Winner, Earphones Award 2020

Five long-missing children are about to be returned.

It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air....

Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one.

All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

Speculation grows that the mysterious abductor is enacting a cruel revenge plot due to a murderer that Kate put in jail years before.

Kate isn't sure what to believe. But one thing is certain - she's about to begin the battle of her life. When the children were first stolen, she was prevented from investigating the case.

But now, Kate will be relentless in uncovering the identity of the abductor and discovering what happened to Ivy.

Amazing book and amazing narration!

I absolutely loved this book! It was so good that I couldn't stop listening to it. I found myself doing chores just so I had an excuse to listen to it. It really kept you guessing all the way up until the end. This was my 1st book by this author and I'm now looking forward to reading the rest of her novels. This is a must read!

On of the BEST WRITTEN mysteries...

I’ve read in a long time. Amazingly well crafted, intriguing, outlined and performed. I love a good mystery and will sometimes even settle for a cheesy one to help with a fix. This one however is one of the best, most realistic and well written ones I’ve ever read. Highly recommended!

Contrived and Manipulative

The lead character was well developed and had potential. Yet it strains credulity that a kidnapping of so many children was solved not by the hundreds of experts but rather because the main protagonist uncovered a clue that is so obvious, a rookie detective could have found it.

The “secret” generating an “apology” at the end was either a manipulative hook for the next book or an irritating loose end. Either option is just sloppy writing. I avoid series and checked that it was stand-alone so the lead-in was irritating in the extreme.

Caroline Lee was spectacular as always. Well, except that the accent for the psychiatrist was a bit of a cartoon. But hey, no one’s perfect...

So many showers

I enjoyed this book. The story was longer than it needed to be but still good. The narration was good but one thing that puzzled me was how the detective had to shower so much and how she had the time to do so. I will go on to the next book in the series.

Ridiculous

Narrator sounds like an Australian attempting an American who's trying to do an Australian accent. The story felt like it was made up as they went along. The ending was ridiculous.

Drawn out way too much

This story lost me with hours left to go. The ending is really bad IMO so I do not recommend this book at all.

51/2 *

An excellent, atmospheric book, beautifully written with well developed, likeable characters. It’s a nice change that the detective is in her sixties.

And I’ve yet to listen to Caroline Lee’s narration and be disappointed. She could make a phone book interesting but this book was was no phone book, it was wonderful material for her to work with.

Book of parts

First half was great 5*, but second half dragged and needed to be condensed, found myself rolling my eyes so much, A great book totally spoiled by too much unwanted detail. Hated the detective's daughter, wanted to give her a good slap for her silliness.
Loved the narration, Caroline Lee as ever, is brilliant, but even she couldn't rescue the direness of the second half.

Hooked from the opening chapter

Excellent story didn’t want it to end a real mystery. Luckily a second book is now available. The narrator Caroline Lee made it for me, she is so expressive, she makes the characters come alive.

Accents are not the readers strong point!

The story was interesting enough to keep me on board till the end but it was a rough slog whenever the reader had to do one of the many accents within the book. It was quite off putting, especially her attempt at an American accent. The story was fairly predictable and the ending a bit lack lustre. Over all not horrible but wouldn’t recommend.

Really good crime mystery.

I enjoyed this page turning mystery (actually a couple of mysteries) involving an older female detective and her family. As always excellent narration from Caroline Lee and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Totally different....

I have read so many mysteries - crime novels and love to come across a new local (Australian) author. I've heard many of Caroline Lee's readings and have always enjoyed them. This one is totally different. A different subject matter, a truly impossible crime to solve - until it seems to solve itself. I was hooked from start to finish. Well done!

Great Story and performance

Great story where you can't guess the ending or who were the kidnappers.
The narrator was excellent (a bit unsure if the accents were overkill), all the towns were correctly pronounced and overall it was a great listen. I will be listening to the next from this author and I sincerely hope its as good as this one.
