Kacey is the new girl in Broken Falls. When she moved in with her father, she stepped into a brand-new life. A life with a stepbrother, a stepmother, and, strangest of all, an adoring younger half sister. Kacey's new life is eerily charming compared with the wild highs and lows of the old one she lived with her volatile mother. And everyone is so nice in Broken Falls - she's even been welcomed into a tight new circle of friends. Bailey and Jade invite her to do everything with them.

Story
There are no more cheerleaders in the town of Sunnybrook. First there was the car accident - two girls dead after hitting a tree on a rainy night. Not long after, the murders happened. Those two girls were killed by the man next door. The police shot him, so no one will ever know his reasons. Monica's sister was the last cheerleader to die. After her suicide, Sunnybrook High disbanded the cheer squad. No one wanted to be reminded of the girls they'd lost.

You heard the story on the news. A girl and a boy went into the woods. The girl carried a picnic basket. The boy wore bright yellow running shoes. The girl found her way out, but the boy never did.... Everyone thinks they know what happened. Some say Tabby pushed him off that cliff - she didn't even like hiking. She was jealous. She had more than her share of demons. Others think he fell accidentally - she loved Mark. She would never hurt him...even if he hurt her.

Publisher's Summary
A sharp psychological thriller that's just right for fans of Pretty Little Liars - this story will seduce, mislead, and, finally, betray you.
Kay Donovan has skeletons in her closet, but who doesn't? The past is the past, and now Kay's a star soccer player whose group of gorgeous, pedigreed friends run their private school with effortless popularity and acerbic wit. But when a girl's body is found in the lake, Kay's carefully constructed life begins to topple. The dead girl has left a memento, a computer-coded scavenger hunt, which, as it unravels, begins to implicate each of Kay's friends, until Kay herself is in the crosshairs of the murder investigation. At this school, no one is quite what they seem...even Kay.
Debut author Dana Mele has written a taut, sophisticated suspense novel that listeners will tear through and not stop talking about.
Critic Reviews
“This juicy prep-school thriller has queen bees, super-cliques, and hints of PLL and Gossip Girl. But if you think you’ve got every plot turn figured out, think again: the drama is just getting started.” (Seventeen Magazine)
“[A] whirlwind, fast-paced YA mystery.... Not only will Mele’s gorgeous, melodic writing have you entranced, but the layered mystery of it all will have you scrambling to turn the pages to see who-dun-it.” (Buzzfeed)
"Steeped in scandal and profound tragedy, this is a dark and thrilling look at female friendships, the pressures of scholastic success, and mental health.... A classic and frightening tale of betrayal and mental illness told in a fresh and contemporary way, this book is difficult to set down for even a moment. It is an intricately designed, beautifully written, and extraordinarily chilling story." (School Library Journal)

Mean Girls meet 13 Reasons
Kay is high on the social influence scale at her prestigious girls academy. That is until she becomes the top suspect for the murder of a fellow classmate. Desperate to avoid a shady past, thing just keep getting worse for me as she struggles to unearth the real killer.
Interesting story full of unique characters and just enough suspense to keep the reader going. At times, revelations about Kay appear forced and sloppy in terms of plotting. But such moments are forgivable.

Couldn't stop listening
What did you love best about People Like Us?
It didn't end how I assumed it would, which shocked me the most, I think. With most YA "who-dun-it's" you can figure it out before the end. Not so for this one for me, which I really appreciated.
What other book might you compare People Like Us to and why?
"One of Us Is Lying" by Karen M. McManus is very similar, in good ways! Definitely pick that one up, too, if you liked this one.
Have you listened to any of Erin Spencer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
(slight spoiler? maybe?) The fact that everyone willingly turned against Kay almost immediately reminded me of some of my own high school experiences. In high school, everyone loves an easy target to hate. And anyone can become that target, even if they weren't the worst bully, and it can happen instantly. Ten years ago, I had something similar happen (without murder, of course) when I was 17 and in high school, so it hit me a little hard and made me super relieved to be out of high school.
Any additional comments?
It's an engaging listen. It's definitely one that makes you not want to put it down and to keep listening. I finished it in one sitting, partly due to fibromyalgia pain but mostly because I had to know how it ended! It totally surprised me by the ending, which was nice.

I'm not usually a YA reader, but I listened to this during a business trip recently and looked forward to turning it back on every time I had to shut it off. I thought I could predict the end, and I sort of did, but then it took a real unexpected turn that I never saw coming.

I wouldn’t recommend.
So here’s the thing, the book wasn’t bad it was just more so boring. Through out the book the main character, Kay, is convinced that it is one person and then it’s not, of course. The book also doesn’t give you all the information of what happened the night of the murder until the end of the book, sometimes I like that but the only reason the author did it was so that you couldn’t guess who the murder was. I also didn’t like the main character I know that in some books you are supposed to hate them but I don’t think that was the case for this one. Kay let herself get manipulated easily and was just overall stupid.
Now again I don’t hate this book, but because of the reasons above I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. That said if you haven’t read a lot of murder books this one would be okay to you. In my opinion the reviews I read where very misleading. (P.S. there’s nothing but kissing, I saw a review which said otherwise)

Nicely gripping story
Really well performed and a strong story that keeps you listening. It’s hard to follow the chronology on occasion and I had to rewind parts to figure out when things had happened. The motivation for Kay to do what she does feels a bit weak and I found it hard to believe that almost every girl at the school was gay or bi. Maybe I just went to the wrong school! Definitely worth a listen/read.

Good
I wasn’t sure about this book at first because it sounded similar to lots of other books like this but the story was good. It was a good listen however the plot line was very easy to guess and I found myself bored at the end because I already new how it was going to play out.

🌟🌟🌟🌟
A slow burning mystery and thriller that managed to captivate me till the end. So many twists and turns and nuances that held my interest as the story developed. None of the characters are particularly likeable, they are selfish and awful people, but somehow still sympathetic!
So many motives and suspects that I really could not pin down my own prediction, as I kept thinking, but what if?
The story moved slowly at times, but I just had to keep listening to get the answers! It wasn’t the most exciting reveal ever. The moment it all clicked wasn’t really a huge surprise at all. What was the most interesting was the final twist at the end, the reason she went along with it all in the first place! Brutal!
🎧 The narration just fit the character of Kay completely. The voice was cold, unsympathetic, and detached almost. It fit her perfectly. Never letting the drama of it all take over!
