Story
Ten years after the collapse, Huxley has built a good life again. He has a loving wife, a farm with fields of golden barley, and a daughter with a strange and wonderful gift. Then the slavers come. Working out in the fields during the attack, Huxley returns too late. His daughter has been taken, and his wife is bleeding out, her last whispered words about a man with a scorpion tattoo on his neck. Where do the slavers go? Huxley has no idea. He knows only that they head east, and so will he, setting out on foot across the desert of the Wastelands.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Homer’s odyssey revealed!!
I’m so happy to have this portion cleared up and to hear it blend seamlessly with the other pov.
Was it a good story? If you’ve read/listened to ANY of the others then that is the silliest question! It was as great as ever and of course R C Bray continues to excel in bringing a great story to life...in fact I think he adds to them.
If you’ve never read these books then sure you could read this as a stand-alone but why would you? Go to the beginning and immerse yourself in what is by far the best military zombie apocalyptic series (my son is part of one of the mentioned groups...can’t say which, and due to opsec he couldn’t tell me specifics but did confirm everything about the way the operators spoke, reacted, and behaved was on point so kudos to Fuchs and his research...this book is being passed around among sf groups!)

Finding Family
Homer finally finds his family - actually the kids and with the help of an ex cop that was surviving with her family in a cabin. Fights internal demons and real ones in the form of his old batallion group that has taken over. He is almost all alone trying t do the right thing to be able to bring his kids back to the ship to safety.
Not sure how the other characters in the series are doing but this is a great stand alone. Kind of sad coming to the end of this series but if there is a spin off I'm all in.

The best in the series
I listened to all the Arisen books but did not know about this gem. Of course RC Bray is the best narrator going at audible. And I really enjoyed the series, but I felt this was by far the best. Mostly because of the character development.

Outstanding!
Maybe best of show? I read the series in a blur a couple of years ago. it was like watching a train wreck but I couldn't take my eyes or ears away. it was a blur and I promised myself to relisten, so this subsequent stand-alone novel filling in the details of sub-plot maybe seems so good because it is only one book. The series was the audible equivalent of a page turner, even if the pages were often re-turned just to make sure I heard what I was hearing.

Homer's story
I always wondered what happened on Sara and Homer's journey, the perils, the trials both mental physical and for Homer, spiritual. I was not disappointed. Homer has always been a very interesting character mostly because of his faith which although wavering it is his armour against what many in the end of days would say, "there is no GOD..." and while he does question himself and yes he wavers, he is always true to his nature and his faith. It is this just as much as Sara's own journey to understand her feelings about what happened at the cabin and the death of her family. Together they are on a perilous journey where they find out more about themselves and each other as they face several dangerous situations.
Yes, this is a novel about the dead but it is more about two people that need closure in more ways that just finding a missing family and doing what is right by them.
Homer needs to know what happened to his family and Sara has to make sure her own is no longer one of the walking dead.
Their journeys are much the same but vastly different and so hard to explain.
Yes, there is danger and Homer comes face to face with old friends and old team mates some who don't really welcome him, but need his expertise and knowlege.
A battle for survival against humans is probably the worst and this is one of the better stories in this saga. A must for any fan....

Fuchs Scratches an Itch!
I think anyone who has read this series has probably wondered why Homer and Sarah's epic journey across North America to rescue his family was never covered in the original series. It's always seemed odd to me and it seems it's struck enough of a chord with Mr Fuchs too. This book now makes the series feel more complete.
This one isn't quite as fast-paced as the concluding the books in the series were . . . but then again, what is? It's still got plenty of action though and we learn a lot more about Homer's background in the Navy Seals.
It's a really good addition to the series although perhaps the journey itself wasn't quite as epic as it might have been though the last few hours are up there with the best of the rest of Arisen. Of course with RC Bray at the microphone it sounds just great too making it a worthy companion to this thrilling series.

Brilliant side story involving Homer
I was skeptical about this book after having finished the Arisen series, since it involves previous events in the life of characters who don't all survive in the main books. Also, this book isn't about saving the world but rather Homer and Sarah's road trip across America.
How wrong I was. Ok, this is less about the dead (they're still there, though) and more about Homer's struggle and other people. There isn't the non-stop action from some of the other books or anything like the same bodycount. But it isn't dull for one minute. The plot is fairly predictable (Homer obviously survives which means the bad guys don't) and it's highly informative about the SEALs and DEVGRU, presented in Fuchs' usual gripping style. But I didn't have a problem with that since it was well written and with more references to contemporary media (especially the Walking Dead and Game of Thrones) as well the Hobbit movies. If you liked the main series, you will enjoy this, too, even though it's not part of the main storyline.
Also, as always, it's brilliantly narrated. The only downside is that after listening to R.C. Bray badass style, zombie apocalypse and military books narrated by someone else don't sound as good and are harder to enjoy.
If possible, I recommend listening to this after book 5 but before book 6.

I finished this audio book in one day, didn't even want to have to stop for a break!
Wanting the next instalment Now, Now, Now. (Just as long if it's as well written as this one).
Overall I was left wanting the next book at my fingertips so I could continue following the action, I don't really like too much unnecessary gore and slobbering in a story, I prefer a swift moving story with constant action and confrontation to overcome via the abilities of the characters; this book delivered admirably.
Watch out for the grizzly bear, it's a short paragraph but perfectly placed with an unexpected twist, that made me laugh out loud.

Pretty good for a 'filler'.
It was obvious, right from when Homer's journey was glossed over in the main series, that a 'stand-alone' was en route. (Call me cynical, but I am fully expecting a short story about Homer's mission to deal with the Russian boat in the near future!)
I did enjoy this, but it would have been better placed within the main series. As a 'stand alone', we already know what happens at the end, therefore there is no real sense of peril!
Well-performed as always by RC Bray.

Scratch that itch
Fantastic to finally fill that gap after book 3! Excellent narration brings Homer & Sarah's journey to life. Must have for anyone that loves the Arisen series.

Brilliant side step
As brilliant as every other book in the Arisen series. I really enjoyed it. Homer is invincible.
