Everyone is up to something.
This book was not a book that I was overjoyed to read when I found it was about Bowen. I did understand that he is a major player in this world but to me there are so many more interesting people. For example Sliver's bother Arwen, who was introduced in Silver Silence. I would to have know more about him and also I love the Mercant family, but alas that was not meant to be.
When we left off in Silver's book Bowen was shot. That was something that I was not expecting but that was a nice set up for this book. Bowen was a good hero. When it comes to the list of heroes from this series he is good but not great. I was a bit confused about who was Kaia because she is someone that we are not been introduced to yet.
She was great in the first and middle half. She started to get a bit annoying when she just refused to believe that anyone that is family can do wrong. I might be a bit jaded but people are capable of doing anything that will hurt someone. Throughout the book many people and also Bowen stated that Kaia has a marshmallow heart but I was not expecting it to be that bad. I wanted to shake her and let her know that some people are just horrible individuals and that it is.
The relationship between the two was great. Very sweet and not that much drama.
But when I tell you the plot twists were just fantastic!!!!!! I was not expecting any of the characters that were exposed. It just seemed like to Consortium is grabbing members all over the place. I thought the Psy Council was sneaky and devious but of no. They are children compared to the Consortium! I cannot wait to see what they will do next.
There was an Easter Egg in the book and I have a feeling that a lot of people did not catch it. I find that interesting because Nalini Singh has hinted about that but this is the first time it has been OUT THERE!

Mixed feeling
I love the series, but this book I’m not sure. It had a few unexpected revelations. I do not like it when I figure out a book just a few chapters in. That was my frustration with this book, I did not have this issue with the other books in the series. It was a nice story,

I didn't really like this one I mean it wasn't bad it just was really for me. I don't know if Kaia keeping what she was a secret and Bowen just going along with it until she was ready to tell him. Or if it just was the whole sea thing. I don't know it was ok but definitely not my favorite.
The narration again was great.

Definitely not my favorite
My view of this book was influenced by the reading. I usually love Angela Dawe's narration, but not this time. It all seemed like breathy intensity to me, and it got old very fast. I might well have liked the book better if I had read it rather than listened to it.
Like some other reviewers, I found very little new in this book. I didn't find Kaia very sympathetic. Bowen was as expected for a Singh hero. It was fun seeing the water changlings (a 200+ year old turtle?!).

Cooking Again?
As a fan of the Psy-Changeling Trinity series, it is difficult to abandon optimism when a new offering is available. With the standard fillers of cooking, pets and insta-lust (hallmarks of this series), few pages are now devoted to the development of an original plot. The latest novels are primarily retreads of previous offerings. Most H/h issues are so shallow that even skimming is not necessary - just read the first and last two chapters.

Starts off more romance but then becomes sci fi
This was like two different books. It starts off with the usual strange feelings that eventually, after much attempts to fight them and many longing looks, make two strangers jump each other. But the second half is more of the great story that Singh writes well, writing about the sea changling in their home.

Decent offering in the series
I really wish the Ms Singh would read up on known cycles of violence & classic abuse patterns and stop incorporating those traits into “alpha types” & love stories. Because without that potential black cloud affecting my enjoyment, much of the rest is good story. Despite my enthusiasm for the Psi/Changeling worldbuilding, too much abusive behavior keeps slipping into the novels in the guise of “love” when it’s really selfish manipulation. In this story there’s a bit of that with Bowen, but several side characters go full nutjob - a note left for one of the women is all “you didn’t love me despite my not trying to approach you in any way so it’s all your fault I did dickish things.” No. No, No, No. Those in charge didn’t treat this guy as an ok dude, but there seemed to be no acknowledgement of the classic abuse patterns that dudes are too often allowed to get away with and that this was one. There were some smaller instances as well - where Bowen is determined to find Kaia (sp? audiobook) to make things “right” but his timing is all that matters - what’s good for her? not so much. It rubbed me the wrong way then and his necessary apology was barely adequate.
Mystery wise, I was surprised by some of the revelations of who did what bad things & when - some were even redeemable to a degree which is a relief knowing from early on that most of the traitorous behavior comes from within ranks. It made for good characterizations and affecting story.
Craft wise- Kaia & a secondary character share similar childhood trauma patterns that have come to dominate their adult choices - they both rejected therapy as kids and need it now if they want to move on. Differing traumas, but similar life choices running in parallel with unique outcomes.
The pet mouse was wound through the story well, only to be missing at the denouement which could have been a nice touch.
In general, though, Kaia & Bowen seem to want what’s best for each other & to be their best selves for each other which to me indicates a good pairing, so I liked the story well enough. Would recommend to fans of the series, but the extensive secondary characters popping in as needed for plot resolution might not make this an ideal entry point for a newcomer.
