Publisher's Summary

I always believed in what I could see. Sure, I was raised in one of those Christian nondenominational churches by my parents and a very strict Mimi, but my beliefs were not exactly solid. That all changed when I found myself rocketing through the cosmos, after hitting an ambush while on patrol in the sandbox. I landed in a magic circle made by an archmage bent on world domination. Spoiler alert, Fantasy Hitler isn't bulletproof!

Now I'm in a foreign land full of humans, elves, dwarves, and gnomes. No electricity, no decent music, and worst of all, basic hygiene isn't a concept these backward idiots have figured out. I'm doing my best to survive and find a way home. I've got a limited supply of ammo to feed my M4, a limited amount of batteries to power nods, two frags, and one claymore.

My name is Staff Sergeant Kevin Holden, and this is my story.

Enjoyed the POV

Although the writer was either “a” or heavily influenced by a uni browed slope skulled mouth breathing dirt rat army poge. I had to get at least one in for the FMF! I was a fleet medic Navy green side. Some of those marine jabs were spot on. Aside from the service jokes. This story had me rolling as I understood each and every gripe or moan. I hope to see more from this author. And remember Purple tastes like crayon!

Not a soup sandwich

I’m not a literary expert. Nor am I a brilliant man. I’m just an old grunt. So that’s the viewpoint for this review.

The book is well written. It flows well and keeps your interest. The author has written this in a way that anyone can enjoy. However, it is one of the first fiction books that I’ve read, which got the grunt personality and characteristics right. The actions taken make sense. The phrases, terminology, and humor are spot on. That alone, makes it worth the read.

What a great story

I love fantasy and military sci fi. This book is mostly fantasy and is a great fish out of water story. For years I've played dnd and other rpg games and have wandered what would happen if I could have modern equipment to fight some of the monsters. Well this book answers that pretty well. I also love the world it is set in. There is conflict between nations, politics and monsters. This book has it all. I can not recommend it enough.

loved it! transports you to an amazing world. it feels like everything I've always thought if a human from today was magically transported to a fantasy realm. I felt like I was there in the story. cannot wait for the 2nd book

Finally

This is one of my favorite genre of books. I am usually disappointed by the lack of knowledge by authors and by the Hollywood imagery, but Kyrell Kendrick has either been there, done that or had a hell of a good consultant. great job capturing a soldiers perspective. I'd love to sit and have a couple beverages with SSG Holden.

Not worth the time or the credit

Audible wouldn’t let me return it because I fell asleep listening and they said I had listen to to much of the book. Oh and how I wanted to return this book. So being stuck with the book I thought I may as well listen to it. And it was as bad as I thought. Trying to make the grizzled old soldier into a 1 liner stand up comedian was a total fail. Then to use magic when ever there was a dead end to save the story was weak. Don’t buy this one.

one of the most enjoyable books in a long time

Outstanding book and narrator. I binged this book in a day. It was funny and very enjoyable with finally a smart MC. If you were in the military or like military books I do not know how you would not enjoy this book.

Can't bare to listen to anymore.

Interesting idea, but totally failing as a story with any interest. There is a limit to how much vulgarity I can take. The concept that a 'grunt' can go around a fantasy world and take everything down in seconds because he had a gun. I kept waiting for something to go wrong and there be a challenge to make it interesting, but after 3 hours of it, nope. There were some pretty sick elements which attempted to add character, but even that failed because the author glossed over the impact with a magically medicated catatonia.
Then there is the narrator, sorry but they accents given to different characters was just painful. I have only heard one worse who I only survived less than an hour.
There is a small plus, some of the one liners did manage to release a chuckle from me, but I couldn't remember any of the moments. So that tells you how significant those moments were.
