Story
They call her the Wilder Queen. It’s a title given to Kate Brighton for her role in the war between the wilder rebellion and the Rimish empire. It’s a title that was hard earned: Kate may have saved her people, but many were lost in the conflict, immortalized in the tattoos of fire that grace her arms. And it’s a title that Kate never wanted. The rebellion may have made a home for themselves in a country that wants to cast them out, but the peace will never be safe while Edwin, the illegitimate king of Rime, sits upon its throne. And for that, the Wilder Queen must keep hers.

The upheaval in my life began the moment a prince stumbled into my house and asked me to read his fortune. Any other night, I might have made an excuse to get him to leave, but this was no normal visit. My fingers prickled to touch him. So, I granted his request by handing him a single wishbone. When he snapped it, the wish...bled. Hearing me suck in a shocked breath, he asked what it meant. Such an ominous omen could only mean one thing: His death was imminent. Fate revealed that he wouldn’t die of natural causes. Someone wanted him dead.

Publisher's Summary
Acclaimed author Mindee Arnett thrusts listeners into a beautiful, dangerous, and magical world in this stunningly epic and romantic fantasy for fans of Leigh Bardugo and Sarah Raasch.
They call her Traitor Kate. It’s a title Kate Brighton inherited from her father after he tried to assassinate the high king of Rime.
Cast out of the nobility, Kate now works for the royal courier service. Only the most skilled ride for the Relay and only the fastest survive, for when night falls, the drakes - deadly flightless dragons - come out to hunt. Fortunately, Kate has a secret edge: She is a wilder, born with forbidden magic that allows her to influence the minds of animals.
And it’s this magic that leads her to a caravan massacred by drakes in broad daylight - the only survivor Corwin Tormaine, the son of the king. Her first love, the boy she swore to forget after he condemned her father to death.
With their paths once more entangled, Kate and Corwin must put the past behind them to face this new threat and an even darker menace stirring in the kingdom.
Critic Reviews
"At once fresh, at once classic, Onyx and Ivory is a page-turning blend of monsters, magic, and romance." (Susan Dennard, New York Times best-selling author of Truthwitch)

This seven-book fantasy series features a fan favorite strong female lead in 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien, and Maas’s writing has been described as "scary good." Not the best book I've ever read but it's far from the worst. Its enjoyable, fun and fast paced. The story is enjoyable enough to anticipate the next installment but not so great that I will lay awake wondering about what happens next.

okay story
It's a predictable story with an ordinary setup, but it's not boring. At least there's not a love triangle. It's also the first in a series and doesn't resolve much, which I find endlessly frustrating.

I'm Jaded
I think I’m getting jaded on YA. Nothing really seems to grab me lately. It all feels the same. And, it really is. Magic outlawed, those with magic are in hiding, a witch hunt, a rebellion, the MC hides her skill from the one she loves, the MC is found out.......blah blah blah. Been there, done that, so many times. I found the writing to be good, not great. But what was really lacking for me was strong character development. I need to feel something for the characters in order for me to care about the story, not the other way around. And the story is rather simple, not a lot of complex world building going on. So doubtful I’ll be reading the next book. I really did want to like this too. But the narrator did a great job with the story.

Fantastic.
I am very picky about what books I like. I loved this book. The narrator is one of my favorites, which certainly factored into my decision to listen to this book, but the story itself was wonderful by itself. The differing viewpoints of Kate and Corwin made for a more detailed experience of the world and showed both sides of a very complicated story.
My favorite part, however, is how Kate and Corwin communicated with one another. There were no miscommunications that led to easily resolvable conflicts, like what you see in so many YA books, and the fact that they are willing to be honest with one another is so, so refreshing. And the way Corwin respects Kate and her decisions- it is so hard to find relationships like this anymore. I truly appreciated their dynamic.
I am more than looking forward to the sequel.

not great.
feels like it was written by a sixteen year old. characters were rather "eh" and didn't examine their motivations., for a book driven by relationships (not just your flagship romance ones, we're talking broader, friendships, parent child etc) one would have liked to see significantly more development. as it was, the narrative was flat with the subject matter was similarly 2 dimensional.

ehh
it's an okay story but it lacked any real interesting plot, there isn't much complexity but it's an ok YA. just not what I was expecting. The biggest saving Grace for me was Khristine Have, she's a masterful narrator who brings much more to the characters than I know I'd have had if I read it on my own.

Fairly Predictable but Good Story
I enjoy the concept of this world and characters the author built. The narrator also does a splendid job of reading this. The only slight downside is that most of the is books plot was predictable, even to me from fairly early on in the book. Which is kinda disappointing.
Overall I'd recommend this if this book is your thing, like it is mine, but I wouldn't recommend it to people highly bothered by a predictable plot.

