For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Story
The isolated, sleepy little village of Timber Falls—built on the bend of a swift mountain river—swells during the summer months as tourists flock to town to run the river, lured there by the Class IV and Class V rapids. A gruesome murder of a college student—a river rat—brings the FBI to town. Lynn Carter, a disgraced LAPD detective, was offered an out—a position on a team of unorthodox FBI agents. When her commander sent her to Timber Falls—a town by only the stretch of the imagination—she had no idea she would find her peace there. No idea she might find love.

Publisher's Summary
Fallon Foster serves up more than the most potent drinks at Murphy’s Law, the local pub in Whiskey Springs, Vermont. Fallon is the keeper of the town’s secrets. She’s heard tales of broken hearts, torrid affairs, closet cases, and the dreams of hopeful romantics. With a sensitive ear and a warm bed, Fallon is a legend in her small town. One thing still eludes her - love.
Happily married, a new baby, and a burgeoning career, Riley Main’s life was on course. One drunk driver turned her world upside down. A widow before the age of 30, Riley’s life has fallen out of balance. A gentle suggestion from her husband’s grandmother convinces Riley to embark on a journey across the country. With her two-year-old son, Owen, Riley makes her way from sunny San Diego to the chilly little Vermont town of Whiskey Springs. A blown fuel pump in the middle of a snow storm puts Riley on a collision course with a charming pub owner named Fallon Foster. Nothing will be the same again for anyone.
Rich with a colorful cast of characters that will make you laugh and cry, Open Tab is a new kind of romantic adventure from best-selling, lesbian fiction author JA Armstrong. Welcome to Whiskey Springs.

Good plot premise, poor execution for this genre
**Spoilers**
I liked the premise of this plot, but have a problem with two things: the story arc is incomplete, leaving the reader hanging and obviously prepping for a second book; and storyline is goes major off-course for a romance.
Mysteries and romances do have a formula their readers expect when they purchase from those genres. The mystery must be resolved by the end of the book (at least the mystery primary to the plot), and romances should have a complete arc where the two main characters must finally get together for a happily-ever-after.
This author had good character development and is a decent writer (or had a great editor). I cared about them by the end of the book -- well the bar owner, at least. But all the love scenes are between one of the main characters and the married woman with whom she's having an affair. A lot is said about how much they love each other...way more than the two supposed main characters who never get past that "I'm attracted and I enjoy spending time with her. but she's straight."
In short, this is half a book. Or, did the narrator just quit reading?

You will love Whiskey Springs!!
I was never a fan of audio books because at times it is hard to figure out which character is speaking. In Open Tab, Jill Smith does a wonderful job of depicting each character with their individual traits and it was a joy to listen to her narration. You never doubt which character you are listening to. Open Tab is the first book in the new series about Whiskey Springs by A J Armstrong. Whiskey Springs is a small town that sits in Vermont with a cast of characters you will want to learn about. I love books about lesbian families with children and this series is all about families. I read the book and then couldn’t wait to listened to this audio version of Open Tab which brought Murphy’s Law, Fallen, Riley, Andi, and all their family and friends to life. This is a great series and I look forward to reading and listening to more episodes. So close your eyes, sit back, and let Jill take you to Vermont for an afternoon in Whiskey Springs.

Amazing & funny 😍
This is a really amazingly beautiful & funny book. The narrator made it ultimately beautiful by adding life to the characters.

I first read Open Tab and had a pretty good picture of the characters. Jill Smith was spot on with her capture of all the characters! Anyone who is a fan of JA Armstrong or Nancy Ann Healy will love this book. It’s set In Vermont which is only a few states away and I wish I’d lived in a small town. Started well, but major let down
So....the good. Great characters, and I don't say that lightly. Nice set up with intelligent complications and very refreshing shades of grey point of view on relationships instead of the overly simplistic black and white that can be too common in this genre.
The bad. Far, far, far too much ink bled sharing what everyone and their uncle thinks of what a relationship between the two heroines could mean/be like and very little spent on scenes of them interacting showing us that they have a spark. Because of this, it really bogged down about a third of the way in and never completely recovered.
Now, if this was all there was in the bad category, I'd probably chalk it up to a first novel problem and risk the next book. I want wlw fiction authors to succeed, and we all know what we see in publication is people developing as authors. So yeah, I would have gone onto the next if it wasn't for....
The Very Bad. The book ended before there was any resolution. As if it were planned to be the first third of a trilogy, or somesuch. Or an installment into a serial. That's fine if it's a podcast series, or a webzine installment piece, but this is marketed as a book. The main plot question should be resolved before 'The End.' I feel quite let down as a reader, to be left with just half a story.
I really enjoyed Jill Smith's performance. I hope to hear more books read by her.

Wonderful
I must admit I am a fan of J.A. Armstrong The Whiskey Springs series is about the budding and growing relationship between Fallon Foster and Riley Main with 2-year-old son Owen. It takes in far more than that. I liked the relationships with the town's people I met along the way. At times it was a bit of a task keeping it all on track but it worked and the story is wonderful J.A. has a way of helping me love the Main and supporting characters and I feel warm and I miss them the second I finish the last page. In this case, it was not the last page it was the words I hope you enjoyed this book. The narration was great. Enjoy the book.

Jill smith has made it an absolute pleasure to hear from start to finish. No faults!

Just not quite right
A story which doesn’t quite work saved by excellent narration.
Don’t misunderstand it’s a good story but it relied too heavily on backgrounding facts and emotions from the narrator rather that allowing the reader to “know” the characters through their interactions.
