My Prison without Bars is a courageous and harrowing journey through the catacombs of hell, from the mind and voice of a little girl, living with her own monster underneath her bed. Written in first person, this novel is not a memoir, but more a psychological thriller based on true events; chronicling one woman's attempt to claw her way out of the darkness of Child Sexual Abuse, while struggling to find normal, in a not-so-normal world. It is poignant, dark and graphic; not for the faint of heart.

My mother was bipolar, mentally ill, a sociopath that not only got pregnant by my 15-year-old father but went on to abuse me in every way imaginable. This is my story. People have a hard time believing that women, especially mothers who are supposed to protect their children, can be molesters and pedophiles, but my mother was one. I am not only telling my story for my own recovery, exposing the sins of the mothers in our family, but to help others to see that if this happened to them, they are not alone, and they can recover and have healthy, reasonably happy lives.

From the outside, there was no reason to suspect the family life of young schoolchild Keri was anything but unremarkable. Two loving parents, a backdrop of 1960s Britain; life had provided for her, at least with the riches of modesty. Keri herself however, would often confound teachers with her erratic behaviour, which was at best sullen and withdrawn; at worst violently disruptive. When challenged, she would only exacerbate her growing reputation as a fantasist; weaving terrible tales about the "abuse" she was suffering at the hands of her very creators.

Excellent. No slow parts. Horrific wife abuse.
A tragic example of a wife and mother that stayed with her abuser, because that’s all she knew. What separates this book from the run of the mill wife abuse books is the way the husband forced the wife into a unique and disgusting form of prostitution. I won’t divulge more or it would be a spoiler.
This book is worth reading, and there are no slow chapters. Well narrated.,

Excellent book, very violent, but everything needed to be told. The abuse was horrendous. The worst I've ever read about. So heartbreaking I found myself so sad for Hannah over and over again. How one person could suffer so severely and crawl out of that dark place is beyond me. Hannah will live with the affects of the abuse the rest of her life and that makes me so sad for her.

Fasten your seatbelt!
Not for a great ride! This is possibly the worst Audible book I have read - if it was possible to give no stars, that's what I would have given it.
Spoiler alert!
Mean, ugly, brutal and honestly, I didn't find it very credible. So many things didn't add up - for example, HORRENDOUS abuse happening in a home where a third party lived yet no reference to how that person wasn't aware of what was going on... and others visited with much the same ignorance. Neighbours apparently hearing the abuse and no one ever calls the police to help... etc etc, a cover business that has no customers! The only saving grace is the narrator is quite good.

Horrifying but really worth listening to
I don't think I would ever have picked up this book to read but I am so glad that I listened to it. It really opened my eyes to the truly horrific things that can happen in an abusive relationship and the dreadful loneliness that the abused person finds themselves in. This true story is a real lesson for those of us who walk around with our eyes shut and say nothing even we suspect something. The sadest part of all was the end result for this poor woman, who to me really seemed she had been punished by the 'system' for being abused.
Listen and learn, I have.

True Survivor
Thais is very sad but true story of domestic violence at its worst! I was a victim of the similar abuse Hannah endured and unless you’ve been there it’s hard to believe how powerless women can be under the control of psychopath! Hannah you are the strongest person I came across in my life! Una Byrne has a lovely voice and her narration is excellent! Lindsey, mother in law has a lot to answer for! This book is a must to read as it is an eye opener to humanity regarding seriousness of domestic violence and how every one of us can help.
