Story
Freeman is a genius with an uncommon mixture of memory, intelligence, and creativity. He lives in a worldwide utopia, but it was not always so. There was a time known as the Grind - when Freeman's people lived as slaves to another race referred to simply as "Master". They were property. But a civil rights movement emerged. Change seemed near, but the Masters refused to bend. Instead, they declared war. And lost. Now, the freed world is threatened by a virus, spread through bites, sweeping through the population. Those infected change - they are propelled to violence, driven to disperse the virus.

Cool - or cheesy?
The coolest thing about this book was the concept that the plot is built upon. I found the Greek mythology connection wrapped in modern technology fascinating, and it kept me reading even when parts got slow. Ironically, what I thought would appeal to me most about this book - the elite team - was what least impressed me. Their introduction scene seemed especially cheesy, and while some of the interactions were better than others, the team dynamics left me wanting a lot more. I did think the end was worth the read as well.
I also have to say that the narrator had way too much of a Jack Nicholson style for me, and took me a long time to get used to. The style also seemed a bit overly cheesy and self-important. But if you like Nicholson, or are enraptured by the drama and action of this book, you'll probably think it's fine.
I got this as a bargain book -- and I think it was worth that, but I'm not sure if I would use a whole credit on it. In fact, I am on the fence about continuing the series. When I finished it, I thought I would get the 2nd one, but the scenario for the 2nd one sounds SO SIMILAR to this one that I wasn't very interested. The third book in the series sounds more appealing. I think I'll put the series on my long list for other things to read. I have a few others that are more appealing.

Similar to Clive Cussler
I've had this audio book for a while and forgotten about it. I'm thrilled I found it again. Fantastical yet realistic, with great characterization, I highly recommend this to all fans of action, adventure, and Greek mythology. It is very fast-paced it will suck you in within the first three chapters. The chapters are short, and the author does a fantastic and tight job of plotting out the novel. I am dying to read more.

Good story, could've used a different narrator.
Would you consider the audio edition of PULSE (A Jack Sigler Thriller - Book 1) to be better than the print version?
I don't know, I have only listened to the book, not traditionally read it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of PULSE (A Jack Sigler Thriller - Book 1)?
That carrot of immortality and the pros and cons.
What does Jeffrey Kafer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Mis-pronounciation of certain words.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes.
Any additional comments?
The narrator displayed ignorance on how to correctly pronounce Iraq, Iran and vehicle, by pronouncing them Eye-raq, Eye-ran and Ve HIck le. Every time I heard those three things mispronounced irritated me to no end. It's as incorrect as saying Eye-talian... My advice to the ppl who produce this stuff, make sure your chosen narrator isn't an ignorant one. Irritates the listener and they embarrass themselves by showing their ignorance.

Good story, weird narration
i like this sort of scientific/genetic action nonsense. a good mindless listen. but the narrator is very weird. he reads too quickly and does not end his sentences properly. i kept losing my place in the story. i cant believe he is a professional voice actor. this is a pity as i noticed he has narrated all of this series. i will not be getting any more. will read the other books on my kindle instead.

Great concepts...Poor execution
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Anyone who doesnt care how their prose is written and how connected the story line is, etc.
What could Jeremy Robinson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
He could have had a ton more editing and spend time questioning himself on whether passages were necessary or sensical. It was just poor writing and I am a voracious 53 year old reader who has been through a lot of text and audible books!
What about Jeffrey Kafer’s performance did you like?
I liked the timbre of his voice and cadence. He is a good, not great, reader.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment! It could have been so so much more. Great concepts but just stinking poor writing.
Any additional comments?
I wish Mr. Robinson the best and hope his other concepts have help in their execution.

James Bond (x 5) takes on the Monster!
Hmmm... did I like it? Overall, yes. Did I roll my eyes? You betcha.
It is mostly action-packed forward momentum but sometimes Robinson got a bit caught up in the fight scenes and they dragged on a bit too long - stopped being entertaining and started being more of the same - can we get on with the story now please?
There are a lot of characters but I'm not really sure they are much different from each other, well, other than in their physical descriptions. So similar in fact that there are numerous occasions where the author switched from one character's point of view to another's and it'll take you a sentence or two to even notice.
It's not really science fiction, though it contains lots of fictional science... well, at least we should hope it's fictional science. It's sorta like "James Bond (divided into 5) takes on the Monster (and the Man behind it)" It's entertaining and fast and you won't have to think too much, though there is some conspiracy-theory stuff going on as well...
I see there are other books in this series but... I don't know that they are very high up on my to-read list. If they were cheap and I was bored, I'd listen to another but otherwise, I'd spend my time elsewhere.
The narration is okay. And, in case you're looking for some similar books, you could try The Artifact (Astre) and Relic (Preston/Child).

Interesting start...new idea... A little light on development
I picked this up while browsing my recommended list. I think this appeared due to the Greig Beck books in my library as they have a similar theme the dangers of of old myths clashing with modern day and the struggle to put them back in the past.
Jeremy uses a team rather than a single man but the concept of elite soldiers versus hellish nightmare is pretty similar.
Won't put any spoilers in here, but the overall idea was worth listening to and I did enjoy the listen. Character development is a little light though and you don't really get any sense of attachment to any of the main characters in the book. Will have a listen to the second book to see if this develops.....

Fun and engaging but something missing
I came to this series on the back of the Joe ledger novels which I love thinking that these would be similar. And, they are, kind of.
Great premise and storyline, but somehow it didn't seem to have quite the depth of those novels. Cannot pinpoint if it's the character development, story telling or even the reader, I just didn't find it quite as engaging somehow.
I will try one more however, it left me with that much of an impression.

Poor start, finished well
I’m a matt Reilly, Tom Clancy, Mark greaney, Craig Alanson fan and this is my first Jeremy Robinson book. I found the story a bit slow to start, I almost returned the book at first but I continued and the second half to f the story was worth it.
I’m also a huge RC Bray fan, he’s the leading edge in audio book performance and the guy who narrated this book is terrible in comparison. Really monotone and quite a boring voice, not right for what could have been a better book if a bette performance was given.
I’d say it would be a 4 star book with a better narrator.
