Joseph Colsco, Mark Caldwell, and Heather Chen. Cast away by aliens onto a planet inhabited by humans, transplanted there by a second alien race thousands of years in the past, and for reasons unknown. Each of the three found themselves left naked on beaches scattered across the planet Anyar. Each struggled to survive as strangers amidst humans with technology centuries behind Earth’s. Each lived through years of adjustments, trials, dangers, and new lives beyond anything they could have imagined - or feared.

Story
Humanity lurches into an uncertain future, dismissive of warning signs. Only the most naïve believe humanity will step back from the brink. Yet in a place that doesn’t exist, a riddle, a puzzle, hope, fear, danger, salvation - all come together. Zach Marjek has faced death in the far corners of the Earth and survived where others have failed. Now, he's thrust into an unimaginable situation where mercenaries, an Inuit wanderer, a murderous Yupik, a young mother, a video game designer, a retired general, a president, a Chinese marine, and mathematics prodigies must come together.

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
When former soldier Everett Cole signed on to help colony planets prepare for joining the Federation, his employers were more than a bit vague about their identity and his duties. Ditto when - 11 light-years from Earth - he met his partner, Edgar Millen, an enigmatic man with a fetish for the mythology and language of the American Wild West. It wasn’t until they reached the colony world of Astrild that the mission became clear (somewhat). Cole and Millen were hired guns, tasked with removing impediments to order and justice - the methodology left open-ended.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Publisher's Summary
For Mark Caldwell, an unsatisfying life was about to take a turn both terrifying and exhilarating as his fate took an unimaginable turn.
When Mark took his aisle seat aboard United flight 4382, he was ignorant of three facts. The fellow passenger in the window seat was named Joseph Colsco. Neither of them would ever set foot on Earth again. They both would be cast naked on an alien planet.
Adapt or die. Those were the choices. Determined to grasp the chance at a second life, Mark plunges into an adventure he couldn’t anticipate and leading to a future he can’t predict.

Great Continuation
This book is basically 2 books - there is the first part which has Mark in a similar situation to Jozeph try to establish himself on Anyar. Mark faces different challenges to Jozeph and is more ambitious. This first part can be further divided into 2 parts as well though the split is a spoiler.
Part 2 starts with the Mark chapter from "Tales of Anyar" it is almost a word for word insertion of that story in here "almost". (Chapter ttitle: " Unforseen danger")That story basically starts the plot for the namesake of the book " Passages" and the book finished with the conclusion of the arc which that story started.
Looking forward: This book has moved characters on the board together - the future books will hopefully deal with the interaction of these characters and dealing with the more external threat of the Narthani.
In terms of continuity with the rest of the series the first quarter takes place concurrently with the first 5, the 2nd quarter takes place concurently with book 4 and 5 likely. The 2nd half all takes place after the rest of the series except some of the stories from 5.
This book includes 1 page from Jozephs POV - this is not his story it's Marks story and an Anyar world tour (so there's lots of world building). This book like book 5/is NOT a direct continuation of the events from Book 4. It's more of a background story that will likely be important in the coming story arcs - don't go in expecting anything more as your not going to get it.
Likely Book 5 and 6 are the most skippable in terms of overall plot. I hope that the next book is not another background story from a character introduced in Tales of Anayar as that would get tiresome - it's time to move the plot forward.

Unbelievably Mind Numbing.
I can’t imagine what Olan was thinking when he sat down and wrote Passages? It tuned out to be the most tedious, uneventful, and uninspired novel I’ve read bar none. And, ironically, I genuinely enjoyed the first five books in this series. What happened, Olan!? Imo, your only chance for redemption is to nix Mark and his homely wife — and end your endless descriptions of their mind numbing day-to-day routines. Please, please bring Joseph‘s storyline back! Don’t bother wasting your time or a credit on this utter snooze fest.
Not even Jonathan Davis’s strong narration was able to breath life into this dud.

Olan has set the scene for what comes next in Anyar. At the conclusion to this book hints of future technological and political progress are forshadowed. Look forward to more adventure and military conflict. This book is a must read for lovers of Olan's DC Universe!

Overly descriptive and a little boring.
I did enjoy the book but I felt like it was pointless. The previous book summarized Mark perfectly and I was genuinely content with just having that establishing his character. If it picked up where it left off with Mark in the previous book it would have been amazing. This book gets a little mind numbing having to go through pretty much book 1's plot and story line again with a twist, showing what could of happened to Joseph if they didn't accept his ideas. This book is more of a romance than anything and I really wish he would ease up on the overly detailed sex scenes. I love the plot as is and don't need a smut book. I do love the character of mark but it doesn't get genuinely good until the last 2 hours of the book, the rest could have been easily condensed and skipped. I will shoot myself if he does this again for the female doctor introduced in the last book.

