Publisher's Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner, a chilling thriller about a young man gone missing in the wilderness of Wyoming...and the secrets uncovered by the desperate effort to find him

Timothy O’Day knew the woods. Yet when he disappeared on the first night of a bachelor party camping trip with his best friends in the world, he didn’t leave a trace. What he did leave behind were two heartbroken parents, a crew of guilt-ridden groomsmen, and a pile of clues that don’t add up.

Frankie Elkin doesn’t know the woods, but she knows how to find people. So when she reads that Timothy’s father is organizing one last search, she heads to Wyoming. Despite the rescue team’s reluctance, she joins them. But as they hike into the mountains, it becomes clear that there’s something dangerous at work in the woods...or someone who is willing to do anything to stop them from going any further.

Running out of time and up against the worst man and nature have to offer, Frankie and the search party will discover what evil awaits those who go one step too far...

Critic Reviews

“Narrator Hillary Huber uses perfect pacing and emphasis as bestselling thriller writer Gardner creates the second in a series featuring missing person specialist Frankie Elkin. Huber's narration matches this audiobook's intensity as Frankie searches for a young man who has gone missing after a wild bachelor party in a national forest. Huber employs shifts in tone and allows tension to creep into her delivery as the search reaches its dramatic climax. Gardner creates fully realized characters, flawlessly performed by Huber. She makes the father's desperation and fears palpable, allowing listeners to experience every parent's nightmare and the utmost evil patiently waiting in the woods.”AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner

“Huber's smoky voice and cynical reading helps build suspense. Narrated in first person, Frankie's thoughts and conversations are clearly differentiated. Other characters are well developed vocally, making each easy to identify. Excellent use of pace changes and pauses build the drama of the story, with energy and intensity. Fear and horror are palpable in Huber's voice, making this an exciting and compelling listen.”Library Journal

“It’s not often that a thriller so deeply casts us into the darkness of both nature and the human heart…Terrifying, primal, and very, very tense. Read it with your heart in your throat—but read it.”Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Excellent Sequel!!!!

This book was such a pleasant surprise! I wasn’t expecting a new Lisa Gardner book so I’m very happy now!
I agree with Wayne (Matthews, NC), this book may very well be better than the first.
When a group of young men go camping and one disappears they all return every year to search for him. Along with the man’s father, a guide and a woman with a cadaver dog. This year Frankie Elkin joined them. Although initially unwanted what she discovered made her the most valuable of all. Frankie learns of lies, betrayal, town secrets and finally murder.
Soundly written mystery.
Hilary Huber does an outstanding job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Wow! Just Wow.

I’ve read every book by Lisa Gardner. She never fails to write a novel that has me thinking about it long after I’ve finished. This is the first of her books that I’ve listened to instead of reading. The narrator was awesome! This book was amazing! My only disappointment is knowing that I’ve got about another year until I get to read/listen to another one of her books. I’m definitely loving Frankie and look forward to more of her.

Great story!

Book 2 in Lisa Gardner's Frankie Elkin series is even better than Before She Disappeared. One Step Too Far is both an excellent mystery and an uplifting story. Highly recommended!

Excellent!

Compelling character and compelling story. I could not stop listening. The protagonist was a memorable character from the first book and she is just as memorable in this story. Highly recommend.

Tedious

This book was so slow. In order to save myself from complete boredom, I set the speed to 2x.

Meh

The story itself was ok but the dialogue between characters was unnatural. The author kept using it to over-explain things. Too often she tried to share knowledge about survival skills/camping/etc that did nothing to further the plot or character development. And the main character was written with a somewhat obnoxious mix of capability and vulnerability. One minute unbelievably ignorant about a situation but then instant light bulb and near expert level of explanation. The near hero worship and adoration of her by a group of what were strangers merely 72 hours earlier at the end was odd. I could go on but I think most will get the point.

I didn’t care for the narrator either. Her attempts to change her voice among the various male characters was overdone, particularly for “Bob” who constantly sounds like someone with a plugged up nose or cold. I might have liked the story better had I read it or someone else narrated, the performance of this audiobook only accentuated how clunky everything could be at times.
