Surprisingly good.

There were a couple trips where I cringed...such as, "first time I craved a drink" when the protagonist had mentioned he craved a drink before...but all in all, very well done. Subtle. I downloaded this because it was free and I usually use free included with my membership to listen to while I am working. I actually had to stop this a few times and rewind because I wanted to hear the last plot twist unlike most of the freebies which you can pick back up just about anywhere like a bad soap opera. Had to rewind the ending a few times...won't say more. I might spend a credit on this author's other books. It's a good read.

Traumatized

Sorry to be negative but I found so many parts of this to be disturbing, vile, upsetting and nightmare inducing. I didn’t even finish it even though I wanted to know what happened. But I could not take the disgusting grossness of much of it. Blessings to the author and apologies for my honesty.

Loved hearing Joshua Jackson

Interesting story concept. I was drawn to this book because of Joshua Jackson. I hope he chooses to do more narrating. I will give this author another read.

Simply Perfect

I ended up listening to this book while doing a cross country drive during the pandemic. I was excited to know that Joshua Jackson was reading a book because I've always found his voice soothing but it turns out he's also an excellent storyteller, now one of my absolute favorites. the story itself was so different and exciting and strange I just loved it. there was an edge to it, quite literally I would have seen myself staying up all night to read this if I had the book in hand. I give everything 5 out of 5 even though this isn't even in my normal genre of reading.

Well worth a listen.

Mr. Pyper has crafted a solid supernatural mystery. Full of depth, and nuance. What I enjoyed most was the Pyper's exploration of the effects of "the gift" on the recipient. Although the tone was different, it reminded me of "Odd Thomas". Joshua Jackson gave a respectable reading, though at times I had to rewind to be sure who had said what. But better that than suffering through the pain of falsetto female voices!

Joshua Jackson brought an ok story to life!

The reading of this story was incredible! The inflection and pauses, voices, all perfect and created a compelling and intriguing listening experience. You felt the story come alive because of the reading of it so intuitive. The story was ok, not bad but just ok, lots of plot holes, and cringe worthy lines. But Joshua Jackson took an ok story and made it a can't stop listen. Disappointed it's over and hope Joshua Jackson decides to breath life into many more stories in the future.

The story was consistently engaging and the narrator’s skill set complemented the intense subject matter. What a wild ride! The conclusion did not disappoint. Thank you!

a bit bland

I didn't like it and struggled to finish it. the idea is brilliant and something I'd normally enjoy but it was just so drawn out and dull. the characters were boring and kept sitting around talking rubbish instead of trying to find a child buried alive?!? there was no sense of urgency or tension, but this may have (in part) been due to the incredibly robotic and monotone narrator. I've never lost focus on an audio book before, but my mind wandered all over the place with this! I'm so glad I didn't pay for it as it's included in the plus catalogue.

perfect casting

Interesting supernatural crime thriller. Joshua Jackson perfectly cast as protagonist, though maybe not as skilled at bringing the rest of the characters to light as some of the more regular narrators but the story is really a one man show anyway.

Not my usual thing but enjoyable

I expected this to be a detective story with a psychic twist, it turned out to be more of a mixture than that. I normally like books grounded in reality, but this was well written and the story carried me along. There are some clever twists, an unexpected ending, and it’s a book that leaves you thinking

Boring

I liked the inital premise so thought I'd give it a go as it was included in Audible Plus.

The first half was ok but the last half was incredibly dull. It was much too long and drawn out. I had to listen on 1.6 just to get through it! I can't recommend this. Would've been better if it was shorter and without so many pointless conversations.

What an amazing story!

This book had me hanging on every word from the beginning.
The narrator has a great voice and told the story so well, he was completely believable in this role.
I will be looking out for this author again especially if his books are read by Joshua Jackson!!!

I couldn't listen because Joshua Jackson is a terrible reader. I tried, but it is painfully dull and read like a child. disappointing as the story sounded interesting

Monotone dull

I can’t understand why people said Joshua Jackson was good! Maybe they’re confusing his dull flat reading with his great acting.
If you didn’t get scared to death by the story which was ok , you would be bored to death by the narration. He only has one tone - flat.

Riveting story & brilliant narration

Gripping story from the get-go. Recent narration by Joshua Jackson. Really hope he does more. Clever plot. Very well constructed and delivered. Got it free but would very happily have paid. Thank you!!!

Narration let down

On the whole this is a great story, well written and interesting. The book is let down by terrible narration, monotone and rushed. I slowed the speed down to listen, this helped significantly.

Narration wasn’t the best

I found it quite difficult to distinguish between the main characters thoughts and then speech. So I was wondering whether a sentence was said to another character or not. It was also difficult to differentiate between the male characters. All the voices are the same. Only the children had distinguishable voices.
The story was good though, kept freaking me out.
But the same voice used for all the characters as well as regular narration threw me a bit. I had to replay several scenes to figure out who was saying what