Great so far!
I saw a review that referred to this book as a basic redo of the original Anyar book 1. I couldn’t disagree more. Of course a person who finds themselves on a new planet with no possessions or friends and family are going to look to find ways to secure their future. When you’re from a more technologically advanced culture, it makes sense to take advantage of your unique knowledge. I love these books because they are fish out of water stories. The similarities and differences in Yosef and Mark’s experiences in the different cultures they landed in are what fascinates me.

Skip Book 5 and read this one instead
I've decided not to read Destiny's Crucible Book 5 - Tales of Anyar, because is was a collection of stories and not a complete singular story line. It seems that that book is incomplete ideas that Olan still had to fully develop, and by reading it, it spoiled this book for people who read Book 5.
And I'm glad I took the route of not reading book 5 because previous reviewers that gave the book highly negative reviews were mainly people who read the previous book and found one of the story lines being repeated in this book.
Personally I loved the book because I had no expectations of what it should be. The story line does move relatively slow at the beginning of the book - like others have described (although I didn't find it boring). But later picks up pace.
I liked the contrasting story lines between Joseph and Mark and how differently things can turn out because of differing circumstances. In the beginning it seemed that their stories would follow the same trajectory but then things takes a very different turn for Mark.
What I also liked that this book does not repeat details over and over again like he did in his previous books. He pretty much provided new information through the book without endless repetitions.
I feel Mark's story line gave me more information about all of the different nations of Anyar and to me it laid a good foundation for understanding the politics of the different cultures that might come into play in the future books.
And adding new characters in this book gives possible new dynamics to future story lines.
A last tip. I found it useful for all the books previous but also this one, to go to Olan's website and download the maps about Anyar's land masses and to follow along on the map as the story progresses. It made it easier for me to follow the descriptions of all of Mark's travels, instead of trying to keep all the details together in my mind of all the cities and land masses described.

WOW not what I thought. What a great book.
I was expecting Yosef. Instead we got Mark, who I think is a great character. How Olan created this world seems simple at first, aliens take people and transplants them onto an alien planet. Anyar has 17th Century technology, so in a way it's kind of like reading a historical fiction. The idea is basically simple, but adding a plane crash and survivors of said plane crash are all transplanted, separated and living their own life on this new planet. The story lines can be intertwined and almost infinite in direction, and that gets me super excited thinking about how many more books Olan can create!

Another awesome read.
I have read all the books in this series. The first 4, back to back three times. When part 5 came out. I read them again. Part 5 is good however, better understood and enjoyed if the 1st four are read beforehand.
Passages does not disappoint. The main character I eventually began to loved almost as much a Yozef. Mr Thorensen I am in awe of your stories and Mr Davis, you narrate brilliantly. So much so, I actually feel as if Ian there at times. I cannot wait for more Tales of Anyar. IMHO I can see atleast 3 more books to come. Even if you don't delve into the origin of Hal.
Very well done Sir

My heart is pounding. Thank you Mr Thorensen. No pressure but I hope tyou have material for few more books still. The characters and the fate of people of Anyar are so dear to me. I hope for great things for them.

It was definitely the right time to introduce Mark
After four and a bit books following Joseph, it was definitely the right time to introduce Mark to the universe. Unlike Joseph who can come across as a messiah, perfect like character, whose knowledge never gets questioned and never seems to fail in his enterprises, Mark is anything but. He is much more relatable and struggles to transfer his knowledge into the society he is placed in. He is more brutish and I feel this makes him MUCH more relatable to the audience. He can make mistakes and he pays the price for it. Its an interesting to & fro of success and failure.
When is the next book ready??

Good book, story to meet Colsco
One of the better books of the series. Not directly about Colsco, but of a fellow crash member and the story to Colsco. If you came this far in the series, you cant skip this one!

Great
Loved the book
Probably more on reflection at the time I kinda knew where it was leading too and was impatient but well paced and super informative. I’ve a feeling the detailed descriptions of the planets peoples this book facilitated will come into its own in future installments.
Narration was good as always with Mr Davis and I like a longer book so
5🔆 from me

Pretty much the same MC different place.
This is the sixth book of the Destiny's Crucible series. Here we get away from Joseph character and follow another survivor of the doomed flight. We also get some world building.
This follows the story of Mark, a navy engineer who got sent to the alien world of Anyar. The book is book feels like it is broken into segments and is focused around one man's exploits across several years. I can’t go into the passing without spoiling the book.
If you already read the first books you know about Thorensen's style, plot structure, and the world of Anyar. This book adds to the world of Anyar and gives us a different hero to cheer for. While Joseph and Mark start off very similar to one another. But since both men landed on different parts of Anyar and you see how something as simple as geography changes their personality.
Seriously. At the start, I thought we were doing a recap. That is how close Joseph and Mark are as main characters.

A different perspective
Different perspective from an earthling that was also affected by the plane crash. Absolutely love the story and the narrator's voice. That cliffhanger though... don't like that as much haha
Excited for the next book in this amazing series!
