Haunted by her past and having already tracked down a predator on her own, Amaia is no typical rookie. And this is no ordinary student lecture at Quantico. A madman is holding Vitoria hostage, killing its citizens in brutal ways and staging the bodies. The city's only hope is a brilliant detective struggling to battle his own demons. Inspector Unai López de Ayala, known as "Kraken", is charged with investigating a series of ritualistic murders. The killings are eerily similar to ones that terrorized the citizens of Vitoria 20 years earlier. Publisher's Summary
The final audiobook in Dolores Redondo's atmospheric Baztan trilogy, featuring Inspector Amaia Salazar. With masterful storytelling and a detective to rival Sarah Lund, this Spanish best-selling series has taken Europe by storm.
In Pamplona, capital of Navarra, Amaia Salazar is called in to investigate the death of a baby girl. The baby has red marks on her face, indicating she has been murdered. According to the girl's grandmother, the father tried to run away with the body, uttering something about an offering. She also mentions the Inguma - an evil being of Basque mythology that kills people in their sleep.
The investigation takes Amaia and her team to the nearby valley of Baztan, where there have been an abnormally high number of similar cases - and some procedural irregularities. Meanwhile a murderer, Berasategui, is found dead in his cell from a drug-induced coma, which he can't have done without help.
Soon Amaia will have to face the true origin of the events that have ravaged the Baztan valley for years - even if an impressive snowstorm tries to bury the devastating truth.

Love it, but
Love the story, love the intensity, of the character. ..... But.......To me, Since the second and third book the magistrate became suspect immediately.....He was to obvious. to me what give away was the intensity the way he try to win her over. That was a disappointment.
The main character that was the inspector detective, is so intense, detail oriented, an excellent profiler. But what I fail to understand, how supposedly she fail to see him for what he really was....... her character was down play with the second and third book. She is strong, but at the same time weak. She profiles and analyzed, but failed to see him, it was obvious that something was really off with him...... Love a lot of things from the book, but this particular area of her books was a disappointment. There where other behavior , that didn't make sense neither..... too bad, this's could it been a lot better.

Good Story, Frustrating Lead Character
Overall, this was a good ending to the trilogy. I like the way the author tied all three stories together and I liked the subtlety of the supernatural elements, which helped make everything more believable.
Spoiler Alert
I must admit I didn't really care for the lead character. I'm all for a flawed character but I thought she seemed relatively unbothered by some of her own actions given how self-righteous she was with others. James was almost too underatanding and I just found Markena's obessession with Amaia to be annoying.
Also, towards the end, maybe she was blinded by infatuation, but it almost seemed too obvious who was behind it all and the fact that she kept believing that person's lies seems far fetched for a "star cop".

Cannot get enough!
After finally going through the North Face of the Heart, I decided to go through the trilogy again, and just like the first time, I could not wait to get back to the book during the day when I had to focus on work. I hope there is still more to come with the ending of a cliff hanger on this one. The writing and performance are superb; they bring back the joy of going through my first audio book series- Harry Potter, by Stephen Frye many years ago!

Mystery, crime, twists, and much more!
This is the third book in the Baztan Trilogy. I first encountered this story on Netflix where I watched the portrayal of the story through film. It intrigued me to understand the intricacies of the story better by listening to the books. I was not disappointed in either and I recommend this brilliant trilogy.
The third book follows the second by unwinding the truth about the crimes of the past and closing the loop on all the unanswered questions. It involves cults, murder, betrayal, and much more!

Exceptional
Outstanding trilogy, narrator, (and translation). Thank you team Redondo.
This book, 3rd in the trilogy, is much more than a conventional murder mystery. It covers Basque history and culture, a range of human emotions, and a plot that keeps you in suspense right up to the very end.
Well worth listening. (it should be noted that the narrator of the first volume was not as good with English as the narrator of the last two)

Different, in a very good way.
The trilogy is brilliant. A bit different to what I would normally listen too. I choose books on narrator rather than author these days, as a good narrator can make good and bad books worth listening too, whereas a good author can still be ruined by a bad narrator.
in this series of three books however, the author and narrator are well matched in the detective murder mystery with a twist.
I highly recommend this.
