Publisher's Summary

In 2017, world-class ultrarunner Hillary Allen was at the top of her sport - and it felt like she was running on top of the world as she competed in Norway's Tromsø Skyrace. Allen was nearly halfway through the 50-kilometer race when she fell 150 feet off an exposed ridge, fracturing her back and breaking multiple ribs, both feet, and both of her lower arms. Beginning with the dramatic story of her accident and rescue, Out and Back: A Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds recounts Allen's fight to return to the life she loves.

With vulnerability that reveals remarkable strength and introspection that yields wisdom, Allen shares the story of her recovery both physically and mentally, and hard-earned knowledge that the path forward is not always linear, that healing takes time, and that the process of rediscovery is ongoing as she learns what it takes to survive - and thrive. Out and Back is an inspiration to anyone who knows what it means to reclaim and rebuild your life, one day and one step at a time.

Grandmother loved it

I got this for my 95 year neighbor who loved it. She is Hillary’s grandmother also in Colorado. Now it’s my turn to listen to it.

Inspiring story for all runners

First of all I love it when an author narrates their own book. Hillary shares her story of tragedy and survival with such honesty. She paints a clear picture of what she was going through physically and mentally. As an Ultra Runner I can take a lot of the wisdom she shared here into the future.

A Runners Must Read

Listening to this story was not only inspiring but left me feeling empowered to overcome so many of life’s adversities. Hillary Allen is so transparent and vulnerable about the ups and downs she has had in running and life. I found it to be an added value to this audio book that she narrates her own story. The emotion of the events is better conveyed. She is a brilliant human being and after reading this I can’t help but say “why can’t I achieve this goal”. If you’ve ever had a set back or are striving to become the best version of yourself, then this book is for you.

Interesting...but...

Excellent narration. A story of hope and triumph over adversity. Might be of interest to long distance runners.

Ultra life

Could not turn this off. Great hearing how Hillary Allen worked through her identity as a runner —but found she has an ultra-life, not only an ultra-running life. Don't think this is only a sports book, or a biography of someone coming back from a near death injury. This is a compelling read (or listen) for anyone wanting to hear about a person's perseverance and finding why she does what she does.

Amazing comeback!

I had the privilege of meeting the author at the Chuckanut 50k in March 2022. She was so friendly and down to earth. I had heard her story several times before but not to this extent.
I can’t imagine the amount of courage, grit and pure determination needed to not only survive such an ordeal but to be able to make a comeback into the competitive world of ultra running.
Her honesty in this book shows how even though she is a top competitor in her sport, she is still human and has doubts and struggles like the rest of us.
I would highly recommend this to anyone even if you are not familiar with the running world. This story of courage is an inspiration for all!
Hillary- so glad I got to personally meet you and thanks for the signed book. Good luck with your future races!

Inspiring memoir, lacked focus

First two chapters were great, the rest were more of a collection of thoughts. Could have used an editor or ghost writer to give it more focus

A good listen

I enjoyed listening to Hilary. Always better when the author narrates.
Her story is really interesting . What I would have liked is more depth of her accident and her feelings. Yes she does describe them but it felt a little fleeting and as such I could not submerse myself as much as I would have liked.
A good audible though and definitely worth a listen.

Great story of recovery

I thought this was a fantastic story of recovery and passion for life. Hillary tells her story well and doesn't hide the hard parts. Some parts felt a bit longer than necessary but overall a great read.

resilience, strength & humilty

Hillary's story reminds us what we are capable of despite the tough cards we are dealt with throughout life. Never give up on something we love even when it feels really hard at times! Very well written, authentic and Hilary narrating the book makes it all the more personal. If you have a passion in life that has been put on pause due to illness or injury, you have to listen to this book to help you in your own journey.
