Story
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Publisher's Summary
What would you do if you woke up in another world?
When leading archeologist Dr. Hank Murphy discovers an alien artifact on the Moon, corporate interests are quick to get involved. A discovery like this could change everything, but more importantly, someone stands to make a fortune. But Murphy just wants to understand what this thing is and how it works. After months of research, he finally manages to locate the power source.
The gate is soon activated...and Murphy is pulled through.
Moments later, he finds himself in a war-torn corner of the galaxy where strangers like him are called Orphans...and they are considered extremely dangerous.
Somehow altered by the experience, the archeologist now has enhanced strength, speed, and agility. He is more than human. He is an Orphan. And he must survive a deadly new reality unlike anything he can imagine. Worse still, Murphy is not the only so-called Orphan in this region of the galaxy. There are many others.
And not all of them are created equal.

meh, haphazard
Scott Moon and J. N. Chaney actually crafted a fairly unique and plausibly interesting plot. However, their execution came off unpolished and somewhat ridiculous. The MC, Murph, was a present day archeologist who was portaled into another galaxy that upgraded his DNA to increase his strength, agility and intelligence. However, while he was sought after due to his archeological prowess, the story never really demonstrated how this gave him any advantage. More disappointingly, his brazen cavalier attitude, while meant to project a jocular, self-confident air about him, mostly came off just the opposite and that the authors had this continually convince his antagonists otherwise was confounding.
Luke Daniels exceptional performance talents were wasted on this book.

To the Moon!
Scott Moon and JN Chaney are a great pair of writers, made all the better with Luke Daniels narrating. I loved this far flung exploration of the galaxy and a super unique concept. The idea of an Orphan was strange at first, but the more it went on the more sense it made. An Orphan is basically someone who goes through a portal device and ends up in this other region of the galaxy, so they're essentially "lost". They're also upgraded, so they have faster reflexes and enhanced strength and senses. This is such a weird and exciting concept that you just don't see very often, so I was intrigued right away. The story follows Murph, a scientist who is thrown into this device and sent across space, only to wind up on a wayward planet. He meets an alien giant that he befriends, along with several other allies, and together they have to fight an ominous threat while discovering more about these Oprhan Gates and the true purpose of what they all mean.
Very cool story and certainly unique. I recommend this if you're a stargate or Farscape fan like me. Can't wait for the next one.

WTF
Stop giving five star reviews to shitty books! Anyone can be published. I can't stand a book with a main character that is an idiot. The story goes in no direction and the main character never goes through with anything. His internal monologue would make you think this guy is tough and capable but he never acts on any of his thoughts. He just lets everyone have their way with him. the fact that there is no goal of the main character and thus no reason for him to do anything makes the story to frustrating to finish. I'm 6 hours in and I'm done.

MC is boring
The MC never really comes into his own, he’s like a third wheel in his own story the whole time, even though he’s written like he will eventually be useful. The way the authors keep referencing his changes like he’s a super human, but this guy doesn’t do anything, just keeps this weird superior tone with everybody he meets because he can ask basic questions that anybody would ask.
I guess I expected something like a cross between cultivation and space sci-fi but this is really just a guy getting dragged around by people playing his own little tough guy monologue in his head. Even worse is that he just lets everybody get off with changing the subject when it comes to plot details so there’s very minimal about the world revealed.
I’m curious if something will actually happen in book 2, but I’m not hopeful.

Really unique and fun story!
I haven’t listened to a story like this before. An archeologist pulled across the galaxy and transformed into a superhuman with enhanced strength and durability. This definitely isn’t your standard scifi but it feels familiar enough that I felt comfortable. Add to that Luke Daniels’ wonderful talent for bringing characters to life and you’ve got a riveting story here.
Recommended for people looking for an adventure and an easy listen.

promising start
This book starts with Dr. Murphy or "Murph" getting thrown into a portal on the moon and transported to another planet in the far reaches of space. He meets a giant alien guy named Zedas and they team up. I had absolutely no clue what to expect with this, except that it was a scifi story from JN chaney, who is one of my all time favorite authors, and involved some sort of story where the protagonist wakes up in another world. There are a lot of books out there like that, but almost none of them are like this. Murphy experiences a set of upgrades that make him stronger, faster, and smarter than he was before, and each time he goes through a gate, he gets stronger. That's a fun mechanic that I didn't see coming and it keeps the progression going.
Luke Daniels is a phenomenal talent, too, so having him here really helps make this a unique experience. He gives the characters some memorable voices and delivers his best performance since Renegade Star (if you haven't read that one, then I highly recommend it).
Overall, there's a lot to like here. My only complaint was that there were some parts where the story slowed down too much for my personal preferences, but that was rare and for the most part I didn't notice it enough to be a problem. If we're lucky, this is just the start of an ongoing epic story, because I can already see the potential here for lots of world building. The lore we get to see (sometimes only a glimpse) is done well enough that it kept me wanting more. Hopefully the sequels explore more about the gates and their creators.
