Publisher's Summary

"This shocking true story is General Hospital on anabolic steroids." (Mehmet Oz, M.D., Emmy Award-winning host of The Dr. Oz Show)

The Emmy Award-winning star of General Hospital chronicles his astonishing and emotional life journey in this powerful memoir - an inspiring story of success, show business, and family, and his struggle with mental illness.

Maurice Benard has been blessed with family, fame, and a successful career. For 25 years, he has played one of the most well-known characters on daytime television: General Hospital’s Michael "Sonny" Corinthos, Jr. In his life outside the screen, he is a loving husband and the father of four. But his path has not been without hardship. When he was only 20, Maurice was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

In Nothing General About It, Maurice looks back to his youth in a small town and his tenuous relationship with his father. He describes how his bipolar disorder began to surface in childhood, how he struggled to understand the jolting mood swings he experienced, and how a doctor finally saved his life. For years, Maurice was relentless in his goal to be a successful actor. But even after he "made it", he still grappled with terrifying lows, breakdowns, and setbacks, all while trying desperately to maintain his relationship with his wife, who endured his violent, unpredictable episodes. Maurice holds nothing back as he bravely talks about what it was like to be medicated and institutionalized, and of how he learned to manage his manic episodes while on the set of GH.

Nothing General About It is also an incredible love story about an enduring marriage that demonstrates what those vows - for better, for worse, in sickness and in health - truly mean. Maurice also pays tribute to the community that has been there for him through thick and thin, and ruminates on the importance of both inherited and created family.

A shocking, riveting, and utterly candid memoir of love, adversity, and ultimately hope, Nothing General About It offers insights and advice for everyone trying to cope with mental illness, and is a motivational story that offers lessons in perseverance - of the importance of believing in and fighting for yourself through the darkest times.

The darkness and the light
"I am a proud lifelong General Hospital fan thanks to an early babysitter. And for the last 25 years, actor Maurice Benard has played lovable mobster Sonny Corinthos, flashing those dimples and swaggering into rooms as he became a daytime TV fixture. For a long time we all didn’t know that he’d been living with bipolar disorder since his early years, dealing with epic rages and depressions, breakdowns and medication navigation. After he began to share his story publicly and became a mental health advocate, he pushed a storyline that saw his beloved explosive character get diagnosed and seek treatment as well. His new memoir, Nothing General About It, gives us a deeper look into the highs and lows of his life all as he chronicles his childhood family dynamics, his enduring marriage of 30 years to wife Paula—who loved him through some truly terrifying times, and how he’s traversed manic episodes on the set of the iconic soap. It’s a candid and life-affirming listen made all the more resonant by Benard’s familiar and engaging voice telling his compelling and relatable story that has the potential to help so many."—Abby W., Audible Editor

Very honest and moving as well as entertaining

I originally purchased the hardcover book and then the audible version first because I’ve been a die hard GH fan since the Luke and Laura days in the 80’s and the character Sonny is a favorite. And second because I have had, and currently have people I love who are afflicted with varying degrees of mental illness, including bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression. I hoped that getting Maurice’s take on it might help me understand some things, and it did. I’m honestly so glad I purchased this book. I found it to be extremely open and honest and believe it could be extremely helpful for anyone out there who may be struggling with mental illness, whether your own or someone’s that you care about. Also, if you are a fan of Maurice Benard’s acting, it gives you an interesting look into his life and the course of his career. You’ll get to know his obviously very awesome wife and their children. Along with the seriousness of dealing with his bipolar disorder, there are also entertaining moments that make you smile, and a lot of heartwarming moments. If you are a fan of General Hospital there are a lot of fun references to his experiences playing Sonny over the years. The fact that Maurice narrates the book himself is definitely a big plus.... very personal. Great read.

Authentic & compelling bio elevated by MB's voice

I just finished listening and can't say enough about how moving this book is. Having followed Maurice as an actor and advocate for a few years now, I was eager for publication of his book. I am isolated at home during the COVID-19 crisis so decided to buy the audio version as a companion for my walks and household activities. Change of plans there, however, because I finished this in one day and now have to buy something else! I started listening at breakfast, kept it on during chores, at lunch, during my walk, only pausing to change devices. It's an emotional journey Maurice takes the reader on, managing: bipolar disease, the highs and lows of a notable acting career, and raising a healthy family while appreciating the singular blessing that is his wife Paula. The story makes you ask yourself: are you honest enough to really face yourself? Are you brave enough to continue the fight when you have no fight left? This book says: if you are, it's worth it. Plus there is Maurice's voice. Amazing. Thank you, Maurice Benard, and God bless.

amazing

this heartfelt and very personal story by a very publicly known member of daytime television was not at all what I expected. he gave details of himself that were obviously difficult to retail. as a person with depression and anxiety I didn't feel alone, and I don't expect to feel alone anytime soon. he is an amazing man who has overcome a lot to get to where he is.
