Publisher's Summary

"Twisty, grisly, genre-bending and immersive, Not Even Bones will grab you by the throat and drag you along as it gleefully tramples all of your expectations." (Sara Holland, New York Times best-selling author of Everless)

Dexter meets This Savage Song in this dark fantasy about a girl who sells magical body parts on the black market - until she's betrayed.

Nita doesn't murder supernatural beings and sell their body parts on the internet - her mother does that. Nita just dissects the bodies after they've been "acquired". Until her mom brings home a live specimen and Nita decides she wants out; dissecting a scared teenage boy is a step too far. But when she decides to save her mother's victim, she ends up sold in his place - because Nita herself isn't exactly "human". She has the ability to alter her biology, a talent that is priceless on the black market. Now on the other side of the bars, if she wants to escape, Nita must ask herself if she's willing to become the worst kind of monster.

Critic Reviews

"Almarie Guerra does an excellent job capturing the dark nature of the book and gives Nita a voice that shows her lack of social skills and her developing conscience.… Mature teens who enjoy morally gray characters and intense suspense will be drawn to the story."
School Library Journal

"[A] morally complex, edgy debut...Schaeffer’s antiheroes show empathy and insight as they struggle to define the line between human and monster. It’s a testament to Schaeffer’s excellent writing that these themes never overtake the characters’ stories."- Booklist, starred review

"The thrilling plot proves thought-provoking." Publishers Weekly

Oh snap

I didn't even know this was a book until somebody had done a comic based on this book that I thoroughly enjoyed but was too impatient to wait for the next week, and somebody put in the comments that this was a book and oh my goodness I'm so glad they did AND talk about a cliff hanger ending 😱😱😱😫😫🥰

Solidly good

Overall, a good book. Not phenomenal, but it kept me engaged. I bought the sequel before I had even finished this one. At times the narration felt stiff, but I really appreciated how the narrator knew enough Spanish to pronounce the names and places properly. Definitely gory, but not gratuitously so.
My biggest complaint is that if you're going to make a long acronym, and it's one that's pronounceable, then just read the acronym like a word, don't read the letters every single time. If I have to hear her read "I. N. H. U. P." letter by letter or more time, I'm going to scream.

I cannot sit through this voice for the whole book

I got maybe 5 minutes into the book, and the whole time the reader's voice was pulling me out of what I was hoping to be a really immersing story. I'd rather buy my own copy and take a little longer to read it myself.

Lacking Depth

When this book was recommended to me, it sounded really REALLY good, Quickly after starting, I found that it lacked story depth that I was hoping for. I also have a hard time with the main character - she's interesting, but I have no attachment to her.

As a whole it's an okay read, with a really good cliff hanger ending. I preemptively purchased the sequel at the same time as the first; maybe I will like it more.

ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOKS EVER

this book immediately pulls you in and you’re practically living it along with the protagonist Nita, you feel for her and Rebecca Schaeffer does a STUNNING job with world building and creating believable and multidimensional characters. I couldn’t put this book down, and bought the second before I even officially finished the first. I don’t know how I’m gonna make it until September for book three!

A great concept...

...and a strong start. but obviously, the ghost writer quit a couple chapters in, and was replaced by this Rebecca person. The author took what was a clever idea and an interesting world, and strangled it with lengthy pointless prose, characters that make the most frustrating decisions, and casual racism.

This is the first book that my fiance and I actually didn't finish, as it was that frustrating to listen to.

I wonder if the webcomic is better.

Amazing, thrilling story from start to finish.

As soon as I started listening I couldn't stop. Only listen to when you have 10 consecutive hours to spare :)

Enjoyable

Enjoyable, but ultimately forgettable. This book would certainly make a really good action film in the style of the Resident Evil series or Underworld with the strong kick-ass women in their sexy outfits.
I really liked the setting of South America and the Spanish language and culture. I think it was just too comic book-style as a book instead of a film. I have no idea what Webtoon is, but I guess this was a graphic novel on the internet. It might play better as a visual.
I thought the narrator, Almarie Guerra was terrific, however. She really made some characters and scenes come to life.
I don't need to listen to the rest of the series, but I will see whatever film comes out hopefully.
