Doubting his own sanity and stripped of his badge, Bryan begins to suspect that he's stumbled into the crosshairs of a shadow war that has gripped his city for more than a century - a war waged by a race of killers living in San Francisco's unknown, underground ruins, emerging at night to feed on those who will not be missed.
And as Bryan learns the truth about his own intimate connections to the killings, he discovers that those who matter most to him are in mortal danger…and that he may be the only man gifted - or cursed - with the power to do battle with the nocturnals.
Featuring a dazzlingly plotted mystery and a terrifying descent into a nightmarish underworld - long with some of the most incredible action scenes ever put to paper, and an explosive, gut-wrenching conclusion you won't soon forget, Nocturnal is the most spectacular outing to date from one of the genre's brightest stars.

I loved this book. It was scary and a little funny at the same time. The characters were great!! Sigler makes it easy to imagine them. If this was a movie I would definitely go see it. Brian would most definitely need to be Tom Hardy.

Nocturnal Not Bad
Would you listen to Nocturnal: A Novel again? Why?
Probably not. The plot was pretty memorable.
What other book might you compare Nocturnal: A Novel to and why?
"Twilight Eyes" by Dean Koontz. Good guys battling unseen monsters.
Have you listened to any of Phil Gigante’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not sure but did a good job.
Any additional comments?
This was one of bargain buys but was pleasantly hard to put down. Well written and engaging.

creative author dips into the unknown
Would you consider the audio edition of Nocturnal: A Novel to be better than the print version?
This audio book was represented by an excellent actor, if you want to define Phil Gigante. The audio version made it an excellent drama as well as an interesting story.
Any additional comments?
During the Christmas season there isn't much time to write reviews, so I am not taking time to do this book justice. This novel has unexpected events, humor, horror, mystery, and romance in it . The vocabulary and the lay out of the story was well done. I also felt the audio part of this story was excellent. I loved some of the characters. Well done and worth the read.

Another AMAZING story
Love all things Scott Signler and this was no exception. I do not know how Scott comes up with this stuff (author of Infected, Contagious, and Ancestor- all EXCELLENT books too) but he has a unique story telling ability that makes you think of his books long after you are done reading them! My husband loves him too! Look what other amazing authors have to say about him-"A terrifying science thriller that reads like Silence of the Lambs as written by Michael Crichton. Inventive and deeply disturbing." -- Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Assassin's Code (love Assassins Code Series)
"Sigler is in full control of his talent for sharp characterization and amazing visualization." -- Charlaine Harris, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series
(love the Sookie Stackhouse series). You will not be disappointed, give Scott a try. Excerpt: "Doubting his own sanity and stripped of his badge, Bryan begins to suspect that he’s stumbled into the crosshairs of a shadow war that has gripped his city for more than a century—a war waged by a race of killers living in San Francisco’s unknown, underground ruins, emerging at night to feed on those who will not be missed". Where does Nocturnal: A Novel rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
it is in my top three
What other book might you compare Nocturnal: A Novel to and why?
there are no comparisons, unlike any other story I've ever read. But Mr. Sigler's style puts him in good company with some of the greats I've listened to.
Have you listened to any of Phil Gigante’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
i have not.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A greatest hits of all your secret nightmares!!!!
Any additional comments?
Mr. Sigler has created a completely new vision in sci fi and horror. The book's pace is fast and furious, and just the right touch of irony and humor. I believe that I will name any and all of the dogs I get in the future, Pookie! Loved it!!

Absolutely amazing.
What made the experience of listening to Nocturnal: A Novel the most enjoyable?
The characters are first class. the story is so clever, it's so funny at times then other times it's horrific.
What did you like best about this story?
I love the horror because it's proper full on, but I think the witty banter between Bryan and Pookie is pure entertainment.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Probably when Amy's family are held hostage by Pier Sly and Rex. She is given an ultimatum, choose one or I'll choose two.....BRILLIANT.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Laugh laugh laugh, and squirm.
Any additional comments?
Please download it, it is amazing, it's a lot different to the original as well, so even if you heard that one a few years back you should still download this one.

Utterly gripping!
I LOVED this book, absolutely brilliant.
Great story that had me utterly gripped from the start (indeed, I listened for such long stretches that I got a cramp in my shoulder from knitting for too long without moving!).
The characters are great, there's a fair amount of violence and nastiness (really too much for my taste, but I have to admit to being overly squeamish), and the story is - well, frankly, bonkers. But AMAZING, terrifying, gripping, fast-paced, really everything you could possibly want.
The narration is wonderful. All in, a brilliant audiobook. If 6 stars were an option they still wouldn't be enough.

Awesome
Nocturnal is the second book I've experienced by Sigler, the first being the absolutely brilliant Aliens: Phalanx, possibly my favourite book this year. That was of course, until I tried Nocturnal.
Take a buddy cop drama, throw in some heaving hitting murders, a heavy dash of nightmarish monstrosities - that's Nocturnal. From the characters, to the story, to the writing on a whole, it's all easily a 5-star outing.
I did a mixture of reading this one, and listening to parts of the audiobook when driving. The audiobook elements are narrated by Phil Gigante, who is now easily one of my favourite narrators, and breathes so much life and personality into the characters. Only criticism ( of the audio) is when there are internal monologues (the reverb is a bit excessive)
Nocturnal is worth reading/listening to - go check it out
