W. T. H.?

If this is the author’s first published book series, I wouldn’t be surprised. There are a lot of amateur mistakes that ruin this series. To name a few: overly describing things; unrealistic “timing” (such as a narrator taking too long to think while something serious is occurring); scenes drag on outrageously (that is to say, there is a criminal level of page filler); a lot of unrealistic and corny dialogue; many overused cliches; and, lastly, many stereotyped characters bog down the story.

Update: Christ almighty. I wrote “many stereotyped characters”, but I was wrong. Her work is nothing BUT cliches and stereotypes. The first story is as dramatic as a wet noodle flopping onto the floor. Nothing happens. I mean, the end of the US happens in an unexciting, predictable, anticlimactic sort of way.

The plot goes nowhere fast and the MCs accomplish nothing. The author, as I mention above, is dragging every darn bit of action out to the point where I’m fast forwarding through it. One scene in particular in the second book comes to mind. It was a travesty of suspense that lasted seven chapters (about an hour at 1.3x speed), starting with chapter 21. It’s filled with stupidity, empty threats, posturing, more empty threats, more stupidity, lots and lots of truly awful dialogue, and stupid thoughts on what’s happening, and, oh my god, why am I continuing to read this? (Update: I’m not. I’m done. Never again. I gave up partway through chapter 29 of book two.)

The bad writing doesn’t ever stop and it’s awful enough that I’m becoming embarrassed for the author. Kyla Stone can research nuclear warfare and thoroughly understand the consequences of it, but she can’t fold that knowledge into fiction in a compelling and interesting way. Furthermore, she doesn’t have an intuitive grasp of humans and their behavior, which is necessary to become an incredible writer. That missing skill is why KS’s dialogue sucks, why her characters are stagnant, lack imagination, and can’t generate genuine camaraderie or tension with other characters. It’s why I don’t care if any of them die. It’s impossible to become invested in these fictitious people because they’re not believable.

Don’t waste your credit if you’re an experienced reader and demand a lot from your authors. Seriously, don’t.

A story stretched out for no good plot reason

Get on with it. A for plot. C+ for story line. D for dialog. Characters should not stand around with half an hour of dialog only to discuss that they can't go half a mile to achieve one of the primary objectives early in the story. Just shut up and go do it already. Also maybe don't end an apocalypse drama with a Lifetime movie-style sob ending.

Why all the hate?

I don't understand all the hate. This book is amazing. And the narrator is fantastic.

I wanted to love it

I have read a lot of Kyla Stone’s books and I generally really enjoy them. I was excited to try this series. The thought of more than 30 hours to keep me occupied was awesome. I liked the premise of this story but it did drag quite a bit. There were a few times I considered turning it off and not going back to it, but ultimately I persevered through the whole thing. I couldn’t connect with the characters and I really didn’t care too much who made it to the end (although I wish there had been more to Ezra’s story because I loved those parts). The narrator was awesome and did great with the different voices. I’m glad I listened to the whole story but it’s not one I’ll ever re-listen to.

slow

I didn't give this book 1 star, because there are probably worse books. It took one entire book for the characters to travel 5 blocks. The voice actor is fine, but the story moves very very slowly. I made to the 10th chapter of the 2nd book , but I just couldn't continue. I have better luck with the free books.

Don't let bad reviews scare you away

When I first read the details of this book it sounded great!
then I read some of the reviews and decided against it, After listening to a couple of other books I decided to look at this one again, deciding that the premise sounded so good I would take a risk and decide for myself.

although it was not the best series I ever read or listened to it was far from the worst,
some of the plot was a bit far-fetched after all this is a book of fiction. by the end of each book and the series I was looking forward to the next installment

The plot and the narrator kept me interested until the very end. I am glad I took the chance and got this book

One of the worst books I’ve ever listened to

Drawn out, internal dialogue every few seconds that is agonizing, absolutely unbelievable situations and conversations make this one of the worst books ever. I can’t believe this isn’t the authors first book. I really tried to finish but I couldn’t get past the first book because I love post apocalyptic stories but I was in agony just listening to this horrible book. Definitely won’t try this author again.

Very over drawn

The author over describing everything over and over again. The book would be half as long with out the over drawn explanations of everything! It took two books for them to travel 2.5 miles .the narrator does a great job . But it must have been painful for her to keep describing the same thing over and over . By the end of the third book you can easily figure out what is going to happen like an old nauar novel

Give it a try. It’s worth it

I let the negative reviews keep me away from this for awhile but then decided to give it a try. As the complete 5 books for one credit, it is worth it.

Great book series

Very suspenseful, lots of action. Seems very realistic. Liked the individual stories weaved throughout. Wish there was more to the end.

Awful

It's like a Mills and Boon novel. not keen on females reading this category of books, but it wasn't just the narrator, the story is awful. Only listened to a few chapters, then returned it

Such an epic story

Really good & believable story for something that could possibly happen. At times there were a few edge of the seat moments, but a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
Shall definitely recommend it to others.

Badass complex characters

This box set is awesome. I love everything Kyla Stone has written. Dakota is a badass character with a complex back story. The devastation in this book is crazy but so gripping. I absolutely had to keep listening to find out what happened next. Some real fear gasping moment in there for me especially in dark water without knowing what’s in there with you. Yikes my worst nightmare.
Kyla has so much knowledge of guns and survival skills which makes for an educational read too. I loved and hated all the characters that I was supposed to. This woman knows how to build interesting personalities without making them ridiculous. Character driven stories are my favourite style. Would highly recommend this box set and everything else Kyla has written.

Superb all round

I was dubious on getting this audio book with some of the reviews and well I’m so glad I went with my gut instinct. Superbly written it entices you in and you don’t want to stop listening. And the narrator absolutely nails it superb in all aspects I highly recommend this. Definately going to be a re-listen again. SUPERB ON ALL LEVELS

Kyla Stone is a machine

I was invested very early on, you are rooting for these complex characters from the get go. Kyla writes her story so well you can actually feel the characters exhaustion and frustration. Nothing is given to them for free and they fight tooth and nail for every bit of ground they get.

My only gripe (and it's very minor considering I would put this series way at the top of my library) is book 5 had moments that felt contrived in order to give one of the characters a moment to shine, but that's it.

These books are visceral, emotional, frightening and exhilarating, I've learnt a lot (as a budding writer myself) and there's a style here I am envious to emulate.

Stacey and the dialogue she is given is a powerful combo for creating unique sounding characters, you can usually tell who's speaking after a single word and she conveys emotion well.

Best series I have listened to in a long time.

Rubbish, don't bother, I couldn't finish it.

Repetitive drivel. Uses same adjectives from book to book. Reminds me of a high school essay where you have to meet a total word count. Not a patch on the "Last Survivors" books by Bobby Adair and T.W. Piperbrook, or the "Dave Hopper" books by John Birmingham.

Enjoyable box set

This was an enjoyable listen with some good character development and great action. The story is a little far-fetched as most in this genre are but it keeps you entertained from start to finish and is well written. I would recommend this novel without hesitation.

Gripping

This book will make you judge yourself for the entirety and then give you a romantic ending this is my first story read by a female narrator and it has a female touch but it has all the awesomeness of any great book I listen to this book on my way to work and during my breaks at work and I couldn’t wait for another break at work.

Nuclear Dawn

Excellent series, fast paced and totally believable
Enjoyed every minute- even shed a few tears along the way and especially at the end
