Publisher's Summary

From New York Times bestselling author Kristan Higgins comes a funny and surprising new novel about second chances—and why the lies we tell ourselves are the most dangerous.

Lillie Silva knew life as an empty nester would be hard after her only child left for college, but when her husband abruptly dumps her for another woman just as her son leaves, her world comes crashing down. Besides the fact that this announcement is a complete surprise (to say the least), what shocks Lillie most is that she isn't...heartbroken. She's furious.

Lillie has loved her life on Cape Cod, but as a mother, wife and nurse-midwife, she's used to caring for other people...not taking care of herself. Now, alone for the first time in her life, she finds herself going a little rogue. Is it over the top to crash her ex-husband's wedding, dressed like the angel of death? Sure! Should she release a skunk into his perfect new home? Probably not! But it beats staying home and moping.

She finds an unexpected ally in her glamorous sister, with whom she's had a tense relationship all these years. And an unexpected babysitter in of all people Ben Hallowell, the driver in a car accident that nearly killed Lillie 20 years ago. And then there's Ophelia, her ex-husband's oddly lost niece, who could really use a friend.

It's the end of Lillie's life as she knew it. But sometimes the perfect next chapter surprises you...out of the clear blue sky.

Wonderful!

Xe Sands is my favorite narrator. Add a heartwarming story with likable characters and it's a winner.
Set on Cape Cod, Lily, tha main character experiences a full, believable life. I never knew Cape Cod's hearty fishermen were Portuguese (her Dad).
I liked the contrasting characters of Melissa and Lily, who both marry Brad, a wimpy, least likable male character. There's a little something about normal
People from "white trash" to middle class to Uber rich. Strong women are central characters with men orbiting around them..some good, some odious. I think I liked this Higgins' book the best.

Weak female characters

I’ve never written a review but I feel I must with this book. It’s well written but I can’t stand either female in the story. I’m only a couple of chapters in but I can certainly see why the husband leaves. Lily doesn’t demand respect either from her husband or herself. No way would I have agreed to keep a life changing decision from my adult son. How selfish to wait till he’s 1800 hundred miles away and spring the news of a divorce on him. He would be by himself and feel helpless. The parents have completely shut him out and are treating him as a child. Lily didn’t have to bash the dad but I wouldn’t have covered for him either. He’s a selfish prick but then again Lily has fostered her husband’s narcissist tendencies, again having no respect for herself. I’d be hurt too but I’d be rightfully angry. She’s also passive aggressive and that’s childish.

As far as Missy goes, she’s a narcissist and a sociopath so her and Brad deserve each other.

I’m sticking this out but my gosh I hope Lily grows a pair 🤦‍♀️

Really bad book

I used to love this author. I found this book offensive. Did not like the characters of the story.. the innuendos attacking Catholics, white males, southern people. The voice over actress was horrible. Her voice, grating and sullen. What a terrible purchase! Hated it!

Ranked in my top 5

I don’t give reviews but I sure read them before making the difficult decision of my next read. I couldn’t resist sharing that this is so worth a credit. It’s emotional in all aspects and one I’ll recommend and will fondly remember always… Adding to my favorites knowing this is one I’ll come back to someday.

Very Enjoyable Listen!!!

This book really was a fun one! I laughed so many times and the characters are so lovable. No…the situations aren’t very realistic, but I’m not reading fiction for reality!! I’ll be looking for more books from Kristan Higgins!

Great read.

I have read many of Kristn Higgins books but this one is by far my favorite. As with all her books, the narration is superb .
The narrators kept me entertained with a fabulous story line filled with great characters.
I related so much to this audiobook.
Being an obstetrical nurse for 35 years and also having my marriage of 27yrs end in divorce I certainly could relate. Lily is my hero!

Engaging!

I loved the story. The authors descriptions of everything was spot on. The reader Xe Sands has the best voice - I’m excited to hear her next project.

Good Story

Not crazy about it in the beginning. Gets much better as you go. Some of the stuff Lilly does to Brad is so laugh out loud!! What would have made this a perfect listen would have been more narrators. Voices way too much alike. Melissa's voice was very irritating, but it suited her to a tee. The story was great!
