Publisher's Summary
Lieutenant Eve Dallas walks the thin line between love and hate in this fabulous 40th thriller from #1 New York Times bestseller J. D. Robb....
Eve Dallas has solved a lot of high-profile murders for the NYPSD and gotten a lot of media. She - and her billionaire husband - are getting accustomed to being objects of attention, of gossip, of speculation.
But now Eve has become the object of one person's obsession. Someone who finds her extraordinary, and thinks about her every hour of every day. Who believes the two of them have a special relationship. Who would kill for her - again and again....
With a murderer reading meanings into her every move, handling this case will be a delicate - and dangerous - psychological dance. And Eve knows that underneath the worship and admiration, a terrible threat lies in wait. Because the beautiful lieutenant is not at all grateful for these bloody offerings from her "true and loyal friend." And in time, idols always fall....

Expecting in Death?
The evolution of Eve Dallas has been amazing throughout the In Death series. The first book's reluctant friendship with Mavis started Eve down the road to relationships that she never could have imagined. This 40th installment puts people close to her at risk, forcing Eve to recognize the surprising number of people she cares about and who care about her. The villain is interesting but not central to this story -- the relationships are the focus.
J.D. Robb's stories standing alone make great books, but Susan Ericksen brings out the true excellence with her character voices and dramatic reading. I really enjoy what her voices add to the series. With only a couple of exceptions, I can listen to every book in this series over and over.
The entire series is built around a strong woman who has spent her life not just recognizing the difference between good and evil, but consciously battling evil and adopting the good that she finds in others. Her ability to adopt the good she finds can be painful and difficult for Eve, but it is just as often funny and endearing. This characteristic is the foundation for an excellent and long-lived series, and the murder, mystery and suspense only spice it up. Robb's vision of the future and the quirky humor really make this series stand out. And since the birth of Bella Eve, I can't help but see a hilarious pregnancy and baby in the future for Eve and Roarke, but likely no cows.

Addicted in Death
A fantastic #40. I listen to books whenever I am not working or sitting down - probably more than is healthy, but my greatest addiction is to this series. From time to time I wander back through the volumes and they never disappoint - even on a second or third listen. They are smart and funny and touching. Okay, so they are about homicides - but the misdirected puns and fear of cows and sheep never fail to make me laugh out loud.
I am not otherwise a big fan of Nora Roberts, but this series never fails. Major credit goes to Susan Ericksen for her phenomenal development of each character's unique voice.

For Those Obsessed w/ In Death!
NO SPOILERS! NOT A REVIEW
SUGGESTIONS/THOUGHTS/INFO ABOUT THE IN DEATH SERIES
As stated above this IS NOT A REVIEW just some suggestion/ thoughts and hopefully some information you don't already know. I think most of us listeners don't use reviews to chose books for fear of the dreaded spoiler but more as a blog to impart our feelings about a listen. I don't "review" any book I wouldn't recommend (why waste the time) and all books I review get a 5 star rating because I rarely listen to a book that doesn't have a 4 star or more rating and in order to impact the rating scores it has to be a 5 stars. The In Death series ranks par excellence of all my listens, the team of Robb/Erickson is my measuring stick for all my Audible listens.
#1 Thoughts/Suggestion: Lets face it if you have listened to all of the In Death series you are as "Obsessed" with this series as I am. If you are late to this Party and thought you'd start here STOP...DON"T...Go back and read the first three: Naked In Death, Glory In Death and Immortals In Death they encompass the crux of the series. Peabody an integral character in the series doesn't even enter into the series until the end of Glory In Death so it is essential that those you recommend and those new to the series commit to the first three in the series before they begin this adventure and TO BEWARE this series is obsessional and addictive.
#2 Thoughts/Suggestion: listen to Festive I.D as part one and Obsession ID as part two, These two books together are a companion set with quite a bit of overlap into Obsession ID. By my calculation Obsession ID begins less than three days after the Festive ID murder plotline concludes the set run together beautifully. The two books together also include a role call of most of the characters we have encounter in the In Death series so far by either literary mention or cameo appearance. Jamie and Tito to name two of my favorites'... don't take my word for it, keep track while you listen...it's fun, like a trip down the In Death memory lane.
In conclusion there isn't a book in this series that I wouldn't recommend, a few include the warning 'bloody and cringe worthy' but all have 5 star ratings. In Death is for the most part is predicating upon all the unique characters, each character's evolvement (psychologically as well as professionally) and their interaction as lovers, friends and co-worker. I think this is why I love the parties the most because it affords the interactions of a wide range of characters in one arena. Bottom line... NO ONE... HANDS DOWN beats the team of Robb and Erickson
INFORMATION: (you may not know) This is information was obtained from a recent Nora Roberts/JD Robb News letter...Quoting Ms. Robb.... "I’m currently in the middle of the first of two In Death books for 2016. Dennis Mira figures in a good portion of the story, and I’m as in love with Mr. Mira as Eve is. No details on the 42nd full length In Death right now – after all, I still have to finish it! "(end quote) .
Did you know that In Death was originally slated to be a trilogy... Quoting Ms. Robb... "The In Deaths have gone from an experimental trilogy about an edgy loner of a murder cop, to a series of 40 books and 10 novellas." (end quote)... I shudder to think all the enjoyment. laughter and tears we would have all missed if she had stopped at three!
to quote again Ms. Robb...
"I have no plans to stop my twice-yearly visits to New York of the near future, and I hope you’ll continue to join in on the fun" (end quote)
Thank the Literary Gods!!!...

