Publisher's Summary

Happily-ever-after turned upside down, inside out, and completely over the top! Christian is gaga for Princess Marigold. He's just a commoner, though, and no match for royalty. Heck, he lives in a cave with a troll! And now he's discovered another reason to put his love-soggy heart on ice: Queen Olympia is scheming to take over the kingdom, and she'll bump off Marigold to do it! Can Chris foil her diabolical plans?

Critic Reviews

"In a gratifying fantasy that contains elements of classic fairy tales, Ferris...breathes new life into archetypal characters by adding unexpected and often humorous dimensions to their personalities." ( Publishers Weekly)
"This complex, fast-paced plot, a mixture of fantasy, romance, comedy, and coming-of-age novel, succeeds because these characters are compelling, well developed, and sympathetic." ( School Library Journal)

Parent/Tween Listen Along Potential

I am a teacher, so I love YA/Children's Literature generally, but I truly enjoyed this just on it's own merits. It has so many funny fairytale references and phrases that younger kids might Not notice, but which are very entertaining for more advanced listeners.

A very "appropriate," as we say, book for both boys and girls ages 9-14 or so. Excellent strong, intelligent characters of different genders ( and species) .

Excellent narration (especially Ed the troll!) and audio production values. Listen and Live Audio has never let me down on production.

Really a fun listen-- I will definitely look for more by this author and narrator.

Pretty Good!!

This book was absolutely amazing! I actually got in trouble with my mom because I was reading Once Upon a Marigold instead of doing my chores and homework, but that just shows how captivating the story was! It was funny, and the plot line was great. I get mad sometimes because the stories are usually so predictable and, I am sorry to say, quite boring. But not this book! I guarantee anyone would love it, and I can't wait to read to next one. That being said, I do think there were a couple of plots that were left unfinished in parts of the book, but I think it was fantastic all the same. Thank you Jean Ferris!

Less YA and more Kids

This was a good book to listen to as long as you expect a cutesy story with lovable characters. Parents and kids can listen together. It is extremely easy to pick out the good guys and bad guys, and sweet to watch Marigold and Christian become better friends and sweet on each other. They start as "pen pals" but become just the encouragement the other needs to overcome the difficult Mother situation (Marigold) and the difficult Life Direction situation (Christian) deals with. Some of the characters are funny, and have entertaining accents. The Troll in particular has catchy phrases that some kids might not get because they are all intermingled: Bump on a log becomes Bump on a Stump, est. Not a gripping adult novel, but I would get it again. Fair warning though the end is expectedly cheesy :)

Thoroughly enjoyable

Just finished listening to this for my second time through, first time for my 8-year old son. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Narrated very well at a nice pace. Satisfying story. I liked the slightly fairytale world it was set in. It was also fun spotting Ed's muddled up idioms. My son has already started reading the sequel to himself, which we have in paperback!
