Publisher's Summary
Lady Philippa Marbury is...odd.
The brilliant, bespectacled daughter of a double marquess cares more for books than balls, for science than the season, and for laboratories than love. She's looking forward to marrying her simple fiancé and living out her days quietly with her dogs and her scientific experiments. But before that, Pippa has two weeks to experience all the rest - 14 days to research the exciting parts of life. It's not much time, and to do it right she needs a guide familiar with London's darker corners.
She needs...a Scoundrel.
She needs Cross, the clever, controlled partner in London's most exclusive gaming hell, with a carefully crafted reputation for wickedness. But reputations often hide the darkest secrets, and when the unconventional Pippa boldly propositions him, seeking science without emotion, she threatens all he works to protect. He is tempted to give Pippa precisely what she wants...but the scoundrel is more than he seems, and it will take every ounce of his willpower to resist giving the lady more than she ever imagined.

A slow burn
I really liked this story, even more than the fist book. It was a slow burn between Cross and Pippa and at times Inthought they would not end up together but their story was beautifully romantic and many times sexy without actual sex. The narrator as always does an amazing job with accents and the different male and female voices. She's the best at historical romances.

Pippa's thirst for knowledge leads her to Love
This book was way better than book 1. It definitely rescued this series for me.
Lady Philippa "Pippa" Marbury is the fourth daughter of the Marguess of Needham and Dolby. She doesn't believe in luck and she believes in scientific explanations for everything. Logic and Truth always wins out in Pippa's world.
She is engaged to the Lord Castleton but decided she wanted to do research on what is necessary to be a proper wife. Pippa deals with her nerves by gathering knowledge so she can feel prepared. She decides to go to the most notorious gaming hall in London, The Fallen Angel, because the owner Jasper Cross is notorious rake.
Pippa asks him to help her with her research on how to please her fiancee as a wife, and thus opening up a pandora's box with Cross.
Cross wasn't nobility but he seemed to be the only one in London who didn't find Pippa to be a nerd, geek or odd. He actually enjoyed engaging her in discussion but he couldn't offer her a life like she could have with Lord Castleton.
What I loved about this one was Pippa's honesty, her strength, her resolve and her curiosity about everything. She made being smart look fun, not odd. I chuckled at her a number of times. She said things people were afraid to say, she was a really good heroine.
Jasper finally met his match and she kept him honest. I liked this story much more than the Pippa's sister in book 1. I look forward to book 3.

A little preposterous, but it works...
Where does One Good Earl Deserves a Lover rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I have been enjoying this unique premise of a gentleman eschewing the Ton for personal reasons, and then the adventures they encounter as love brings them back, more or less, to the world they left. And it was time Cross stopped wallowing in the past!
What was one of the most memorable moments of One Good Earl Deserves a Lover?
Getting even at the rival "hell", by using the ex-fiance. What a stroke of genius, and the Earl sounded so innocent, every time he made a loud suggestion.
Which scene was your favorite?
When Phillippa Marbury firsts meets Cross in his office, and propositions him.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

DISAPPOINTED
Would you try another book from Sarah MacLean and/or Rosalyn Landor?
Yes, I am looking forward to the next book in this series and Rosalyn Landor is my favorite narrator.
If you’ve listened to books by Sarah MacLean before, how does this one compare?
This book was just not as good as the first book in the series. I think Ms. MacLean is a good writer and story teller, I just don't think she thought this book through before putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).
What does Rosalyn Landor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Rosalyn Landor brings the characters to life. I feel like I know the characters personally every time I listen to a book narrated by Ms. Landor.
Any additional comments?
Considering that this book is the second book in a series, it's missing the key key characters from the first book, Penelope and Borne. Also, considering that Penelope is Pippa's sister and Borne is a co-owner of The Angel, you would really think that they would have role in this book. However, Penelope has ONE conversation with Pippa and Borne is only mentioned. How can the author expect this story to go over well when Penelope and Borne have no interactions with Pippa and Cross? It just doesn't make sense.
I anxiously waited on this book for 6 months or more because I loved the first book so much and I'm so disappointed with this book. There were so many conversations between Pippa and Cross with him imagining what he would like to do with her and it just got old after a while. I believe that Pippa and Cross deserved a better story and Penelope and Borne should have had a role in this story.
Regardless, I plan on listening to this book again in a few months and maybe I will like it better.

Winner Winner Winner
Winner on every count. The ever amazing Sarah MacLean has created a beautiful love story. I love this series and can't wait for the next audiobook to come out. This series is about men who own an upper class gaming hell in London. Each one has a story. Book 1 was Bourne...excellent story. Book 2 One Good Earl was the best so far. I love Cross and Pippa. He's a very intelligent man and she a blue stocking. What a duo they make.
There are some very steamy scenes but one scene is so breath taking and the man never even touches her.
Usually, it's a man saving a woman. The writer has turned the tables on this one. What a heroine Lady Phillipa is too. I don't want to give anything away but she is awesome. She does over think things but she's adorable
This series is well worth the money. My favorite so far in the series. I'm thinking this is going to be my favorite period. I guess we'll see what comes of Temple, he's the next book.

How could these sisters be so scandeles?
I got this book 2-3 years ago. Since I just purchased book one I decided to go back and read the rest of the books in the series which I had in my library. The similarities in the two books were amazing. First of all neither in book one or book two did either sister seem to be under any tight leash as was customary for the times. They come and go to a gaming hell and have late night clandestine meetings and go around town with no chaperone and no one even talks about them being improper or even misses them enough to look for them? Let's also not forget that the men in both books see themselves as NOT worthy of the women and after EVERY kiss they gasp! Did I mention EVERY? Both heros did not want a marriage and resisted it to the end only to run after the heroine the last five minutes of the book and of course both sisters were more than happy to put up no resistance for all they were put through. Both stories had a man who did the hero wrong and at the end each villain talked about how they should have been grateful for the experience as it was that which propelled them to become so successful. And that's not where all the similarities end. God save me from all the mind babble that goes on in both books. In the middle of a scene Sarah MacLean goes off in the character's head and leaves the story choppy and non continuous. And what was that about the eroticisim of crocked fingers? huh? I did not find the story nearly as exciting as the teaser at the end of book one. There were, however, some very nice passionate scenes in this book. Well now you know it.

Worth more than 5 Stars!
One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean (Audio Edition)
Narrated by Rosalyn Landor
The Rules of Scoundrels #2
This book is worth far more than 5 stars!!!! It was magnificent! The longing/wanting/need was conveyed to perfection! Someone mentioned breathlessness and yes!! That too!!! I LOVED the characters honesty. Pippa was straightforward and honest throughout the book and I think it was one of the things that made me love every second of this story! Cross was the perfect match for her. He is going into my category of "great leading male" This book is now on my "favourites shelf" and as I had originally bought this series for the next book... I am now unsure of how Ms. MacLean is going to top this!
Loved the narrator. She did a fantastic job as always!

Pretty terrible book
I've read about 80% of this book but it's enough to do a review. I've never heard so much endless and useless conversation, ridiculous introspection and lack of actual story. The quality of the writing is poor, the story convoluted. I'm now listening to a love scene during which the heroine is naming the bones of the hero's arm in Latin.
I do not understand the mostly positive reviews.

Cute, but predictable
But that’s what you want from a romance novel right?
This book was pretty good, but two aspects of the authors writing caught my attention and took me out of the story . EVERYONES mouth at one point “kicked up at one corner” and brows were always “snapping together”. Just odd turns of phrase.
And one characters eyes turned from brown to blue and back again, but ah well.