Absolutely fantastic!
Classic Eve Dallas. This installment takes a page from some of the earlier books in the series. The "Unsub" remains a mystery to both Eve and the rest through much of the narrative. My speculations as to the identity of the perpetrator had me chasing red-herrings. I loved it.

stimulating
It is amazing that J. D. Robb still has some fresh ideas for the 40th book in the Death series. Most authors have burned out before ever reaching this many books in a series.
In this book Lt. Eve Dallas and Officer Peabody are investigating the murder of Leanore Bastwich a well known criminal defense attorney. Bastwich appeared in prior issues in this series. There is a message written on the wall to Dallas by the killer and signed “your true and loyal friend.” Then Ledo an illegal substance dealer and pool player is killed, poked to death with a pool cue in his chest, and there is another message for Dallas. Then the killer fails to kill the next victim providing Dallas with more clues. The Killer decides to focus on Dallas’s friends trying to decide which one to kill, will it be Charlotte Mira, M.D. or Nadine Furst.
The killer’s obsession with Dallas is a different plot than the other books in the series. The book has lots of futuristic tech along with suspense, there is less mystery involved in this story. Robb’s plots and characters are larger than life. They provide melodrama, snappy dialogue to the plot. I find I enjoy Robb’s short tight sentence, fast pace, and gripping style of writing; it works great in the audio format. Susan Ericksen is the narrator for the series.

I love this series
I realize the stories have become somewhat predictable but, I like the characters so much. Even though I do find it a bit ironic that it is the lead character that I find the most Irritating I still wait impatiently for every new story.
I think the narrator does a great job and how can you not just adore Peabody

In Death moves on
If you have not started at the beginning of this series, I recommend that you go back and do so now, before you listen to this book. The joy of Dallas and Roark lies in their past and the background story built up over 39+ previous books. While the books seem to stand alone, the real joy lies in the small details and the time line which progresses organically from Spring to Summer to Fall to Thanksgiving to Christmas to New Years Eve to Winter to Spring again. Start with Naked in Death. Enjoy!

YES!!!
I love this series! It's amazing that at 40 the series is still as good and as fresh as it is. This book is probably one of my top three in the series. The story is an interesting one. Most of the In Death books have a basic outline and this one strays a little, but in a good way. I liked the end. It is one of the ways that it strays from the outline and I really enjoyed listening to this one. Susan Ericksen does a wonderful job of bring Eve and Co. to life. This book did not disappoint. Seriously. Buy this book.

Another great story from JD Robb!!
This book, as usual was full of action and great characters. The narrator is very good at doing the voices of the many characters. I love the touches of humor when Eve doesn't understand something about the social aspect of being a friend.

Sussn Erickson always delivers
I've read the book (I usually do with audiobooks) so I knew the story. Favourite scene? I guess with Hastings. I remember him from Portraits in Death, so it was good to see the character being developed like that.
When I first started listening to JD Robb on audio, I wasn't sure about Susan Erickson (I still don't really like her voice for Peabody) but now, for me that's how Dallas sounds.

I have long been a fan of this series, but I am finding the later books far less enjoyable than the earlier ones. This isn't bad - just a little unoriginal. I enjoyed the reading, but the writing is a little formulaic, and I'm finding the obligatory sex scenes just embarrassing!
What could J. D. Robb have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
This series is increasingly hit & miss, perhaps if Ms Robb wrote fewer books and spent a little more time on the plot they would be more original.
If this book were a film would you go see it?
Probably not.

J D Robb at her best
Would you listen to Obsession in Death again? Why?
I've listened to or read every book in the series, many more than once. Its a series which is set in the future which may put some people off however little is too far fetched, except the flying cars. Twist in the tale is worth waiting for,
Who was your favorite character and why?
Favourite character has to be Peabody. Down to earth, sensible shoes, loves pink and the boyfriend. Never jealous of Eve money and status.
What about Susan Ericksen’s performance did you like?
Susan Ericksen's voice is great, don't think the audible versions of the books would be as good with a different reader.
Any additional comments?
Loved this series from the start. Strong female detective with a sexy husband and a down to earth side kick. If you haven't tried any of the In Death books give them a go.
