Publisher's Summary

An instant New York Times best seller!

“Rapinoe's 'signature pose' from the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup is synonymous to the feeling we got when finishing this book: heart full, arms wide and ready to take up space in this world.” (USA Today)

Megan Rapinoe, Olympic gold medalist and two-time Women's World Cup champion, reveals for the first time her life both on and off the field. Guided by her personal journey into social justice, brimming with humor, humanity, and joy, she urges all of us to ask ourselves, What will you do with your one life?

Only four years old when she kicked her first soccer ball, Megan Rapinoe developed a love - and clear talent - for the game at a young age. But it was her parents who taught her that winning was much less important than how she lived her life. From childhood on, Rapinoe always did what she could to stand up for what was right - even if it meant going up against people who disagreed.

In One Life, Megan Rapinoe invites readers on a remarkable journey, looking back on both her victories and her failures, and pulls back the curtain on events we know only from the headlines. After the 2011 World Cup, discouraged by how few athletes were open about their sexuality, Rapinoe decided to come out publicly as gay and use her platform to advocate for marriage equality. Recognizing the power she had to bring attention to critical issues, in 2016 she took a knee during the national anthem in solidarity with former NFL player Colin Kaepernick to protest racial injustice and police brutality - the first high-profile white athlete to do so. The backlash was immediate, but it couldn’t compare to the overwhelming support. Rapinoe became a force of change.

Here for the first time, Rapinoe reflects upon some of the most pivotal moments in her life and career - from her realization in college that she was gay, through the disputes with soccer coaches and officials over her decision to kneel, to the first time she met her now-fiancé WNBA champion Sue Bird, and up through suing the US Soccer Federation over gender discrimination and equal pay. Throughout, Rapinoe makes clear the obligation we all have to speak up, and the impact each of us can have on our communities. Deeply personal and inspiring, One Life reveals that real, concrete change lies within all of us, and asks: If we all have the same resource - this one precious life, made up of the decisions we make every day - what are you going to do?

"One Life makes it clear that Rapinoe’s greatest accomplishments may ultimately come away from the soccer pitch. She’s a new kind of American hero." (San Francisco Chronicle)

Another entitled athlete

I enjoy memoirs and reading about how individuals overcame adversity and anticipated that this memoir would be similar. I was wrong. Ms RApinoe never suffered any adversity but wants to complain and lecture about perceived injustices to other people. She admittedly made 500,000 in 2018 from playing soccer but did she give any of that money to the described “ victims “ or to promote pay equity. NO she bought a Rolex and stated “ I’m not apologizing for it “. Put your money where your mouth is. Stop lecturing complaining and kneeling This book was a gratuitous money grab. Don’t waste your time

Incredible Reading w/ Humor

Why not hear it from the author herself? Megan Rapinoe goes through life, struggles, and the beautiful game. However, she combats so much more with her privilege and attacks injustices in our world. From the humor and cursing to the power and insightfulness of her voice, it's worth the listen too. Just amazing all around. Highly recommend!

Thank you Megan

I'm 3/4 through and already writing a review. Thank you for telling your story. I'm one of the fortunate ones who benefited from what you've done with your life. You coming out, and now telling your story has enabled me to have to courage to live mine. I listen to and from the way to work. I'm finding myself anxious to get back to my car and hear the next part. Thank you for being brave enough to be you. Hearing it in your own voice has made it personal.

Incredible figure, decent book

I could not stop listening to this book, and it's not because it was superbly written. Megan uses simple, straightforward language--not that the book isn't informative and well-researched-- to explain her beliefs and personality, and I loved getting to know her mind and her journey to where she is now. I also commend her acknowledgement of her privilege as a white female; it's practically a thesis of the book. I have even more respect for her now and recommend the book for those looking to understand her better.

Absolutely Worth The Listen

I preordered the minute I heard that Megan would be publishing this book. Speaking from all aspects of her life both professional and personal it shows the strong values and views she shares for not only herself but for the rights of others. There was already respect for you Megan Rapinoe but it increased tenfold after listening to your book. Thank you for being inspiration. 💚🇯🇲

Hilarious, powerful, inspiring!

You don’t need to be a soccer fan to find joy in Megan Rapinoe’s fierce wit, passion for social change, and her keen view of the world (though you ought to be a soccer fan anyway!) I loved listening to her voice come through the speakers and to hear about such powerful moments in her life. Well written and a pleasure to read.

Both inspirational and hypocritical

Writing as a humourless, moaning Brit, who *gets* the difference between sarcasm and irony (you'll have to listen to understand) I enjoyed much of this well narrated audiobook. It is interesting to hear Megan Rapinoe's take on the world, however, I find the discrepancies in what Rapinoe says worrying and those between what she says and what she does quite disturbing.

While Rapinoe is admirable for using her platform to support equal rights for black people, gay people and women, her muddled thinking does not include any analysis of the system of neoliberal capitalism which has such a vice-like grip on 'well meaning' white, liberal Americans, herself included. It is global neoliberal capitalism, underpinned by divisive racism, homophobia, sexism, disabilism & etc, which has brought the USA the wealth and power enjoyed by most white Americans, including Rapinoe, today. While Rapinoe partly acknowledges this and empathises with the victims of state violence she does not seem to understand that there are many other victims of global neoliberal capitalism. Those also deserving to be empathised with are usually non-white people, both inside and outside her country, who live on or below subsistence level. People who are just as much victims, people whose worlds have been destroyed by the economic systems perpetuated by a white supremacy of European and American men.

Rapinoe needs to understand a larger, wider truth - that all inequality is part of a system of power whereby about 1% of the global population (mainly white men) have enough wealth and power between them to control the whole world - divide and rule as the old British Empire edict went. So, when Rapino, exhorts people, many of whom have lost their jobs, businesses, and homes in the pandemic, to do what they can to help their communities, it does not sit well with actions such as 'awarding' herself a gold Rolex simply because women are not supposed to do such things. Through this and other attitudes and actions Rapinoe continues to perpetuate the racist supporting values of neoliberal capitalism which she fails to examine.

My feeling is that much more political, economic and personal awareness is needed by Rapinoe, and probably most of the rest of us too, to bring about the societal changes she desires. It is for these reasons there is a significant degree of hypocrisy in this work.

An excellent book

An excellent story if little too short for my liking! I have so much admiration for The author as both a player and as someone who has taken the risks she has to use her position to champion equal rights even at detriment to her own career.
A very good listen so much so I couldn't turn it off! I usually listen to an audiobook whilst walking but this was so good i spent the rest of the day listening to it.
The author is top of my list for someone I'd invite to dinner or just attend somewhere to hear her speak

Beyond a book

From the reviews I read i knew this would be good but there is something special about this story that is so honest and inspiring. It has highlighted that what I am currently doing is not enough and that to do more isn't actually as hard as everyone makes it seem. Time to learn, grow and educate. Thanks for the motivation!
