Publisher's Summary

Leah is changed. Months earlier, she left for a routine expedition, only this time her submarine sank to the sea floor. When she finally surfaces and returns home, her wife Miri knows that something is wrong. Barely eating and lost in her thoughts, Leah rotates between rooms in their apartment, running the taps morning and night. As Miri searches for answers, desperate to understand what happened below the water, she must face the possibility that the woman she loves is slipping from her grasp.

What just happened?

I was on the edge of my seat the entire book l and I am not sure how long it’ll take for me to recover… it was like a horror movie. But not. Strange. And I feel quite unsettled by it.

A must listen!

Not only is the narration beautifully done by Annabel and Robyn, both carrying the tone wonderfully throughout. The writing in the book was made to be heard, Armfield’s imagery is amazing. It wasn’t the thriller I was expecting but a slow terrifying burn. I would absolutely recommend this book!

Impeccable

This novel and its narration far exceeded any and all expectations I may have when cracking open any book / popping in my earbuds, and I am nearly impossible to please in ways which even I do not recognize. Complex, melodious, surreal, beautiful, hideous, heartbreaking, intense, and just so incredibly odd beyond measure. The joining of Annabel Baldwin and Robyn Holdaway’s voices with Julia Armfield’s novel is an elusively perfect marriage of written and spoken language. When I love an audiobook, I enjoy getting my hands on the book and toggling between listening and reading… it didn’t take me long to run out and purchase this book and I found myself in the most strange place of depriving myself from reading or listening for any long periods of time because I didn’t want to reach the end! I wanted it to last as long as possible! Alas, this is one book I will re-listen to and re-read numerous times.

Sad, Scary, and Deeply Moving

A powerful, slow-building drama that's wrapped in a Lovecraftian Horror story. Beautifully written story.

Incredibly written!

I adored this book start to finish, phenomenal story about grieving those lost. It's been a few weeks since I finished the audio book and I'm still thinking about it in earnest, about the little details and turns that the story took and ultimately, how very loving it was to its core.

Good story, 'meh' narration

A good read if you like unsettling lit fic

I just didn't particularly care for the narration style. The entire book is delivered in a serene monotone. Listen to the preview and know that's exactly how the entire book will sound. I was several chapters in before I even realized there were two different narrators.

Entertainingly Weird Fiction

4.5 stars for this thoroughly entertaining but equally weird story about a married lesbian couple struggling to stay together after an unnatural and tragic event that separated them for six months. It's primarily told from the perspective of the wife, Miri, after her partner, Leah returns from a work disaster where her submarine dropped to the bottom of the sea floor without power and did not resurface for six months. But you do get glimpses of what happened down there at the bottom of the sea during that six months and it becomes increasingly more and more creepy as told from Leah in an opposing timeline (oldest to newest.) And it is a very clever way to tell this story - one wife telling it in real time, working backwards and the other slowly giving you pieces of what happened six months ago and moving forward until the two timelines converge in a fairly unexpected result. I have discovered I LOVE WEIRD STORIES that work! This was just so well done and at it's heart it is a love story and a story about loss. I actually got tears in my eyes at the end! Tore through this one in one sitting. Literally stayed up until 2 am to finish it. This will be on my faves from 2022 and I truly recommend it to anyone who just wants to read something that you can't put down!

So promising but…

A little disappointing overall. I liked the performances & how the stories unfolded from each woman’s perspective. It was really interesting for the first 80% of the book. Unfortunately, the ending just fell apart & was unsatisfactory.
