Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

Just After Sunset - call it dusk, call it twilight, it's a time when human intercourse takes on an unnatural cast, when nothing is quite as it appears, when the imagination begins to reach for shadows as they dissipate to darkness and living daylight can be scared right out of you. It's the perfect time for Stephen King.

When he was 19, James Stark was considered to be one of the greatest natural magicians, a reputation that got him demon-snatched and sent downtown - to Hell - where he survived as a gladiator, a sideshow freak entertaining Satan's fallen angels. That was 11 years ago. Now, the hitman who goes only by Stark has escaped and is back in L.A. Armed with a fortune-telling coin, a black bone knife, and an infernal key, Stark is determined to destroy the magic circle.

One day, I’m married, living in Seattle, and magic isn’t real. The next, I’m divorced and living in the guest room of my ex’s hotter-than-sin cousin’s place in Savannah and talking to an animated skeleton named Robert. I have to admit, Robert isn’t my worst date. At 41, I didn’t think I’d be starting over. But I’ll be damned if my ex thinks I’m down and out because he pulled a fast one on me. When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it.

Story
Lauded for the power of her writing and having attracted an online fan base of millions for her extraordinary spoken-word performances, Olivia Gatwood now weaves together her own coming-of-age with an investigation into our culture’s romanticization of violence against women. At times blistering and riotous, at times soulful and exuberant, Life of the Party explores the boundary between what is real and what is imagined in a life saturated with fear. Gatwood asks, How does a girl grow into a woman in a world racked by violence? Where is the line between perpetrator and victim?

Publisher's Summary
So you think you know all about superheroes? Those guys in the capes and the lightly starched spandex speedoes? Leaping tall buildings and always getting the girl? You don't know nothing.
Join Steve Vernon, Nova Scotia's hardest working horror writer, as he takes you into the world of Captain Nothing. It's a world without hope, a world that is as cold and dark as a landlord's heart, three days after the rent is due. It's a world that could give the Batman a case of the squirming night fears.
Nothing to Lose is a collection of stories that will show you the darker side of courage. It will show you the shadows in a hero's heart. Go on. We dare you to take a closer look.
You've got nothing to lose.

Dark Brutal Action
This starts out swinging for the stars and doesn't let up. This is a brutally dark and violent superhero who totally deserves his own comic book. The first story was great to get to know the character and the plot was even better. What followed wasn't the same level of intensity, but offered some graphic and somewhat emotional tales. For those who know Steve Vernon's writing style that is graphic and wonderfully unique and bizarre will feel right at home with Captain Nothing. Dennis Serra did a great job with the narration. I felt he captured Captain Nothing perfectly and voiced the story as it should have been read.

Guilty Pleasure
I should not admit this, but I loved these short stories by Steve Vernon. I understand he writes a lot of horror and I am going to find more of his stuff.
I am going to lose a few followers over this as they wonder what kind of weirdo I am, but I found these stories to be funny, intelligent, imaginative and very different. (very, very different.) Some people will be shocked. The language is bad, very bad. It is gory and there is rape. I like Abercrombe and George R. R. Martin, but this guy makes there stuff look sugar coated.
There are three stories and I found that I liked the last one, which did not have much bad language or sexual subject matter, to be the best.
You may not want to mention to your friends that you like this, but you know you do.

Lives up to it's dark, edgy claim.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Only with a brief warning.
What do you think your next listen will be?
I think I need a Artemus Fowl story.
Which scene was your favorite?
The initial scene when he rescues a woman being raped.. only after she's being raped. His drowning scene was interesting but vague.. not sure how he covers his body with the eel.
Did Nothing to Lose inspire you to do anything?
Only to write this review as a warning.
Any additional comments?
I am a big fan of George Martin and Joe Abercrombie but Steve Vernon goes far beyond them to new heights, or lows, of dark, gory script.

Captain Nothing. You're really something!
I'm sitting here wondering what the hill is wrong with me! I so enjoyed these sick, twisted, vulgar, violent, disgusting, yet soooo funny horror stories. Maybe I need to lock myself in a freezer! Steve Vernon, where did you get your mind? What a trip. How did you know we women have pans we hate to clean? Captain Nothing with a mask sown to his face? Oh, ya, and so much more. I'll be finding some more of Mr. Vernon's works.

A sin city style superhero
This is what a superhero would be in a sin city story. Dark gritty and not so super an noble at all. I’ve never heard or read a story with a lamprey creature or power used in quite so disgusting a way with such a unique set of side affects. The storyline is a good intro to a dark gritty world and would like to see more of it...be aware this is in no way appropriate for kids. I may have listened to it while walking through Disney world but thankfully I use an earbud.
