The Alt Apocalypse is the ground-breaking, genre-bending series from Tom Abrahams. It explores survival under the most extreme circumstances, but with a twist (and no cliff-hangers). This series, which can be listened to in any order, features the same core characters in each complete story. A nuclear EMP attack would shove the USA back 150 years. Death, chaos, and lawlessness would prevail.... Zack Johnson is no hero, but he does have some valuable prepper skills to help him survive. There is nothing like a nuclear apocalypse to help a man grow up and become a hero as he helps his family and friends survive. He is 2,000 miles from home; the grid and all modern transportation have failed. The country is degenerating into violence and dog-eat-dog scenarios. It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

North Korea, China, and Iran conspired against the world and used EMP bombs to destroy our grid. This new series starts in the Kentucky / Tennessee part of the US. The grid is down, and people panic as planes fall from the sky and cars stall. The US Government collapses and rogue government groups rise to power. Jack Harp is Cole’s best friend’s father.

W. T. H.?
If this is the author’s first published book series, I wouldn’t be surprised. There are a lot of amateur mistakes that ruin this series. To name a few: overly describing things; unrealistic “timing” (such as a narrator taking too long to think while something serious is occurring); scenes drag on outrageously (that is to say, there is a criminal level of page filler); a lot of unrealistic and corny dialogue; many overused cliches; and, lastly, many stereotyped characters bog down the story.
Update: Christ almighty. I wrote “many stereotyped characters”, but I was wrong. Her work is nothing BUT cliches and stereotypes. The first story is as dramatic as a wet noodle flopping onto the floor. Nothing happens. I mean, the end of the US happens in an unexciting, predictable, anticlimactic sort of way.
The plot goes nowhere fast and the MCs accomplish nothing. The author, as I mention above, is dragging every darn bit of action out to the point where I’m fast forwarding through it. One scene in particular in the second book comes to mind. It was a travesty of suspense that lasted seven chapters (about an hour at 1.3x speed), starting with chapter 21. It’s filled with stupidity, empty threats, posturing, more empty threats, more stupidity, lots and lots of truly awful dialogue, and stupid thoughts on what’s happening, and, oh my god, why am I continuing to read this? (Update: I’m not. I’m done. Never again. I gave up partway through chapter 29 of book two.)
The bad writing doesn’t ever stop and it’s awful enough that I’m becoming embarrassed for the author. Kyla Stone can research nuclear warfare and thoroughly understand the consequences of it, but she can’t fold that knowledge into fiction in a compelling and interesting way. Furthermore, she doesn’t have an intuitive grasp of humans and their behavior, which is necessary to become an incredible writer. That missing skill is why KS’s dialogue sucks, why her characters are stagnant, lack imagination, and can’t generate genuine camaraderie or tension with other characters. It’s why I don’t care if any of them die. It’s impossible to become invested in these fictitious people because they’re not believable.
Don’t waste your credit if you’re an experienced reader and demand a lot from your authors. Seriously, don’t.

A story stretched out for no good plot reason
Get on with it. A for plot. C+ for story line. D for dialog. Characters should not stand around with half an hour of dialog only to discuss that they can't go half a mile to achieve one of the primary objectives early in the story. Just shut up and go do it already. Also maybe don't end an apocalypse drama with a Lifetime movie-style sob ending.

Very over drawn
The author over describing everything over and over again. The book would be half as long with out the over drawn explanations of everything! It took two books for them to travel 2.5 miles .the narrator does a great job . But it must have been painful for her to keep describing the same thing over and over . By the end of the third book you can easily figure out what is going to happen like an old nauar novel

I wanted to love it
I have read a lot of Kyla Stone’s books and I generally really enjoy them. I was excited to try this series. The thought of more than 30 hours to keep me occupied was awesome. I liked the premise of this story but it did drag quite a bit. There were a few times I considered turning it off and not going back to it, but ultimately I persevered through the whole thing. I couldn’t connect with the characters and I really didn’t care too much who made it to the end (although I wish there had been more to Ezra’s story because I loved those parts). The narrator was awesome and did great with the different voices. I’m glad I listened to the whole story but it’s not one I’ll ever re-listen to.

slow
I didn't give this book 1 star, because there are probably worse books. It took one entire book for the characters to travel 5 blocks. The voice actor is fine, but the story moves very very slowly. I made to the 10th chapter of the 2nd book , but I just couldn't continue. I have better luck with the free books.

One of the worst books I’ve ever listened to
Drawn out, internal dialogue every few seconds that is agonizing, absolutely unbelievable situations and conversations make this one of the worst books ever. I can’t believe this isn’t the authors first book. I really tried to finish but I couldn’t get past the first book because I love post apocalyptic stories but I was in agony just listening to this horrible book. Don't let bad reviews scare you away
When I first read the details of this book it sounded great!
then I read some of the reviews and decided against it, After listening to a couple of other books I decided to look at this one again, deciding that the premise sounded so good I would take a risk and decide for myself.
although it was not the best series I ever read or listened to it was far from the worst,
some of the plot was a bit far-fetched after all this is a book of fiction. by the end of each book and the series I was looking forward to the next installment
The plot and the narrator kept me interested until the very end. I am glad I took the chance and got this book

Typical feminist writer
Did her research. Wrote it like a prepper research paper. Unfortunately the characters weren’t realistic. They all seem to be the perspective of a gamma woman who resents masculinity and has a low appreciation and respect of men, not to mention an ordered understanding of how men in women relate to each other.
Seriously not worth listening to, even if it were free. The narrator was decent

Badass complex characters
This box set is awesome. I love everything Kyla Stone has written. Dakota is a badass character with a complex back story. The devastation in this book is crazy but so gripping. I absolutely had to keep listening to find out what happened next. Some real fear gasping moment in there for me especially in dark water without knowing what’s in there with you. Yikes my worst nightmare.
Kyla has so much knowledge of guns and survival skills which makes for an educational read too. I loved and hated all the characters that I was supposed to. This woman knows how to build interesting personalities without making them ridiculous. Character driven stories are my favourite style. Would highly recommend this box set and everything else Kyla has written.

Gripping
This book will make you judge yourself for the entirety and then give you a romantic ending this is my first story read by a female narrator and it has a female touch but it has all the awesomeness of any great book I listen to this book on my way to work and during my breaks at work and I couldn’t wait for another break at work.

Nuclear Dawn
Excellent series, fast paced and totally believable
Enjoyed every minute- even shed a few tears along the way and especially at the end