I could have skipped chapters 5 to 30....
I could have skipped chapters 5 to 30 and still get the entire story. This wasn’t my thing. The entire book felt as if I read this before somewhere. Maybe similar to the bird and the sword, except, I like the bird & sword. This book was a miss for me. I don’t mind a long book if the background matters but for me this just didn’t match up. I will not be reading the sequels. On the plus the narrator was good.

waste of a credit
I couldn’t get past the first 30 minutes. maybe its meant for younger people (im 21) but it’s annoying and leaves me asking why this main character is so significant.
(spoilers from here down)
first off, i wanna know why the fact that her father tried to kill the king is such a big deal. i feel like murder attempts on a king are common. all kings have enemies. To me it’d make more sense if they did a public execution and left it at that. but literally a anniversary announcement for the day kate’s dad’s attempt at murder?? To me he seems too irrelevant. And either kate would be wanted by the crown to be murdered and used as an example of what happens when you defile the king. like “if you try to take the kings life he will not only take the life of you but you family as well”. Also kate is irrelevant too. like why does it make her a traitor too?? Also i dont understand why wilder magic is so bad. in a world of magic, if controlling animals is the worst a person can do (compared to necromancy or more destructive/ powerful abilities) then this is just a underwhelming world. why is it punishable by death. it makes 0 sense. ALSO it makes no sense why they would be like “protect the horse like its your life, ITS YOUR FIRST PRIORITY” like uhhh wouldnt protecting the MAIL that she delivers be more important??? also making pip run to the gate was protecting them BOTH from the dragon things?? so how is it bad??? the characters are over dramatic and not relatable, half the time someone says something or does something i ask myself “who reacts that way??”. the world building and writing style is nice and the performance is top notch but the story and characters are annoying

More Than Pleasantly Surprised
I actually really enjoyed this audiobook.
It was refreshing, most YA books that involve any kind of fantasy are all very samey-samey now, all seem to include fae and magic and everyone is immortal and theres always an evil queen that has a soul aim to destroy the whole world somewhere etc but this book wasn't exactly like that.
This is more 'real life', yeah, some people have magic but it's not the 'i am magic and i can do anything i want' kind that makes you roll your eyes when the main character can do everything they want no matter how outlandish or ridiculous just to fit round a weird storyline, it has its limits and the rest of the world around them is relatively realistic. All humans - aka not jam packed with fairies or goblins or monsters or whatever, they live in houses and ride horses and have standard human weapons etc. Basically apart from the odd fantasy bits for excitement, I found this more relatable in some ways than some YA books out there.
The narrator is great, really engaging and sounds enthusiastic. I'd have given the story 4.5 stars if i could, as the beginning is slow to start, but as this is going to be a series, it's understandable that it needs to be set up properly.
The review below said it was good but they wouldn't listen to any more in the series however I am interested to see what happens next. Has good potential. Would recommend.

Dreadful performance
I don't know whether I would have liked the tale. It seemed too much of a coming-of-age story for my liking, but the narator is the killer. She reads with a false sense of drama and without sympathy to the characters. Dreadful. Book returned and refunded.

A showstopper
Some books are pure magic and this is one such book. This audiobook was riveting from start to finish as the listener joins the complex, multi-dimensional characters as they grow and blossom through the book. It is a story of resilience, love and listening to the still, small voice within you. Mindee Arnett has created a beautiful start of a series, well-deserving of a sequel. This is fantasy at its best.
Another excellent performance by Khristine Hvam. She brings so much soul to the characters. One of the best narrators of our time.

I went into this not expecting much as I have recently gone off YA, this came with a Fairyloot box so I thought I'd better see what it is like. It was a lot better than I expected. I loved the different story lines and I loved Kate. I don't think I will carry on with the series though. Also I think the narrator did a very good job.

Loved it!
Absolutely love this book i have no regrets buying it and I cant wait to listen to the 2nd book. I think this is a very original storyline and very different to all the others in the same genre. I enjoyed the main character I love listening about independent women and she was a Very likeable but still managed to be strong and capable. The narrator has a lovely, clear and easy to listen to voice.

Predictable
This was a pleasant enough listen about a girl (Traitor Kate) who is outcast after her father supposedly tries to assassinate the King. The King's second son is Corwin, who has loved Kate since forever. Their paths cross some three years later and they will have to put their past behind them to deal with the threat now emerging.
Although this was an easy to listen to, interesting story, it was very predictable and to hold one's attention, there has to be some mystery and this is where it fell down, unfortunately; so I doubt I will follow on with book 2. Also, I could not warm to the narrator.

anticlimactic
the story had a promising beginning, but as the it go on, the motives of the characters and 'the big reveal' for what kates father did what he did, it was a let down to say the least. and the final boss reveal? who the heck even is that?!
the voice actor did an excellent job non the less, the magic and world building too is great but its the back and forward relationship with the two protagonist that made me struggle to finish it. its somewhat irritating to be honest, I don't think I'd be purchasing the sequel

Great start to the series
Eagerly await book 2.
Mispronunciation always lets down an audio book and this is no exception, but thankfully it doesn’t happen often enough to irritate.
Accents and tonal changes between characters is fairly consistent.
Solid performance.
