Publisher's Summary

A young wife and mother - new to this town and to its secrets - learns just how much she doesn’t know in this tingly tale of all the things hiding in the dark at the top of the stairs, from bestselling author Brandi Reeds.

While renovating her Victorian home, Ana Clementine finds an ornate door buried under forty years of earth. Once she restores it to the attic, she starts hearing whispers, her loving husband has become a stranger, and her baby daughter learns a chilling new word. Maybe Ana has unlocked the house’s secrets. Or maybe she’s becoming just a little unhinged herself.

Brandi Reeds’s Oak Avenue is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

The performance ruined it for me

The story was ok (felt very cliche) but the narration was terrible. Distracted me from the story and several times I almost stopped altogether. Why do her make characters all sound ridiculous. She should have stuck to telling the story and not acting out the voices.

Ok story, terrible narration

I thought the story was, “Ok”
But the end was...well without spoiling this short read, the end of the story was not that great. The narration was awful and it really ruined the story for me I think. Had I read it without listening, I probably would have given 4 stars to the story itself.

good quick story.

Enjoyed the story very much. The perfect amount of unexplained supernatural. I recommend for a quick listen.

I just couldn’t with this narrator

Most annoying narrator I’ve ever listened to. Especially her male voices. The story wasn’t that great but even if it was I don’t think I could’ve finished it.

genuine!

now this is my kind of story, it would have been even better if it was a longer novel. loved the narrator, she did a real good job.

Can we talk about the narrator?

Absolutely awful, I thought it was a robot until she deepened her voice for the male lines.
The story itself was lame, it had potential, but translated weak and pathetic, just like the protagonist.

Creepy take on the haunted house theme.

Strange reunion for a newly married couple as they return to his home town. You begin to wonder if his wife is making this up or if it is really happening to her. Makes you think twice about doing a renovation on an older home.

Oak Avenue

This has you hooked from the beginning, what an ending. Loved the characters and the story, was sad it was a novella. The narration was very good.

Bad cliché

For starters the narration is monotone and made me stop several times. The way side characters are "voiced" really is cringe worthy.

As for the storyline, it's nothing new.

Amy Landon is a TERRIBLE narrator.

This narrator is horrendous. Siri and Alexa have more inflection and personality in their voices than she does. After the fiasco that was Miao Dao (another book in this series) in which she repeatedly mispronounced "feral," I was dismayed to see that she narrated all of the books in the Dark Corners Collection. All of her male voices sound exactly the same--like slow, mentally challenged Texans. Does anyone at Audible or Penguin House have functioning ears? I was surprised to see that she's narrated over 300 books. I'll be sure to avoid those.

Ok!

I listen to it all so can’t be bad, and not predictable, good narration, love a ghost story now and again.

Not for me

The narrator is making it impossible to listen to this audio book. I don’t even know if I liked the story or not. I just couldn’t get on with it at all.

Great story, horrible narrator

I liked the story. It’s spoilt by the narrator though - she has a weird almost robotic voice - at first it sounded like a computer-generated voice. Then when she puts on a voice for male characters it gets even worse - sounds like someone putting on a voice to pretend they are really dumb and slow.

story ok but poor narration

This was a traditional move into a haunted house ghost story. it was easy listening but I did feel that the back story of the ghost could have been more in depth. the only thing that spoiled it was the narrator. I found her voice most strange and monotonous and the characterisation most odd.
