Publisher's Summary
In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment. World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. A ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness" - the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now.
Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries, meditations, personal anecdotes, and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the listener already is - in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking - and shows how deep meditative presence is available now. Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace. Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices.
The deceptively simple practices of Peace Is Every Step encourage listeners to work for peace in the world as they continue to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the "mindless" into the mindful.

Great approach to mindfulness

What was one of the most memorable moments of Peace Is Every Step?
Overall I liked how the book was formatted. Small mini paragraphs that focused on mindfulness in various aspects of everyday life
Which scene was your favorite?
I really enjoyed the section where he talked about 'interbeing' and how everything is related to everything else
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
N/A
Any additional comments?
This is a book I can see myself going back to many times in the future. Full of great life advice, tidbits of wisdom, learned knowledge, and general advice on living a more mindful existence and being a better person. Great for people who are just becoming interested in mindfulness and meditation as well as for people more familiar with the topic. A must have addition to anyone's library

Like a sauna for your soul.
Makes perfect sense. Breathe, stop, think, detach, evaluate, then act. But the reminders of these principles helps to calm one. Maybe it's because I listened in the sauna that leaves me with such a peaceful message. ???
The youngest of Buddhist monks was standing in line to see Santa at the mall. His older brothers in saffron robes waiting. His wish list in his hand. After he was seated on Santa's knee he handed Santa a blank piece of paper. "This paper is blank, said Santa". "Yes Santa it is freedom from desire that I wish to speed me on my journey to enlightment". "So there is no THING I want for Christmas". When Santa stopped sobbing he released the little saint from his embrace and told him he would do all he could to make his wish come true. It is not fulfillment of desire that produces happiness but rather freedom from desire.

Honestly I was expecting more
What disappointed you about Peace Is Every Step?
This is not a bad book, if you never read anything about meditation it's a great way to start but I would definitely not rate it 5 stars as most people did. The book could have been shortened quite a bit (and it's already short). I think the narrator did a good job and it's not his fault if the book could have had a richer content. I think it's not very helpful when people rate everything 5 stars and in this case the average rating of the book in my opinion is exaggerated
Would you ever listen to anything by Thich Nhat Hanh again?
no
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
disappointment, but I had high expectations

Buddhist monks teachings
Thought I would join the bandwagon for mindfulness, calm and inner peace with this book.
Listening to this American man narrating, with his smarmy tone did not get me off to a good start.
I am sure Thich Nhat Hanh has many meaningful and insightful things to say about our every day lives and how we can live in a better way, but for me there were a few anomalies.
When he spoke about bells ringing, and finding that time to calm, focus our breathing and reach in to ground ourselves, that I can grasp.
However when he said "waiti for the third ring before answering.the phone" and then his comment that it must be hard for telephone operators to find calm and mindfulness, I stated switching off to the fact he was not looking at our modern lives holistically
Thich Nhat Hanh is a Buddhist monk, who lives and breathes his work and he is not the everyday “ normal “ person.
So personally for me I found it a bit difficult to grasp all his theoretical ideology in our modern day world, There is an unfortunate theory practice gap displayed by Thich Nhat Hanh of which his understanding and interpretion has a cognitive bias
A phrase comes to mind regarding this book…..You need to walk in someone else’s shoes before you judge them,.... better still …. You need to take your own shoes off before you walk in someone else’s and make any judgements.
Thich Nhat Hanh thoughts and ways are very beautiful and genuine, However we must remind ourselvesr he has been a practising Buddhist all his life and now as a monk, he is in the upper echelons of Buddhism
What galls me is the people who will read/listen to this book and then preach to everyone that they in touch with their Yin and Yang, practice mindfulness and are at peace with themselves and life. Then the moment there is a bit of difficulty in life they become the shouty stressy ones....... The Dunning Kruger curve comes to mind for these individuals, as well as the similarity of those people who read a few medical bits on the internet and suddenly become google doctor
Anyway with that said, I am sure I will be slated for this review.
So enjoy a few calm hours listening to this, before you get on with your every day life again.

Mindfulness
I came into this book very skeptical that it would help my anxiety. I saw this as “hippy nonsense” for tree huggers. How I was wrong…
I listened to this book driving to work, when my anxiety hit me the worst. For that whole week I felt happy, I felt calm, I felt aware of my anxiety and welcomed it rather that fight it.
I would say I am going to go and walks, hug trees and write poems of flowers. But I will respect my thoughts and be mindful of others. This is a highly rated book and it has helped me more than anything I have ever tried. Absolute respect.
As I breathe out I smile.

Life Changing
The practical insight, guidance, understanding and practices shared in this book have drawn together and made sense of decades of learning, work and struggles. It provides the first real grounded way of bridging what is at root of my repeat failures to sustainable change and a fresh and practical way seeing and approaching creating and sustaining healthy relationship, and recognising state someone is relating from and my own... making it clearer on what is needed. It has made it way clearer on were homemade is and how to anchor there and know what is truely helpful and what is leading me astray. This books content is enriching in both broad and deep ways relevant to all areas of living a wonderful, awesome, fulfilling life. The author has shown were one’s power is accessible and flows in healthy ways and how to anchor in ones wellbeing power and flow.... many heartfelt thanks to her shared insight and practices. Recommend reading for all who want to end living life from distressed and shut down states and embrace their fullest potential in kinder gentler more respectful ways... to live their best life moment to moment.

So inspiring
Thich Nhah Hanh is so inspiring, and how words are poetic, profound and loving. His messages and advice on how to cultivate peace within ourselves, with our family and community, and with all beings around the world is so important to our modern world. I highly recommend this book to everyone, particularly to those who want to make peace in the world, including activists, teachers, parents, Buddhists and non-Buddhists.
