Publisher's Summary

When COVID-19 struck the UK, the government advised the over-70s to "shield" while the country went into lockdown. One old man went sailing instead. Single-handed and self-isolated, retired journalist John Passmore used the pandemic to achieve an ambition that had eluded him for 60 years. For 3,629 miles, he disappeared into a world of perfect solitude, adventure, and adversity, arriving back 42 days later, short of water and with shredded sails, to find himself celebrated on national radio as the embodiment of everybody’s lockdown dream. This is his story. It is also a story for anyone who ever thought a dream was unattainable.

Inspirational!

The solo sail John did at 70+ years old was very inspirational. He proves that it’s never too late to get out there and just do it! Cheers

I did not want to hear the last two words:The End.

Inspiring, delightful “listen”. On the shelf now with Slocum, Christian, Moitessier, Lundy, Kretschmer and Melville and Philbrick, in good company and within easy reach to be re-read as they have all been-at least until my sailing adventure joins them in print…

Lovely Book

What a pleasure that was. Very well written, honest, simple and funny. I also picked up a few good ideas about what to do and not do when sailing.

A must for any budding or experienced adventurer

I truly enjoyed John’s book, such a wonderful and inspirational story or adventure and following one’s dreams. We can all allow life to get in our way and let our dreams slip away but when you have the courage to really go for it… you truly begin to live your life. Only then can you know what life is really about and see the beauty of this journey.

A rarity, honest and true

Lovely little insight to a childhood dream… Undiminished after a life lived and fully supported by his loved ones. A humble middle finger at the status quo and the mantra that you’re never to old!

Inspirational

I’ve just completed my own solo voyage, so spent some time digesting the contemporary biographies on the subject. John is a funny guy, someone you could have a beer with. This biography is particularly relevant because it’s not all about a boring transatlantic.

Feels like I paid to listen to an advert

The story concept is great but it was overshadowed toward the end by the authors teasers (numerous references to his blog content, little business and miracle cure. All which of course you can find out more about if you visit his blog). Toward the end I felt like I had been ina business meeting where the small talk was about sailing before getting down to the real reason of the book, that of hawking his wares. sadly, the narrator was in my view excellent.

Entertaining but a little light

I enjoyed listening to Mr Passmore's adventures and recollections. The narrator was great and fit the writing style perfectly.

The book was a little light and I felt some of the passages were filler. Some extremely questionable dietary advice was unwelcome - for example, it's stated as fact that modern food production does not contain much iron because horses don't plough fields and lost horse shoes would, in the past, provide this "missing" iron.

This is so far from correct I don't know where to start, but there is a whole chapter devoted to this sort of musing.

Still worth a listen, but take some with a pinch of salt.

Awful narration. Irritating, staccato delivery

Narrator sounds as though he has one lung and is incapable of a full breath. Awful delivery. unlistenable.

Loved this book

Both the book and the narrator I enjoyed immensely. John can tell a great story and the fact that he thinks differently from herd is very appealing. The fact that he was in his late 60s and went offshore is life affirming.

I love the matter-of-fact approach to John’s look and inspired myself to recognise that you’re never too old
