"But the thing is," said Horley, "they didn’t know each other at all. Never heard of each other. It wasn’t about the makers. Only about the works." On a dark winter's night in 1970, Horley and Grinstead huddle for warmth in the Senior Common Room of a college in Oxford. Conversation turns to the two impressive works of art that Horley has recently added to his collection....

One of the most highly acclaimed and best-selling authors of our time now gives us a book that charts the history of his own enchantment with story - from his own books to those of Blake, Milton, Dickens, and the Brothers Grimm, among others - and delves into the role of story in education, religion, and science. At once personal and wide-ranging, Daemon Voices is both a revelation of the writing mind and the methods of a great contemporary master and a fascinating exploration of storytelling itself.

Spring-Heeled Jack: The name evoked awe from both criminals and upstanding citizens alike. Some thought he was the devil, but he was actually the original superhero - leaping over the buildings of Victorian England with the help of springs in the heels of his shoes. The story begins as three young innocents escape their orphanage one dark and stormy night. As they make their way through the treacherous streets of London, danger lurks, for hiding in the shadows is Mack the Knife, the most villainous of villains.

The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ is the remarkable new piece of fiction from best-selling and famously atheistic author Philip Pullman. By challenging the events of the gospels, Pullman puts forward his own compelling and plausible version of the life of Jesus, and in so doing, does what all great books do: makes the reader ask questions.

Story
Philip Pullman garnered every accolade with the breathtaking His Dark Materials trilogy. Now he turns his storytelling gifts to one of the most famous of the Arabian Nights tales: Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp. Aladdin is a shiftless good-for-nothing boy until he unwittingly acquires a magic lamp inhabited by a genie - and the adventure that follows both makes his fortune and makes him a man. Pullman tells the tale with his trademark crisp writing and fast-paced action.

Story
Harry Potter lives in a world that is both magical and historical. Hogwarts pupils ride an old-fashioned steam train to school, notes are taken on parchment with quill pens, and Muggle legends come to life in the form of werewolves, witches, and magical spells. This book is the first to explore the real history in which Harry's world is rooted. Did you know that bezoars and mandrakes were fashionable luxury items for centuries? Find out how Europeans first developed the potions, spells, and charms taught at Hogwarts, from Avada Kedavra to love charms.

If you like His Dark Materials....
You should listen to this. It offers the same charm and delightful characterizations but has many of the same problems (mainly plot related, and in this case a bit dreary in the middle) as his other books. Worth it for me, as I love escaping into this universe.

Great story, voice actor OK
I was hoping to get the same voice actors as in the his dark materials trilogy, but alas, we can't always get what we want. I was hoping, at least, to get someone who actually knows how people from Texas actually speak to play Lee Scoresby, but they couldn't seem to get that either. I'm from Texas and his fake accent was so painful to my ears I almost turned it off. But I powered through. The writing is great, as expected from Philip Pullman.

Love His Dark Materials, this was OK
So, this was OK, but I admit I was disappointed at the end. I know it's a short story and I probably expected too much, but Lee S. isn't that interesting of a character to me, and his interactions with the women in the book were ... very... weird to me. Like we gt that he's a 'cowboy' but... no. And Lyra is just a mention at the end... and the story itself isn't terrible complicated and pretty predictable so it was just OK.

Nothing Particularly Remarkable
I suppose the story was enjoyable, but it was too short to develop any real characters, the plot felt contrived, and all in all I just wasn’t engrossed in it. The cast though was excellent and did an amazing job bringing an otherwise unremarkable story to life

In a full relisten of the whole series
While this was written after the main original trilogy, it’s set before the events of HDM and TBoD. And it’s every bit as good as they are. I have such fondness for these characters, and I will always love this reading of the novella.

Long Time HDM Fan, This Didn't Do It For Me
Nothing in particular stood out about this story and it's not memorable. I love Philip Pullman and his writing was as good as ever, but this fell flat for me.
